Questions: Portable Server Aptitude Limits
I'm wondering. What the aptitude limits for infomorphs are while running on a portable server? See Transhuman p. 146 for details on the portable server. It says it has the capacity for 10 infomorphs but does not mention aptitude limits. Stuff already said in the chapter says that most servers have a limit of 30, so I'm inclined to believe that is the limit the portable server has. I'm looking for ways to make sure that infomorphs on a portable server gets to have better aptitudes caps. I'm aiming for 40. Maybe there was something that I missed that someone knows. If not, I could probably make up some rules.

The easiest way is to run distributed, so tape a few ectos to the side or similar.

Just my luck. My fabber has told me that I've used up my duct tape allowance. I don't know why it has decided to limit me, only that it has determined that I can't be up to any good. ;)

Yeah, it doesn't really specify does it? When I last DM'd, my houserule was that a portable server reduced the apt max by 5 for every two egos stored. So if there were 2 egos housed, 40, 4 egos is 35, and so on, winding up at 20 for the full 10 egos.

Where two or more are gathered in My name, there I am with them
Depending on how much you trust your party (or vice-versa), you can just run distributed across their mesh inserts. RAW you only need a minimum of two devices to count as "distributed" and reap all the benefits (and downsides) thereof, so technically you can be running without aptitude limits anywhere that two or more party members are in mesh contact. Or one party member with a spare ecto on their belt (which can be hardwired with a fiber-optic cable, if you have a need for radio silence). This is of course counting on the fact that the inserts/ectos in question can run you at aptitude 20 on their own (they're "personal computers"), in order to argue that if one can run you alone then surely two can run you together (to avoid "minimal processing environment" rules). This is before considering your party is likely carrying several devices that could count as "peripherals", and contribute to your distributed network if you need to eke out some more processing power. Granted, it's an argument that is likely to raise the GM's eyebrows and it substantially amplifies the risk if a party member goes Exsurgent (since if they're part of your network at the time they can infect you, and then you infect everyone else you're running on). Although if you have proper boundaries and permissions in place you could probably ensure that getting you would still require a hacking attempt, which you could respond to by jettisoning the offending party member from the network and killing their comms.
End of line.

Thanks for the suggestions.
Thanks for the suggestions. However, I'm hoping to avoid needing to use the mesh to get high aptitudes. I'm even considering designing a new bot that carries a better server. I was thinking that maybe morph creation rules could be adapted to create custom servers. Use the rules to determine the traits of the server you want, then use the price given as the price per slot. However, the numbers for aptitude 40 would be 12500 cr, which is quite a bit higher than the price given to private servers (250 per slot). I'm thinking that dividing that number by 10 to 1250 per slot is bit more reasonable priced. However, I'm a bit worried that I'm fudging the numbers a bit too much.

It's super cheap in the rules, but you can just hardwire in a bunch of devices to run "distributed", basically a fake server. I think the latter numbers you came up with are fine. Higher aptitude caps aren't so powerful in or out of setting that they should be that expensive.

I punched in the stats of a portable server through the morph creation rules (without the server) and the final result came to be 750 cr (before rounding). There is plenty of room to fit in a 2500 cr server (10 egos). Refitting the bot with a better server, the aptitude 40 server (mentioned earlier) with 10 slots, would be 12500 cr. Add the in the cost of the server bot and you get a total of 13250 cr (maybe round up to 15000 cr). Does that seem reasonable? Maybe I'll design a new portable server while I'm thinking about it. While I'm thinking about it. Do we need to be able to further improve servers beyond the aptitude cap? Skill bonuses, a +10 amounts to 1250 cr, but I'm thinking 500 or even 250. Augments and aptitude bonuses I don't think are that important when your Eidolon can provide those bonuses.

No comments? Alright then. It seems that a +10 bonus to a skill for the price of [Low] should be OK. A lot of things give bigger bonuses to stuff for a price of [Low]. As for making improvements to the portable server, there really isn't much to improve upon without changing what it is supposed to do. It is literally a server that can move itself and has a few extra features such as hands and storage spaces for small bots. I mean, I can make it a heavily armored portable server or one that can merge with flexbots, but that'll add significant costs and stuff.
