Help! I'm from the past!
From: {mesh ID does not exist} Am I using this right? If you are reading this, I need some help adjusting to this future. I'm from the year 2012. After my wife divorced me, I considered committing suicide, but I wanted to see the future. So I looked around and found out I could get frozen. I gave them all my money since I figured they wouldn't use Canadian Dollars in the future (I was right) and I was frozen. Then me and the others were awaken IN SPACE by some scientists studying the sun or something. Most of them were "farcasted" to Saturn to protect us from some planetary group of Arabian Frechmen. So that's a thing. The problem is, I don't think my soul will go with me. Unlike the rest of "transhumanity" (whatever that means) I do believe in God and souls. They tried explaining to me about quantum physics and "personal identity" but I'm talking about religion here. One of them said that the soul is a supernatural thing and therefore does not have natural properties like a "space-time locus", but until they prove that, I'm staying in this body. It would be greatly appreciated if you help me adjust to this future. I will keep you posted on individual culture shocks and maybe tell you about Earth before it was destroyed.

As millions of people
As millions of people survived the Fall (conquest of the Earth by now-semi-dormant superintelligent seed AIs known as the TITANs) through egocasting and now exist as digital entities, the belief that such beings are souless replicas is unpopular and considered deeply offensive. Some religious sects share your beliefs, but many consider them rather primitive. Others draw the line elsewhere such as banning forking (making a copy of your mind to run at the same time). I would suggest you actually talk to some of those who are without bodies. Can you talk to a little girl who survived the fall thanks to egocasting and still believe that she is without a soul? Can you tell someone whose spouse was recovered from backup that they aren't real? If you insist on sticking to your old body, I would still suggest that you look into backing up your mind and getting some basic biomods (should prevent disease/cancer, stop aging, allow for slow limb regrow, and reduce the need for sleep), mesh inserts (the internet in your head), and a cortical stack (black box for your brain). I hear that curing cancer was a big deal back in your time. Even if your current incarnation thinks a copy isn't really you, said copy might disagree if this you ends up dead. You can live a long time, even with the junker you were born in, with the right mods. An accident could happen tomorrow or a century. Backup insurance is like life insurance used to be (but better), you don't expect it to come up, you don't want it to come up, but if it comes up, you'll want it. You'll need credits (money) and rep (sort of like a credit score + social media points but much more important). I'd suggest getting in touch with some historians or fiction writers. Oh, and if you do decide to ditch upgrade, it might be useful to sell that body of yours, if you can. A mint-condition pre-Fall flat (unaugmented body) would be a collector's item to some hyper-elite (stupidly rich person). ____ The social and political changes might be even crazier.

From: {mesh ID does not exist} I never said that the soul 100% won't transfer. I said I might like some proof before I go risking my life. That scientist might be right about souls not having natural properties, but I need to know.

I didn't think of using copies like that. Still, I think I'll just die when the time is right. I do want to go to heaven and into God's loving embrace and I can't do that if I keep reincarnating, assuming that the copy stuff works in the first place. Besides, the scientists are arranging for some nomads to take my physical body to Titan, Saturn, if that is the correct syntax, but it would take a while and appearantly I really wouldn't agree with their culture. I'll stay at the station until the nomads arrive. What's the worst this "Planetary Consortum of Arabian Frenchmen" going to do anyway, take over the station?

If this heaven was so nice,
If this heaven was so nice, how did people in your time live as long as they did? Suicide apparently disqualifies you (though you did say you considered it), but what level of negligence is expected when it comes to staying alive? You manually drove vehicles which often crashed and burst into flames, but still used safety equipment. You used vaccines and other medical technology. Would your god (God?) object to ignoring all these methods of preventing your death in the hopes of meeting him early? In this era, immortality is almost trivial. True death only comes from great tragedy, suicide, or gross negligence. What level of due diligence will you, and your God, accept? With basic biomods, you can live almost indefinitely, if you're careful and have the occasional checkup. You'll be immune to most illness, even cancer, and can even regrow limbs, albeit slowly. These might be required some places for health reasons. Some would still see you as being negligent for not backing up, needlessly risking your life.

