In my campaign I need a station at Lagrange 3 (opposite side of the Sun). I've looked through the core book and Sunward and see no canon reference to anything there. I can make my own of course and have an idea of what I want, but wanted to make sure there's not a giant killsat factory or anything there first since I'm trying to stay consistent to the universe so my players can learn it.

Re: Anything at Earth-Sun L3 Point?
The books seem to suggest that Lagrange 3 does indeed/did indeed have a far few Stations there, however it does not go into details. I think it is fairly safe to say that you can feel free to stick whatever you want down on Lagrange 3.

Re: Anything at Earth-Sun L3 Point?
Is there any reason to put anything there except that one can always stay out of sight from Earth?

Isn't Elysian Fields (p. 137, Sunward) at Earth-Sun L3?
Not that you can't put another habitat there too.

Re: Anything at Earth-Sun L3 Point?
Here (pdf) is a paper calculating the properties of the points. It is interesting to note that L3 is more stable than L1 and L2. At L1 and L2 habitats tend to wander off after a few months unless slight course corrections are made, while L3 is stable over many decades.
The "size" of the Lagrange points is pretty ill defined, but L4 and L5 are quite large compared to L1, L2 and L3. Still, L3 is going to be huge compared to whatever habitat you would like to build. My impression is that a habitat doing mild station keeping has probably at least a tenth of an AU of space to play in (the field gradients are mild along the Earth orbit near L3). The risk of hitting or even annoying the Elysian Fields is pretty low.

hi hi
Important point of fact, while it doesn't preclude putting something at the Earth-Sun L3, due to the elliptical nature of the Earth's orbit, L3 is visible from the Earth for most of the year.

Re: Anything at Earth-Sun L3 Point?
Thanks for the info. I wanted to put a giant Oneill cylinder called "Heartland" full of rich luddites who want to build a space station that essentially looks like Iowa, and have the sun be just the same size as they remember it (though not have to deal with the Luna people, Fresh Kills, etc) so they can farm, go to church, and have fish-frys.

Heck, there's a perverse sense of humor in having that habitat at the same Lagrange point as the habitat full of people working on peacefully killing themselves.

Re: Anything at Earth-Sun L3 Point?
OH, I had misread and thought Eleysian Fields was at Earth-Luna L3. Actually since it is an O'neill cylinder I can say that bioconservatives who changed their mind or whatever took it over after the main guy killed himself and just decided to live there (maybe they won't extend their life at all). Bizarre that I had an idea very similar to the one in Sunward.
