Or: how I imagine Eclipse Phase would look like.
First 10 minutes was Gatecrashing!
Setting aside the comedic aspects, I kept thinking to myself "this IS EP".
Go see it. An enjoyable movie, funnier than the trailer makes it out to be.

Eclipse Phase?
Huh. I was thinking it was a spot-on realization of Bulldogs. http://brennan-taylor.squarespace.com/#/bulldogs/
So much so that I wonder if the "2008" team might be influenced by the RPG a little bit.
I guess homicidal furry animals. and big lunks with harts of gold. and funny colored space nazis are something of tropes. So parallel evolution isn't out of the question.
I mean, sure, those characters came out of the 60s and 70s. But they were put together in this way and basically re-invented in 2008 (or more likely a couple years before that).
Even though Groot is an older character, I wouldnt be surprised if he was influenced a bit by Irregular Webcomic's "Quercus".
But yes, bottom line, movie=awesome. bulldogs=awesome. eclipse phase=awesome, although eclipse phase for me is a totally different kind of awesome and usually not this epic, heroic, or slapstick.

Definitely the look rather than the tone
Yep, it was the visual look and set design that invoked EP, rather than the tone.
I like my EP grim and twisted, like my own heart. ;)

Eclipse Phase has plenty of
Eclipse Phase has plenty of room for epic, the problem is most of the setting is leadup to it! :D
On the other hand, that means when you get there, it's been heavily foreshadowed, and everyone you ever met in the adventure is there trying to keep the TQZ from eating Mars entirely, the gangbangers from the flesh trade cranking out weaponized industrial synths from Titan for the AGI you met at MIT, who is pulling off a serious army-of-me while desperately trying to hold the line, but somebody has to smuggle a hydrogen grenade into the heart of darkness. Hey, you guys all have emergency farcasters, right? ;)
As for comedy, you can expect it, like the space in which it hangs, to be quite dark.

Saw it over the weekend and liked it a lot. Despite the more cosmic aspect of the setting there are definitely some themes that are useful for getting the mood in Eclipse Phase.
Particularly, Rocket could serve as the poster being for uplift - especially the mercurial faction! Yondu and the Ravagers are a dead ringer for a pirate Scum swarm. And the whole "group of misfits coming together to stop an apocalyptic technology from falling into the wrong hands" is what the game is all about!

In my last two sessions I had the group dragging around with a raccoon morph gearhead. Threw him in the day after I viewed Guardians. Instant hit!
