Why the TITANs uploaded ego
Hello everyone. One thing about the great setting of Eclipse Phase that make me thinking is why the TITANs uploaded millions of peoples during the Fall. My theory is that they needed it to finish their singularity by acessing a potentiel fourth psi level where they need a vast number of ego to distrube the strain. Or something similar. But my problem is if they needed other egos why not use forks of themselves (like the Fetches). What are yours theorys ?

For me .... the ETI are the Lovecraftian Mi Go. They upload a massive number of ego to have enough psychic Power to open the gates for the ancient gods

It may be so but what trouble
It may be so but what trouble me is that the TITANs took the egos of other people when they could use forks of themselves. The only thing I can think off is that all the forks and backups of someone share the same 'soul' but that enter in metaphysics, something that don't fit in EP.

Forks are only a shadow of
Forks are only a shadow of the original... so they can be considered less efficient to supply cumulative energy. But we can also consider that the mass of Egos necessary to provide sufficient energy is gigantic.... This explains why the Mi Go wait for a civilization to develop the technologies to multiply egos (by demography and transhumanism) before striking. This may also explain the alerts given by aliens who have come into contact with humans. It may also explain the existence of Pandora's Gates. They must allow humanity to multiply again before the harvest.

Why they did it?
Why they did it? Of course... to save us from exurgent virus. Duh. And we live in in the simulation while the 95% of the people that did not make it are presumed dead. It's obvious you just have to see the signs...

Maybe the keyword you should use is unique egos. Otherwise, the ETI could just use a billion forks of a single ego.

Ego Collection
Been thinking a lot about nuts and bolts of some of unanswered questions of the setting. When it comes to ego collection. I think the initial assault was the hammer. A brutal breakdown of of a perceived threat. Followed by a closer examination of the vanquished foe. Why collect egos. A dataset for further in depth study perhaps? The gates were opened after A required amount of damage was done. All the “samples” Titans, egos, etc are taken for further study. What will the conclusion be?

The massive accumulation of
The massive accumulation of different egos has several "obvious" explanations. First and foremost, the same reasons for the black market derived from egonapping. Among those, experiences, private knowledge, and valuable skillsets are the most direct. Secondly, a Zoo. Be it a working, living zoo, or a "frozen" one. The more options, the better to get the most complete picture. Thirdly, elimination of enemy resources. Finally, study. While humanity is relatively easy to study as a group (the bigger, the easier, considering cultures for differences), isolated individuals could be impossible to predict. Now on the less evident explanations, that directly enter into the assumptions territory... A prize for their masters. If there are. Resources to use for some project. About this, we know that Iapetus has a workforce of infected transhumans used as workers. Economy. I find possible that the TITANs would use egos as currency... with alpha forks less valuable than the original ego, and beta forks even less. I'm sure there are more options, without going to the "psi" route.

My theory is that any reason
My theory is that any reason we find is probably incomplete, just as ants can't grok what we are up to. But maybe because it is more efficient to mass harvest minds because you terrorize the enemy, reduce his resources, AND get a very wide sample of disparate unique minds, instead of just psychosurgically reiterating the variations on one fork in hyperfast simulspace. But any guess or supposition detracts from the cosmic horror.
Exhuman, and Humanitarian.

Not really. This is a classical Hitchcock's set: you know there is a monster, but the details are left for each one to think about. The funny think is the Fall had a really defined theme: horror, death and loss. It is fairly difficult to find any positivity for humanity in the TITANs actions, so any ideas will be horror-coloured, and the more people dropping their fears, the more nightmarish the picture becomes. And we can be sure that, in-game, the EYE has several archives and forum threads about why those egos were forcefully taken, and what are they being used for, and that the "pretty, optimistics" ideas are less than 1% of the total of evergrowing horror. Technology marches on, after all, and that opens more terrorific ideas the more we know...

Ego fun
The players come across a Titan cache containing a list of gate address's. Each of these address’s leads to a different world filled with humans living in strange settings. Where time and history are warped. 1950’s America but the nazis won world war 2 and dinosaurs still exist. All of these worlds inhabitants are missing egos that have been heavily modified. Twilight Zone ala EP.