Glad to see another human on here. First off, you don't need to farcast. Don't let them fool you into killing yourself and uploading your body into a computer. That is how Humanity fell in the first place. Most of the "people" you speak to on this system are actually just programs. They are artificial intelligence emulating real humans packed into a cyber-brain. More often than not, their primary directive is to see their continued propagation and calculate moral quandaries to make you doubt yourself. The others are people who have had an artificial intelligence implanted in their brain by "Farcasting" or "Resleeving" and are generally biased about this matter. I am neither. Like you, I am still human; one that managed to escape Earth before the Fall took it. On here, you can just call me DROP. I represent a coalition of humans (actual-humans) known as the Jovian Republic. We've colonized Jupiter, and are the last god-fearing group of people in the whole god damn solar system. Most of us are in our original bodies, and there is a very good reason for that. Because humanity is a dwindling thing, the Jovian republic has a long-standing tradition of offering substantial bounties for bringing humans originally from Earth into our fold. The Republic would gladly fund your transition back to Jupiter, and welcome you with open arms into humanity's last bastion. The republic isn't perfect. Many people here will call us 'xenophobic' or even a 'junta', but we have heart, and are the last people who will to carry on Humanity's name into the new age. If you want, I can put you in contact with the right people and have a ship sent your way. Transit will take longer than far-casting, to be sure, but you'll make it to us with your soul intact. That much, I can guarantee.

You should be careful with
You should be careful with the Jovian Junta (they prefer "Jovian Republic", like "The People's Republic of China" or the "Democratic People's Republic of Korea" aka North Korea from your time). While they do have some democratic institutions, they are highly militaristic (citizenship is contingent on military service) and there is no freedom of the press or assembly. Technology is highly controlled "for your own good." Even if you disagree with resleeving, there are other technological wonders in this time that few can access in Jovian space. However, I can see how Jovian conservatism and religious influence might be appealing to you. The system has changed a lot since your time, so perhaps adapting to living on a hab is extreme enough. Just try not to absorb all of their bigotry against non-human sapient life, such as uplifts (sapient life uplifted from animals) and AGI (artificial general intelligence, known as "Strong AI" in your time, IIRC).

Comments on North Korea aside, this individual has actually done their homework on the Republic and is mostly correct. The Republic has been in a wartime state since its inception. We are the only major faction left (Aside from various... anonymous groups) ready to stop the resurgence of TITANs before it starts. While Transhumanity whittles away its false-life in technological hedonism, the Republic is putting everything we have into readying for what comes next. Not everyone is keen on that, or what our policies have been, but there is more to us than a military. In what others see as a 'Neo North Korea', I see a fledgling democracy only a decade old with much room to grow, and we are already making steps in the right direction. For example, while we're making comparisons to Earth civilizations, should we stop and talk about how the planetary consortium literally sponsors and supports slavery? Back on Earth, we used to throw rocks at those folk and their bloody confederate flags. Beyond a rabble of Anarchists and a group of loonies literally controlled by computers, the Republic is the only government in the system who has had the common sense to ban it. Not a lot of people out here can say the same.

From: {mesh ID does not exist} The scientists and I are considering your offer. Some of them are debating it pretty hotly. Even though waiting for you would probably take longer than waiting for the nomads, it seems safer to me. The scientists seem to have a pretty low opinion of the nomads, even going so far as to call them "scum".

The "scum" actually call
The "scum" actually call themselves scum. While originally a slur, they have embraced it. The term doesn't have the same meaning as it did in your time. Scum are... an acquired taste. They are very liberal when it comes to morphological freedom, drugs, and sex. You might find their culture rather jarring, but they are generally friendly. Of course, they are the antithesis of the Jovian Republic. Basically as long as all involved parties consent, nothing is taboo. Freedom is very important to them. You could get into an argument if you're too vocal about your bioconservative views, but unless you do something really bad, you're probably just going to deal with alienation or argument rather than violence. It would be a crash course in the weirdest parts of the future.

The Fall
From: {mesh ID does not exist} So the Earth got destroyed. I can see it is completely ruined from here, well, not this very room but I can see it from our orbit. So an AI came to life and destroyed everything. Didn't we know better? Whoever programmed that AI should go watch all The Terminator Movies, if those are still a thing. So humanity, or "transhumanity" now lives in space, more on that later. I mean seriously, HAL, GLaDOS, Am? Do any of them ring a bell? Actually, they probably don't, do they? But still! We have been warned against this stuff. Now there are AI robots walking around to this day but they are "good AI". I don't see the distinction but they aren't wiping out humanity, or "transhumanity", so I guess they are alright. More on them later.

