Does Mental Disorder (Addiction) require an Ego/Morph Addiction EP 1e
This question is for Eclipse Phase 1st Edition... I am looking at the relationship between Mental Disorder (Addiction) (EP p. 211), and at the Negative Ego/Morph Trait Addiction (EP p. 148). I know you can have an Ego/Morph Addiction, without a Mental Disorder (Addiction). My question is, can you have a Mental Disorder (Addiction) without a corresponding Negative Ego/Morph Trait Addiction? My guess is No. The Mental Disorder needs a target addiction, and if you are not addicted to anything, you cannot have an addiction-based Mental Disorder, whether you never had an ego or morph addiction, or had one but "cleaned up" and "kicked the habit" (EP p. 318).

I would argue you can have a mental Disorder (addiction), ie any mental illness that has a compulsion component to it. Your addiction is giving into a impulse, be it checking the locks exactly 3 time or multiples of 3, or maybe its manifest as a bad habit (gambling or sex whenever possible.), only requirement would be that the root cause was from mental issue. Basically anything that is driven by a purely physiological "need" rather than a biological.

Don't you mean a purely psychological "need" rather than a biological?

Addiction trait vs Addiction mental disorder
My premise is that the Addiction trait is a complete path, without the prerequisite of a mental disorder. When the trait presents with the use of a drug, the drug usage carries the risk of addiction in well defined game terms, with stacking consequences as the addiction levels rise in severity, and has the escape clause of getting clean and kicking the habit. The Addiction trait does not require the mental disorder. The Addiction mental disorder, in particular, appears to require an existing addiction, when speaking of a drug. It appears to be an amplification of the behavior associated with a particular drug addiction, when Mental Disorder (Addiction - [drug]) is chosen. Choosing Mental Disorder (Addiction - [drug]) without a drug addiction trait is illogical to me. I do see where a mental disorder could provide a pathway to drug use. Something like Mental Disorder (Depression) could lead to Mental Trait (Addiction - drug), which, after 4 traumas, could lead to Mental Disorder (Addiction - [drug]), logically. But, it just doesn't feel right (to me) to choose a drag addiction mental disorder when there is no underlying drug addiction trait.

I think addictions are so
I think addictions are so complex there is no right or wrong here. Its up to the player and the GM on how they will work things out.
