Sunward: First Impressions and Reviews
With Sunward now officially being in the wild, and if my time on most other websites is anything to go by, we are soon going to see a flood of first impressions and reviews going up. So in an attempt to keep the forums reasonably clean how about we keep it all nice and snug in one place? In here that is. I will be posting my first impressions after I have had a bit of time to have a brief look through the book.

Re: Sunward: First Impressions and Reviews
As a very minor aside it's nice to finally see pics of neo-hominids, flexbots, reaper, basic case morphs, and worker pods. It's also cool to see so many of the new morphs actually depicted (and clearly labelled!). Unfortunately, a couple of the oddest-sounding morphs were not depicted: the Q-Morph (squat, four-legged crab-like morphs crafted from quartz crystal and alloys with two pairs of arms: an upper pair designed for strength and a lower pair for precision and control) and Sundiver (a synthmorph described as being something like a sleek 6m-long ramjet with articulated arms). Looks to be a very nice supplement though, and that's the only nitpick that arose from a very, very brief scan. Colin

Page 25 looks suspiciously like they might be Q-Morphs. They look four legged, squat, kinda crab like and they appear to have two pairs of arms.

Hmm, I think you may be right. I missed those, but I definitely wish they were clearer. Any sign of sleek ramjets with arms? Wondering if I missed it. Colin

Is it just my copy, or does page 43 end in the middle of a sentence?

It just ends with, "These", so yep, some text got messed up in some way.

Re: Sunward: First Impressions and Reviews
Whoops. One last CS4 -> CS5 bug that I didn't catch in the franticness yesterday. The last paragraph, fully, is: Within the past three years, genehackers have produced several more complex life-forms that are similarly adapted for life in the Venusian clouds. Because oxygen levels are still extremely low and are unlikely to rise significantly for several decades, all of these creatures are photosynthetic. The most abundant are jelly-floats, flimsy balloon-like jellyfish creatures that consist of oxygen gas bags up to a meter across, below which hang slender tendrils they use to feed on the larger forms of air plankton. Jelly-floats are just now being seeded within air plankton populations, so it is too early gauge their success. Even larger and more active are the delicate flying octopi, which obtain their lift from gas bags up to 3 meters across and use jets of compressed Venusian air to propel themselves at speeds of up to 20 kph. These creatures are designed to feed on the jelly-floats and, when released, will be the top predators of the Venusian ecosystem. Genehackers have also created other more active creatures, including muscular fliers like the predatory cloud mantas. These active life-forms require an oxygen atmosphere, however, and so can only be found in the terraforming menagerie on Aphrodite Prime.

First. Love the new Morphs, kind of feel sad I won't be playing one, since I just started a new game. Having looked through it, with divided attention, except for Mars. I love the Noctis-Qianjiao entry, mostly because it contains dutch words. I'm dutch-speaking, not Dutch. However there are some things I found odd. The names Enckl and Vonderhaar, sound more german than dutch. A more correct use would have been eNkel (or Eykel :) ) and Vandenhaar. the more 'n sounds, the better, that and e's. Also Nieuwedam would only be Nieuwedam if it was introduced with a "de", making the De Nieuwedam or it would be Nieuwdam, or Nieuwendam. I like the Biobrug, but what's so funny about it, I don't get it. And Kledingsbrug, should have been the Naaiersbrug. Overall it's OK. And what aspect of dutch does the writer find cute. The holland dutch or the shades-of-E's dutch. Or another aspect of dutch entirely. Because dutch is manly german. :)

hehe I noticed that too even searched the credit to see if I found any Bart De Wever (pro-flemmish politician in Belgium) in it More seriously, I love that book! haven't read it thoroughfuly yet, but it was really worth the wait. am I the only one who found the Mobile Scientist chararcter with the Neo-Hominid Morph to resemble Helena Bonham Carter's character in Burton's Planet of the Apes?

Ugh. Research fail. My apologies to the Dutch speakers. (And sorry, I don't remember what I was using as a reference... The text of the Mars chapter had been in the can for a long time in writer-years). Moxie will stand by her statement that Dutch sounds really cute, though. Especially when they say, "Boie-boie." :)

No apologies needed, it's not as if it's the easiest language around. But foreign-dominion tends to provide one with a sense of individualism. Add in the mix the countless dialects and you've got languages within languages. And the fact that lingual-division has reached the upper echelons of our dear government. (Fears the GeStaPo ( Gentse Stads Politie)) :) My dialect gets subtitled on National Television, and I forgot what I was going to type. I don't know what your trying to imitate but I am unable to pronounce a -g, don't pronounce a -k sound and overuse the -e (read somewhat as the -a from cat, or the -a of about when it's ...-en. ). It's a bit like the guy in HotFuzz with the Sea-Mine. Now to make this post a bit about the topic. I've read it some more and loved it some more.

Re: Sunward: First Impressions and Reviews
I picked up a copy of Sunward yesterday and I've got to say, I really like it. I haven't had a chance to go through it thoroughly, but at first glance it's got some interesting new Morphs, my favourite being the Steel Morph, some excellent artwork and a nice tasty helping of setting info. Looking forward to seeing what the next book is like.