Seed AI, like the TITANs, can
Seed AI, like the TITANs, can rewrite and self improve rapidly, expanding through the system they inhabit towards superintelligence. Normal AGI have a mental architecture much like transhumans. They can learn new things, but no faster than you could. Some are a bit naive or odd compared to humans, but they are people. They are socialized and developed in a similar way. They aren't just programmed, they're raised. Seed AIs, after their self-improvement, are more like evil gods (small "g"): vast, incomprehensible, and powerful. The TITANs developed technology so advanced it might as well be magic. They predicted our actions before we thought of them. They pursued incomprehensible goals and disappeared without explanation. In hindsight, the folly of creating such things was obvious, but old Earth had many competing governments. The idea of a pet god was tempting and the possibility of one's enemies having one was terrifying. Not unlike nuclear weapons, in a way, though obviously far more dangerous.

Well, don't let them make the decisions for you. {File Uploaded: Jovian_Scouting_Contact.nroLnk} Accessing that file will put you in contact with an associate of mine who is (in only the broadest terms possible) "Nearby" on some shipping buisness. Disregard the static; he uses that to counteract something called a Basilisk hack, which is a whole other matter that he has been paranoid about since I was first given communications with him. He will likely ask you some questions to ensure you aren't an async, and there are some protocol he will follow to ensure the whole station isn't controlled by a TITAN threat that slipped through the Interdiction. On that, just pulling back the curtains for a moment; I am purposefully putting you in contact with someone who is paranoid about TITAN threats for a reason. This is because there is a very small (And yet, due to the repercussions, extremely threatening) possibility that you could be a rogue TITAN AI that is controlling the facility. No offense meant, but perfectly emulating a fall evacuee stumbling out of cold storage is well within the abilities of those monsters. Try not to think about it. Anyways, in a few months when his ship arrives, there may be a some tense moments involving that. However, so long as you are clean, you should be able to glide through those hurdles without Franklin or one of the various Jovian Immigration checkpoint officers becoming violently patriotic. Best of luck.

Culture Shock: Sleep
From: {mesh ID does not exist} So there isn't that much room in space, sounds ironic huh, I slept in a glorified closet. Back on Earth, we slept in entire rooms. They were about as big as... actually, I do not have much to relate it to in this time. I do not know a lot about space architecture, but our rooms were a lot bigger than the ones you have now. Apparently, everyone in the future only needs to sleep for about three or four hours due to genetic modification. I have to sleep for a full eight hours. Of course, the robots, or "AGI", don't need to sleep, not quite sure what I was expecting. They do need to meditate or something though, so that's weird. I almost feel guilty for how much earlier my supervisors awoken. I have supervisors, more on them later. It kinda feels like they are working very hard to make sure I'm comfortable and I'm just taking advantage of them, even though that's just when they happen to wake up. They mostly weren't tired or anything, just straight to science. One of my supervisors, who is apparently over a hundred by the way, more on that later (and he's not even the only one), is visibly tired at all times. I think he's depressed about something but I do not know how to properly help him. Poor guy.

I reached out to a friend on
I reached out to a friend on a scum swarm that should be passing by you. Scum swarms are a convoy of ships, so they take something of a scenic route, but their path goes within spitting distance of Jupiter (there are some moons that are friendlier). She knows your situation and can get you some space. She can also hook you up with some basic mods, or fancier stuff if you want, no charge. I'd suggest at least some basic biomass. Low G and freefall is really bad for flats. You lose bone and muscle mass without them, a real problem for the few astronauts of your time. Few hand bother with full Earth gravity, if they spin at all. They use a rep based economy. Basically you contribute to society to earn rep, lose it if you're a bad neighbor. The more rep you have, the more willing people are to do favors for you. Basic needs like food, water, medical, life support, mesh access, etc are free. Even low rep people can use other stuff, but there might be a queue. Getting those mod might have taken a while for someone with no rep, but I pulled some strings. My friend might be a bit flirtatious, but if you tell her to stop, she'll back off. Currently she's rocking an elf look, violet eyes, long ears, silver hair, and slender, if busty, body. She's not a fan of the Jovians, mostly because they wouldn't consider some of her close friends to be people, but understands you're new here. The place is clothing optional, but most do wear clothes. Ask what's in the drinks before you drink them. Most won't try to slip you something dangerous, but what they think is normal might not be what you do. In your time, if you were given a glass of something at a party, it might contain alcohol, but not because someone was trying to slip you something. The scum life isn't for everyone, but it gives you a nice tour of the system. See what you like.

