Decoherence Society [Eclipse Phase, Roll20]
[IMG]http://actualplay.roleplayingpublicradio.com/wp-content/uploads/Resleeve... Kronos Port is the largest Red Market in the Saturn system. It is an object lesson in what happens when anarchy's loose, informal social structures fail to adapt quickly enough to prevent power blocks from forming. So too is it a less in economic freedom leading to economic abuse, not by the highest rungs of society, but the lowest. Almost nothing is illegal, and the enforcement of the law has devolved to a group of brutal Ultimate mercenaries out only for their own profit. Just shy of a million people live along the a series of 'grapevine' accessways and infrastructure supports, divided into fractal sets of submodules with a few odd connections and airways between branches along the vines. The mostly self-sufficient neighborhoods resemble armed camps between anarchist groups, criminals, and other factions. More than anything, Kronos is a chaotic mix of life on the Rim; it cannot be simply encapsulated. Still, there is a rhythm to transhuman life. As something disrupts that rhythm, becomes an anomaly - something outside the pattern, beyond it - it draws outside forces to it, seeking to profit from the discontinuity, or prevent further damage. What is this? This is an Eclipse Phase game. The game will be conducted via Roll20, an online map, dice, and chat program. It will be pure text unless everyone involved wants to use voice. I aim to play this Monday at the earliest, or whenever we can agree on a time and everyone is free. Note that 'free' means actually free; if you are going to be watching videos or babysitting or doing homework as we play, please select a time where you will be actually free or don't play. The game will involve a mix of action and investigation. Characters are not with Firewall. In depth knowledge of Eclipse Phase is not necessary to play, but I plan to move relatively fast; if you've never done IRC RPGs before this is not the place or the system to learn with. Who are the characters? Characters are people who are involved with Kronos in some fashion and interested in what's going on there. They could be natives from before the Fall, refugees who have made a home there, outsiders interested in keeping tabs on the place, etc. They are made with the standard 1000 CP (or 10 packages, if you use the package system). There are also three premade characters available. Joseph Hill: A pirate and criminal operator who bases out of Kronus. Piracy is about electronics, orbits, and sensors, and Hill, a former USAF technician, is an expert at all three. Kronus is his main port of call and, in his more sentimental moments, his home. While the decay of social order and corruption of the KPA have been good for business, the increasingly toxic environment they foster on those he cares about has soured his relationship with the 'authorities'. Maria Deluz: While officially a part of the Titanian consulate on Kronos, it is an open-ish secret that Deluz is actually on the payroll of Titanian Public Security Section 4, and mostly responsible for keeping an eye on the kinds of people coming and going from Kronos to the Titanian Commonwealth. This kind of job is the quintessential backwater posting for an operative that is either politically inept, or else too burnt out to be much use elsewhere, and Maria is the latter. Still, underneath the drinking (and drinking and drinking) there's the heart of a skilled agent, who might actually have a chance to do something she's proud of for once in her life. Dhaval Mangal: A native 'guide' to Kronos, Mangal was a refugee who arrived here five years ago, at the worst point during the collapse of Kronos as a functional society. He makes a living hooking up rich clients with people who can provide them what they need, and negotiating between different anarchist and criminal factions for passage. When he isn't doing that, he participates in brutal zero-G martial arts and freerunning competitions - he has something of a dream of making it big as a metaceleb. How do I join? Post interest here (and what character you'd like, or what your character idea is), and what time you'd like to play. Hopefully we'll have enough people to sort this out shortly enough. If you don't have one already, get a Roll20 account and take a brief scan through the documentation.

Curious about use of text for
Curious about use of text for roleplaying - I wonder about efficiency vs voice?

IRC is definitely less
IRC is definitely less efficient in some ways, but not everyone has a microphone, and not everyone wants to use voice for other reasons. Sometimes it's just easier to do things in character via text than trying to fake different accents and manners of speaking. But anyway, this is still open. I didn't get enough interest here or elsewhere to run it today, so it's on hold until I get enough interest. Alternatively, I'm considering just running a straight up Firewall game sometime via Roll20; if that's more interesting.

Don't have the time to join
Don't have the time to join in a live game, sadly, but doublethink, text can work pretty well, especially for small groups. As someone who has done text-based RP on MUSHes for years, it is definitely slower than voice, but you can still get a lot done in a standard 3-4 hour game session assuming people respond reasonably quickly. It mostly bogs down when you get too many people or you have people that are doing other stuff while they're playing and are being slow because of it.

New deadline is now Friday,
New deadline is now Friday, October 17. If I don't have enough characters by then (from here or elsewhere), then I'll cancel this and maybe try something else.

I like teaser you've given us
I like teaser you've given us. If I hadn't jumped from zero to three games reoccurring in the last month, I'd be down for playing. But the wife does like it when I spend time with her too... Which is to say it may just be a bad time for the forum regulars, not disinterest in the game you've presented.

Ah, shame I didn't see this
Ah, shame I didn't see this until now. If you're still looking to run this--or another EP game--I'd be interested in joining. I'm not familiar with Roll20, but after taking a look at the tutorial video, it seems fairly straightforward. Anyway, let me know what your plans are, and hopefully you can find some more interested parties around.

I'm still running it; I have
I'm still running it; I have 2 confirmed players and 2 possibles. If you'd still like to join, either submit a character ASAP or claim one of the premades (thus far no one has a claim on Joseph Hill, and one of the maybes is waffling on whether to pick Maria or Dhaval). I'm still not sure when it's actually going to run; probably early next week but possibly as late as next weekend (ie, 25th-26th). Let me know what times you're available so I can try to figure this out.

Awesome, glad to hear you
Awesome, glad to hear you found some interested players. In terms of my character, the general idea is an neo-orang doctor who discovered the lab that uplifted her (and, subsequently, became her employer) was involved in some gruesome stuff involving uplifts and TITAN-level technology. She understandably got the hell out of dodge and has been laying low on Kronos, opening up a "free clinic" of sorts that is available to everyone, anarchist, criminal or otherwise. If you'd like, I could put together a character sheet and throw it up on google docs or something. Let me know what you think. EDIT: Schedule-wise, I'll be out of town all day on the 25th, and won't be back until probably late afternoon/early evening on the 26th (I'm on CST time). Other than that, generally the later the better (after 8 PM CST would be ideal) for most nights, weekends might be a little more flexible.

Interesting. I only really RP online with a group of friends I know IRL, and Roll20 has enabled that fantastically (WebRTC, character sheets, dice rolling, collaborative map, sounds/music). As I get older, I've favoured reducing RP online to 2hr sessions on weeknights - very focused and punchy RP sessions. I suspect IRL RP will follow similar patterns. So yeh, text based would be a challenge I think, to get anything done in 2 hours? What do you think?

Acatalepsy, what timezone are you based in? I don't think I should request to join, since I've only read a few EP sourcebooks, listened to the RPPR podcasts, and never actually played any EP. I'd slow things down.

I love text games and would love to see how EP works with a non pregen