Re: Sunward: First Impressions and Reviews
I notice that the entry for the snythmorph activist, the second yto last character example is really screwed up. Some of the text was clearly meant to be for an octomorph, as in biomods, chameleon skinn, 8 limbs, beak attack, ink attack. Major text error there, I'm sure it'll be fixed soon, I just bought it today and noticed that. BTW, glad to get it, and was happy as hell to see that EP has survived, apparently, the catalyst labs crisis. Good job, guys at PHS, glad you trooped thru. Edit: WEIRD ALERT!: I downed sunward from it's FTP site, then later bought a copy from drivethrurpg because I have a friend with a secure system one can safely send CC#s thru as he has a business account. The one I bought from drivehtru has the goof on page 43, but the one from the free ftp has the page in it's correct form. Weeeirrrd.

The version on DriveThru is actually the most up-to-date, despite the one pagination error that snuck in. Copies that would have gone out to proofreaders/etc used a previous version.

Well, be sure to fix the error giving the synthmorph activist some stats like an octomorph soon. BTW, lest anyone thinks otherwise I'm going to make it clear I'm giving sunward a pass on the glitches. Between having catalyst fail and having to find a new publisher pronto I can excuse the guys at PHS for a few easily corrected boo boos. I'm sure they had a lot on their minds and a lot to worry about, so the easily correctable with updated pdf mistakes are forgiven.

Agreed, there are very few actual mistakes in this one. A few things that probably should of been picked up (The Octomorph thing being one of them), but the Errata for Sunward looks to be very small. As far as I know the entirety of what we have found so far has fit into about 10 forum posts. Very tidy book. The only other "big" mistake was caused by Adam needing to fiddle about with CS4-CS5 conversion or some layout thing I didnt really listen too, in the hours before they threw the book out into the wild. Most of the errata is either grammar mistakes or the occasional spelling mistake.

Thanks. Regarding the Martian Ranger, one of the funny things about dealing with illustrators is how when you ask them to put more clothes on a female character or make her boobs smaller, they do exactly the opposite. At least my demand for a smoking monkey was met. :)

You'd think that -- I did -- but you'd be wrong. Baboons in Johannesburg, South Africa, will actually pick up discarded, still-lit cigarettes and smoke them. Animals aren't stupid enough to smoke on their own, but expose them to human bad habits and you're off to the races. Monkey see, monkey do...

@ tangent - Quad squirrels are vicious critters, at least in my old college. With no fear of humans they'd steal food right from the hands of freshmen, run off with loose papers for nesting and have ugly territory fights on couples enjoying public displays of affection on the lawn. Of course now I see them as part of a large swarm-morph run on behalf of campus security...

Re: Sunward: First Impressions and Reviews
The squirrels on my campus knew better. But, then again, we had river hawks. Now, that was an interesting reaction to watch from the freshmen who'd lure the squirrels out with pieces of muffin and bagel. They'd giggle, and smile, and feed them some more. And slowly, the squirrel would stop hiding, and sit there, and be fed from about five feet away, when... SCREEEEE! And the freshmen would freak out. Good times. On topic, I'm still working my way through Sunward, but it is looking like a very nice product. I like the ribbon bookmark it came with (bought mine at GenCon, because it came with a discount for the cute biting stuffed octopus).

There's an Eclipse Phase FTP site? When?! Where?!! As for Sunward, I have been loving it. Granted, the only real parts I've actually used to any degree in my games have been the section on Earth and the new mechanics (no one cared for the neotenic before, but it's a hit now that you can get wings implanted onto them). Unfortunately, I was saddened to find out it had no information on the asteroid belt, but the interesting info on Sol and Earth were well worth the tradeoff.

I LUV fanservice and the Martian Ranger made my day! As far as the book itself it really rocks. I wasn't expecting a hardcover so it was a very nice surprise. I'm still making my way through the various chapters, reading whatever catches my eye, but it all seems very together and professional. I just might start up a Eclipse Phase play-by-post game on Myth-weavers now that I have a solid setting book to fall back on.

Yeah, but having a booth babe dressed as the Martian Ranger would probably get a lot of attention next Gen Con, keep that in mind! (extra credit if you can find a smoking police baboon)
AdamJury AdamJury's picture
Re: Sunward: First Impressions and Reviews
We have interest in "booth babes." If one of our volunteers/booth staff wants to dress in character, that's awesome; but hiring someone just to dress up and try to attract attention is not something we would do, and as a customer, I know it's not something I respond positively to. I've worked booths right opposite a booth that had booth babes, and I felt so bad for them: they were bored, they had no valuable information to share with people; they gave the people who talked to them and took photos nothing but the thrill of having their photo being taken with someone who was paid to dress up and be nice. That's not our style at all. If we're going to pay/compensate people to help us at conventions, we're going to deal with people who love the game and can explain it, demo it, and evangelize it.
Sunchaser Sunchaser's picture
Re: Sunward: First Impressions and Reviews
Thats the way to do it. Hired 'guns' always felt like the company was trying too hard to get my attention which left me feeling uncomfortable. Sure...I liked the girls but they were a distraction from the product itself. People who love the game dressing up? Yep!

Re: Sunward: First Impressions and Reviews
I have to admit that it is true, "booth babes" are a bit distracting (as in taking focus away from the product) and yeah they look bored 90% of the time wondering what the hell they are doing there... Not the best sales pitch.

Seriously? I was unable to make it to GenCon this year. I had a half-baked plan to dress as a pleasure pod (complete with silicone surgical scars) and ask if I could hang out at your booth for a while, but thought that the EP team might be a little squicked by it.