From: {mesh ID does not exist} That would definitely take some getting used to. I'm considering the bio mods. Culture Shock: Aliens
From: {mesh ID does not exist} So there are aliens now, I guess I should have expected that. We have these intelligent octopus-like aliens call "Octo-Morphs" that have pretty advanced technology. There are also these hairy, tall, anthropomorphic aliens that remind me of skinny gorillas or something. The scientists have also mentioned a species of intelligent fungus! That's not all, they assigned some people to look after me since they are the most qualified people to know my culture. Thing is, one of the people in charge of looking after me is some "human" little girl, but she claims to be over a hundred years old. Now that I think of it, maybe I should specify whether or not she's talking about Earth years. A moon year might be faster. The most bizarre case is this one entity that lives entirely as information, and they aren't even aliens apparently. They are called the "infomorphs". They aren't build into the station on some computer, oh no, they exist on the internet. That's crazy! This may be old news to you, but you can imagine how this feels to me, right? I mean, I should have expected them but I wasn't quite prepared for them.

You don't need mesh inserts.
You don't need mesh inserts. There are things called ectos that are similar to tablets, smartphones, smartwatches, etc. from your time, but far more advanced. Mesh inserts are just more convenient, often considered faster, and also include medical monitoring sensors. You can even get them in the form of glasses or contacts (they come in all sorts of forms). Only the Factors (fungus aliens you mentioned) are actually aliens. Transhumans have uplifted several animals to human intelligence and sapience. However, don't assume that the ego (mind) matches the morph (body). While most egos are more comfortable in a form close to their birth, some choose to sleeve into more exotic morphs. An avian uplift might be most comfortable in a neo-avian (bird) morph, but how many people of your time fantasized about the possibility of flying through the air as a bird. The term "transhumanity" is meant to be more inclusive, as our family includes minds that aren't human and those who have chosen different bodies. We generally use Earth years, though moons tend to use the same year as the planet they orbit to the limited extent that they use years at all. Also, a couple notes on terminology: Earth's moon is called "Luna" since transhumanity lives on several moons throughout the system and the mesh, while superficially similar to the internet of your time, is different in important ways. For one thing, the mesh is ad-hoc, without as many central nodes, and almost entirely wireless. Also, the long distances between places in the solar system means that a mesh is mostly local. Getting information from far away habs can have a significant delay just because of the limits of the speed of light (there is a form of FTL communication through quantum entanglement, but it is very expensive and limited). Millions of people who lived on Earth were only able to escape the TITANs through egocasting. Many left all their wealth and possessions on Earth. So they had literally nothing but their minds. We have a shortage of morphs many places. Some projects in the outer system seek to produce basic morphs for everyone, but there is a waiting list. In the Planetary Consortium (inner system), corporations often indenture infugees, offering them a morph in exchange for years of service. There are some horror stories of exploitation through indenture contracts, changing terms, hidden fees, planned obsolescence, etc. Some actually choose a digital life, however. Digital living space is cheap or free and can be quite vast. Simulspaces can offer many VR experiences. Most have some yearning for a physical life, but to each their own.

I got a mesh ID
From: William Lee, Argonaut Historian {Info Msg Rep} I got a mesh ID so I could gain Rep. I don't entirely understand this new economy but I think I get the basics. I've been helping around the station by being an extra set of hands in the robotics lab as well as being some sort of 21st century historian. My supervisors are trying to train me in various jobs so that I can successfully integrate into wherever I end up.

Culture Shock: Communication
From: William Lee, Argonaut Historian {Info Msg Rep} So nobody talks anymore. Instead, and you probably already knew this, people send radio waves or lasers at each other and that is translated like telepathy. That's pretty cool, I guess, but the station feels so cold without the sound of anyone talking. I can't even hear most of the machines. It's quite maddening. The scientists did give me some ecto devices that allow me to use the internet and hear them speak. I'm used to seeing people talk when they talk instead of just hearing it. Plus, we can always hear each other at the same volume even if we are relatively far away, so that's weird.

