Seveneves hasn't gotten great reviews, and I think that's too bad, especially if you're an EP fan thinking about not reading it. People who found it a snore just don't like hard SF.
Want to get a feel for some of the hard SF problems transhumanity would have to overcome to survive the Fall? Holy cats, this book. Stephenson has done a ton of research on things like orbital mechanics and the effects of space on the human body, and it shows. He also does a good job with depicting day to day life in microgravity, as well as the "engineering vs. nature" struggle inherent to subsisting in space.
Yeah, I concede some of the critics' points r/e its artistic worth relative to other Stephenson nvoels. But I'm too much of a space nerd to have found it anything but arresting.
