Janteloven
I've seen quite a few interpretations of Titanian Janteloven, so I thought I'd try to list them out in a somewhat simplified manner. Please let me know if I've missed some. 1) Bragging about how awesome you are is rude. 2) Being popular is bad. 3) Being better at something is bad. 4) Never acknowledge that you are good at anything. 5) Be modest. Personally, I interpret it alternately as "don't be an arrogant braggart" and "everyone is just a person", but those seem to be unpopular opinions. How do people here see it?

It seems like a great way to cause a society to stagnate, as the innovators are glared down. That, or force outstanding individuals to become subtle or so forceful they cannot be supressed.

That does help clarify, but it also leaves it open for interpretation. Are people not supposed to be better? Or are the not supposed to flaunt being better? Also, is it purely Norwegian, or a more broadly Scandinavian thing? If it is just in Norway, how would cultural mixing affect the Titanian version?

Speaking thirdhand (a longtime co-worker of mine lived there for years and used to regale me about it regularly), it is pan-Scandanvian (the word for it in each culture is very similar) and it's about not flaunting your skills. There's nothing wrong with being highly skilled in those cultures...you're just not supposed to act like that makes you King Shit of Fuck Mountain. If you do, most people there will take you much less seriously.

That makes a whole hell of a lot more sense that what everyone else here seems to assume.

Seconding Kojak's comments. A good friend worked in Sweden for several years and had some interesting observations. The dynamic we're talking about is different than collective resentment towards gifted people. ("Tall Poppy Syndrome" in the UK and related countries.) Rather, it's about politeness and respect for the others around you. You're expected to work hard and do well, but not rub it anyone's face. Flamboyant personalities and braggarts are looked down on for those reasons, regardless of their skills.