Culture Shock: Details
From: William Lee, Argonaut Historian {Info Msg Rep} There are many details around the station that are worth mentioning. For example, everyone is more attractive in the future, but I guess that makes sense, they must have better medical technology and diets. The colors are also a lot brighter. All the colors: clothes, eyes, skin, hair, tools, everything. If I where to cut one red hair from a redhead and put it into the ocean, the ocean would turn pink. Like I said, this applies to everything. What kind of technology are they putting in dyes? It's not even just dyes, people's eyes and skin are like this too! Their eyes are practically glowing and their skin looks like they have some sort of high quality full body make-up base. Is it the diet? The tools are pretty weird. You don't have wrenches or hammers the same way we did. Now, you have these fancy-looking rocks that do the job somehow. Some of them just change shape on the fly like some sort of smart slime.

It's like I have been tired and felt aches all over my body all my life, but I was so used to it that I didn't even feel it. Now, the fatigue and aches are completely gone. Also, some alarming news. I'm no longer circumcised. I'm not going to go into detail because I do not know how that will effect my rep but it's back with a vengeance. I stepped out of the healing vat and I guess it healed everything.

I strongly recommend that you
I strongly recommend that you don't go on a long tour with scum before having acclimated a bit more, and set foot on a barge once or twice. There's few places in the system that aren't visited every now and then, especially the larger ones, and usually such visits have a "The circus is coming to town" nature to them, with people shuttling back and forth between barges and habitat. Be prepared for a continuous culture shock. I grew up on Earth and studied medicine, and after half a year of living as scum I only start to get used to the lifestyle. It's not just the morphs, the drugs, the orgies, and the recreational psychosurgery that people ask me to perform on them. If you're just visiting, "circus" is a reasonable mode of interaction; You give resources, you're treated to the sights and wares. If you're traveling with us, however, you better become part of the community, otherwise your journey will become veeeeeery long, subjectively speaking. And with all your hangups, becoming part of the community would probably be a challenge.

From: Elspeth Elliott, Octavia Shareholder {Info Msg Rep} You're a very curious individual. I guess a lot of your confusion comes as much from culture shock as from being around people who aren't prepared to deal with someone's basic socialization. You haven't been introduced to a muse, you didn't download even a smallest package of Sol Archive to have basic definitions of stuff around you and nobody is doing a good job of showing you how to acclimate seemlessly. The only good thing your 'caretakers' have done so far was managing to not let you get yourself injured. Everyone is thinking about introducing you to various groups before you're ready to not get yourself into trouble. I'd advise to check the Sol Archive with any ecto and scan everything you find weird or strange. Also, make sure you get yourself even a basic vacc suit, don't worry, having protection where you can get to it should be considered basic survival, even double for someone who don't want to lose their precious biomorph.

Scum swarms do at least have
Scum swarms do at least have the advantage of cheap travel for someone who doesn't know where they're going. Some of them go everywhere. But yes, they are every flavor of culture shock. My friend should be a good chaperone to prevent any major misunderstandings and it might be good to have at least some look at the wider system before you decide on Jovian space. Not many people leave the Jovian Republic. I'm not saying they're forced to stay (some believe that, though they tend to be people who can't wrap their head around the culture), but Jovian media doesn't really portray the outside world in a positive light. I'm not saying media outside their sphere says very nice things about them, but free press and unfiltered mesh use gives competing viewpoints rather than a single source of propaganda. Scum might not be the best choice to immerse oneself, but the swarm I mentioned should swing through a number of places. ____ Have you heard of forking? It's where you copy your mind and have it run without you, sometimes after being pruned down to be not-quite-you. You merge back together not too long afterwards into a single person with both memories. Long term forks can be difficult to remerge, but under 12 hours is safe with professional help and under 4 hours is pretty trivial. If the copy is a copy and your "soul" remains in your body, you can see what it's like to be a bird or pure data or other wonders. An easier way would be to get mesh inserts and look at an XP (experience playback). XPs are records of a person's full experience. You aren't just seeing through someone's eyes, but fully experiencing what they did. I have some nice neo-avian race XPs. High-speed flying through obstacle courses. ___ By the way, you can get re-circumcised with a healing pod. Any surgical procedure, cosmetic or otherwise, that was available in the early 21st century (and a lot more) is as trivial now as getting a tattoo, but far easier to reverse. I've had friends do a sex change just to see how it feels. You really don't have to be afraid of surgery now. 21st century surgery was butchery by comparison. A surgeon would cut through muscle and skin with knives, shove around your organs, and then sew you you up with needle and thread, hopefully not leaving a tool inside. When an organ was damaged a replacement would be harvested from the dead and jerry-rigged to work, requiring the suppression of the patient's immune system for life with drugs, with the obvious dangers that entails. When I read about this bit of history, I had nightmares.

