strain DV?
Hi! I'm still translating Eclipse into Polish. Currently I work on the end of 2/5 of Gear chapter, I also translated the Trait and Skills. But that not what I want to talk about, just some context of it ;-) I'm translating Psike-out. There is a mechanics term I do not understand, therefore I do not know how to translate that. Psike-Out: Psike-out bolsters an async’s psi abilities. Apply a +20 modifier to the async’s Psi skill tests for the drug’s duration. However, also apply +2 to all strain DVs for the drug’s duration. What is strain DV? I believe DV is "damage value", but I do not understand at all this part. Does normally using Psi cause any damages to the character? Or maybe there are damages caused to victims of psi powers, not users? Sorry, I never read fully Eclipse Phase Mainbook so perhaps that's why I do not understand. Usually I skip mechanics and just jump to the character creation and world's description. EDIT: I looked at the book and it seems that strain DV are some damages taken by user when activating Psi...? I mean, are they physical damages or mental or...? I mean, I used ctrl+f to find "strain mod" but it shows me either the last chapter of the book or some things in the psi section, but neither is a definition.

Strain is the damage incurred
Strain is the damage incurred when an async uses their abilities. Taking Psike-Out increases this damage by 2.

Ok, thank you, I could not
Ok, thank you, I could not find it in the book :) Just one thing, are they mental damages or physical ones? ;-)

The cost of using sleights is DV that the async endures. Representing their brain doing things it wasn't meant to do. Think of all of those media visualizations where people with psychic powers get nosebleeds or blood vessels burst in their eyes (causing them to have red eyes from strain). Or what SquireNed said.
Exhuman, and Humanitarian.

Strain is mention on p. 223
Strain is mention on p. 223 in the core rulebook.
Quote:
STRAIN The use of psi is physically (and sometimes psycho- logically) draining to a psi user. This phenomenon is known as strain and manifests as fatigue, exhaustion, pain, neural overload, cardiovascular stress, and ady- namia (loss of vigor). Though strain has only rarely been known to actually kill an async, the use of too much active psi can be life-threatening in some circumstances.
It goes on for a few more paragraphs. So there is a cost to use psi powers, and it is a price that a user often pays with their health. So the drug in question is kinda like adrenaline. It makes your psi stronger, but is also makes you more likely to do the psi equivalent of pulling a muscle or twisting your ankle. Use at your own risk.
