Ionic Mobility
After watching a certain movie yesterday i thought to myself "Okay, how capable is the EP Tech to replicate such a piece of equipment?". After reading through the mobility systems in the corebook, i saw Ionic Mobility. Having only a basic understanding of the physics involved, i ask myself some things: Isn't it dangerous to create plasma all around myself? And how does this spinning look like? Does a synthmorph with this system screw around when he flies? And lastly, i asked Wikipedia about Ion Drives and they talk about the use of Ion Drives in Spacecraft, yet the EP Corebook says that Ionic Mobility doesn't work in vacuum. Is there a difference between Ion Drives and Ionic Mobility? If not, who is right?

This is what Ionic Mobility replicates in EP. It essentially creates an ionic wind from the air surrounding it to create lifting force. The systems in EP are far more advanced, and obviously capable of producing far more propulsion. However, there is little proof that this technology works in vacuum... and even if it did, you would need to provide throwable mass. Since ion mobility systems are likely just built to utilize the air around them, that would be the obvious reason they don't work in vacuum.

From what ive read so far a Ion Drive != Ionic Thruster. They just sound similar.. Ones a EHD device using the Biefeld–Brown effect (Electrohydrodynamic thingy according to wikipedia) to produce thrust in air and the other is using ions to create thrust.

Re: Ionic Mobility
Ion Mobility (aka Iononcraft) and Ion Drive (aka Ion Thruster) are different. Ion Mobility creates ions from the atmospheric gases and uses the interaction of those ionized particles with the non ionized atmosphere. It doesn't work in a vacuum for obvious reasons. Ion Drives use a store of particles, which are then accelerated out of the rocket to create thrust. Weak thrust, which would be useless in a strong gravity well.

Ion thrusters work in space, but ionocraft do not. The difference is that ionocraft do not carry ejectable mass... they use the air around them for propulsion, like a propeller or turbine. Without air, there is nothing to ionize.

Will go back to reading all the words in a thread before posting I reply.