Just wait until you get a taste (pun not intended, but applicable) of all the other available genital options... For that matter, that's another reason to get a mesh implant. It'll allow you to replay full sensory recordings. I do second, though, that you should get a muse as soon as possible. Even we who are up to date rely on them to filter all the information around us, so that we can keep up with the essential bits. You, however, have to accumulate all the common knowledge that we picked up since childhood.

I know a guy who named every sexual organ he's had in every morph, some of which have more than one, and attributes a personality to each one. _____ You can find some good, open-source muses here. There are a few muses you can get from corps that are packed with adware.

Can muses hear my every thought?
You talk to muses by thinking, right? Can they hear every single thought you have? Some thoughts might end up being... Controversial.

You talk to you muse through
You talk to you muse through your mesh inserts which have a mental interface. It doesn't read your mind per se, though some people "talk aloud" to themselves in a way, either accidentally or purposefully. Regardless, your muse is not a person like an AGI is and to the extent that it has a position on anything, it's completely on your side. It isn't going to share your secrets or think poorly of you (though you can get some rather sassy ones). Your muse will develop a sort of personality as it gets to know you. It might help you if it senses you are down or stressed. It is odd that you worry about that, though. Didn't your time try to have primitive pseudo-muse voice recognition devices that went through a remote server with no protections about how companies could use that information? A muse learns your preferences, but it keeps what it knows rather than handing them over. I'm not saying there haven't been cases of corporate fuckery with muses, but doing so is such a violation, the outcry could ruin a business even in the most corp-friendly areas. Actually, your muse could help with controversial thoughts, by doing quick research for you so you don't have to ask uncomfortable questions that violate social norms.

If you're still planning on using my contact, I'd avoid getting a muse. They are illegal on Jupiter, along with most AI that approach sentience. Nothing to fear from Biomods, though. Even we have them.

Muses are no more
Muses are no more sophisticated than other dumb AI. They are just especially social. I think you should get a muse. You can always remove it from your mesh inserts later (I did double check that mesh inserts are allowed in the JR, though not muses). However, I doubt you'll want to. People get very attached to their muse and find them very useful. Might as well experience a few of the wonders of this age before deciding whether to shun them forever or not.

If you value anything at all,
If you value anything at all, stay the hell away from those maniacs in the Junta. No, I'm serious. They may pretend at being the heirs of the red, white and blue, but they're a facist regime that has more in common with the DPRK of your time than the United States. If you want my advice, you should try to make your way to Titan. You're probably too far out of the loop to make yourself very useful in any anarchist hab, and while I'm autonomist to the core, most flavors of anarchism can wind up very short on patience with those who don't get it, for whatever the local flavor of it is, but it almost invariably involves bare minimum "pulling your own weight" with regards to habitat maintenance or otherwise making yourself useful enough to be worth being a "carry". (And even then, a "carry" may wind up deeply disliked, even if they are vital to a habitat's survival.) Do not go to Extropia, or any other Extropian habitat. You will almost certainly find yourself very quickly forced to sign yourself into slavery for basic survival, all the while being told how they subscribe to the nonaggression clauses of the Points of Unity and they're totally not coercing you into anything - it's just that if you don't, you don't have any resources to buy protection, so somebody's gonna just take your morph from you by force and it's kosher because you couldn't afford a security contract. Same with going to Mars, the Lunar-Lagrange Alliance, or the Morningstar Coalition - slavery is legal there, and someone like you is gonna wind up on InDex in short order, if not in cold storage. And yes, those places will forcibly separate you from your morph as a default on debts they feel you incurred. You probably don't want to experience that.

I'm not saying there are
I'm not saying there are robust corporate protections now. Heck there are numerous data mining projects, both public and private. People are listening, but we aren't telling them everything directly like in your time. There are public spimes (sensors/cameras/etc.) that anyone can look at. If you have a muse, they can monitor the area for you and point out objects of interest (once it learns what you find interesting).

That is true for *most* muses. Definitely not all though. There are quite a few models based on AGI neuro-architecture, and that's not counting more exotic versions like people using forks of themselves, or psychosurgically modified other people, as muses. Always read the fine print. And in the case of Open Source muses, if in doubt, contact the maintainers. *After* having read up on the topic. Most project maintainers in general are very approachable, but frankly, their time is valuable, and better spent developing stuff.

I agree with the broad strokes of these recommendations, but that is because I am me, and not the person that these recommendations are for. So, for the purpose of making an individualized recommendation: What would you like to use your lifetime for?

Well, there's reckless
Well, there's reckless hedonism, exploration (we found these alien artifacts that send you to planets outside the solar system), artistic expression, research (you'll need more time to get up to speed, but you have time), some religious thing, charitable work, and so on. You could look for another relationship, not that you couldn't have tried that in the 21st century. Everything you knew is gone, but there is more still here. No one tells you the purpose of life. You just have to figure that out for yourself.

As before, I'd suggest you make your way to Titan. Frankly, I'd consider dumping your body on the Martian or Lunar oligarchs as a collector's piece, getting a ton of credits and using it to egocast to Titan (get a Hazer,) and stashing the rest in a bank account or something, but that's up to you. Either way, make your way to Titan. You need to hit the books and frankly, there's bound to be someone on Titan for whom "educate a person who grew up prior to the 21st century and spent it on ice" sounds like the Project they're looking for. Get yourself familiarized with the ins-and-outs of modern technology, society and the ways and means by which we do things, then figure out what you want to do. Play around with it; think about the things you always liked doing/thinking and see if there's a way you can parlay that into a rep-spinner. Just look at Momo von Satan of the Monster Raving Goblin Cock News Network for a great example of someone parlaying larking about into a major media presence - also, she and the Cock are fucking hilarious. (Why no, I do not get anything for plugging MRGCNN, I just find the Chewy Gristle hour fucking awesome.) Or think about the things that were awesome/high tech/elite/science fiction skills in your era. You ever wanted to be an astronaut? Boy, you are an astronaut! Wanted to be a drone operator? Sure. Wanted to play with nanites?! Son, we got your nanites right here. [e]Oh, give some serious thought to more than just getting yourself up to modern "can move about without wrecking things" standards. Aarhus is home to Titan Tech and Titan Autonomous University. Do you like higher education and academia? No better place in the system. Or out of it.

While dumping his morph might
While dumping his morph might make him a lot of money, Will understandably holds rather antiquated views about ego uploading. The concept of separating mind and body was the realm of niche science fiction in the early 21st century. If you remember your history, it took quite a while for established religions to warm up to the idea. Heck, a big reason why it's as widely accepted as it is now is that staunch bio-cons were less likely to have left Earth before the Fall or be able to do so during the Fall. Also, religions that rejected the personhood of infolife were less popular in light of the millions of infugees. When you can talk to your grandma because of egocasting, it's harder to demonize it. There are some interesting philosophical and religious works supporting uploading through the duality of the soul and body. There are also bio-con sects that reject these more novel technologies. I've even seen one sect that fork themselves to fill giant digital cathedrals to magnify their prayer and worship, even considering time dilation to get the most praise for their God. It takes all kinds. William, here are some of the transitional philosophical and religious works from when ego uploading was becoming mainstream. Are you Christian? It seems that was the most common religion at the time, especially in areas where the name "William" and the English language were most used. Plus your terminology ("God", "souls", etc.) seemed to fit. I might have slanted the selection more pro-upload, but I tried to present popular works from both sides.

Culture Shock: Capitalism
William Lee, Argonaut Historian {Info Msg Rep} The economy has changed a lot since I was frozen, there is now this rep system. There are places with capitalism, but the class divides are insane. It's ironic, in the past, we viewed capitalism as a means to avoid everyone being poor, but everyone is poor except the hyper elite.
