Biocon on a scum ship. -Resolved. Conversation still ok-
--Mesh connection made-- Muse!Scapegoat creating public channel... done. Begin Channel 'Biocon on a scum ship. Advice and opinions desired.' ~~~~~~ Hey Mesh. Feel free to reply however you want, Or just stick around for any amusement factor you want. Basically, it all breaks down like this: I was in a bad situation on a brinker hab, And managed to hitch a ride with a passing Scum ship, so long as I help out a little. The rub is, Im kind of a biocon, and obviously, I feel out of place. Ive never seen such a bewildering array of aquatic Biodiversity before, And I'm fairly certain no one here is even an Uplift! Im having a hard time avoiding the odd looks I get, and I get the feeling my entire attitude is kind of out of place. I haven't told anyone I'm a biocon, but I'm pretty sure they know anyway.. Or at least that I'm Far more 'mundane' then them. They are friendly people for the most part, and I find myself having a lot of fun among them, with the things they do that I feel comfortable joining in on. Still, Talk about culture clash. To anyone hearing this, though, I have a couple of questions. First of all, Think this is XP Worthy, or at least update worthy? Second, I'm considering farcasting to a more permanent home, Even if I think its essentially killing yourself off and allowing a copy of you take your place, so while Im enjoying my time here, Anyone have any reccomended habs or planets? Im not strongly affiliated with any faction, so anything aside from the Jovian Junta is possible. Myself, Im thinking that mars, Venus, Or Titan seem the most promising, but all three of these are simply some of the most obvious places on the map, so Im very open to Ideas, and if my interactions with the scum are any indication, It doesn't have to be A particularly Biocon orientated place. --- Update: I already Made my Desicion and enacted it. Conversation is still welcome, however.

Moving to a new Hab.
#Mesh Login: Fixer# Well, each of the three places you've thought of are good choices and they have their good and bad points. One thing to keep in mind is that you'd need to acquire a morph and they are rather pricey for the average joe. I'll admit that I'm a martian and thus heavily biased (In fact I've never even seen earth in over forty years of living aside from the martian sky and the view from my occasional trip to Luna) but Mars is my favorite planet of the system, as it is already well adapted to transhuman life, breathing and cold enhancement and you can easily live in the outdoors. The bad side is that unless you are qualified for skilled work, have an higher education and et cetera, you will probably have to rely on indenture contracts to get work. (If that interest you, I do keep a network of white listed indenture holders which are guaranteed to be fair and involve no contractual traps.) Venus is a truly beautiful places, with a culture that is more liberal than Mars is. Hence why there is a high population of mercurials. Also, access to cornucopia machines are far more available, with the only restrictions being on weapons and dangerous materials such as antimatter. Also if you want to make money easily and lack the skills for better work, surface mining is extremely lucrative. The largest downside of Venus I find are the Isolation between habitats and due to the need to have habitats remain light, goods can be very expensive. Titans as far as I've seen is rather hit and miss. Some people love it, others hate it. It all depends on if you value two things; Personal advancement and Individuality. While Titan is a near techno-utopia, the memes that have taken root strongly discourage going against the mainstream opinion. All citizens have several hours a week of very menial labor to accomplish and while you can create or join a micro corp, you are awarded Kroners which cannot be spent, only reinvested. As such the place is not ideal for someone with unpopular views or who doesn't want to be involved in politics (You need to vote on issues of your choice fairly often.)

Thanks again!
I admit, you already have me leaning on the inner systems, since you can hook me up. Plus, from what I hear of Titan, It might be *somewhat* unfriendly to someone like me, sometimes. Im sure it would be a manageable level, but, Still makes everything else seem interesting. Cant say im fond of Indentured labor, but Im not terribly skilled at things, either, so If I head out to mars, your list will be important. On Venus, I could deal with surface mining since I know a few things about it. Mercurials actually sound interesting, and I would be interested in meeting some. The movement as a whole Is quite fascinating. Anyway, Thank you greatly for the continued advice and potential assistance. Consider me Leaning on heading your way now. Its still going to be awhile before I can cover The farcast costs, let alone afford a morph.

I would be happy to take a look at your XPs if you wish to share them. I have worked with a couple of Scum swarms recently, but they are all so diverse it is a new experience with each. It would be nice to get a moderate biocon perspective on a swarm. The XPs created by Jovians and Primitivist anarchists are universally about shaming the scum. And I am sure you've discovered they deserve better then that. (It's best not to think too hard about how primitivists create XP) As for places to live I am happy to hear you have an open mind. I personally egocast to Long Haul in the Twelve Commons neighborhood a few years ago. The anarchists here are friendly enough and a number of the collectives here work to assist infugees and immigrants to the Saturn area adjust to life in Autonomist space. Mars is a nice planet but I would recommend avoiding indenture work. I'm certain that our Fixer friend is honest when he says all of his contracts are above the board, but it is still difficult to leave the indenture system once you are in it. Many people find themselves taking additional contracts after the first has expired simply because the indenture period did not leave them with time to develop skills for skilled work. - M

Indenture
#Mesh Login: Fixer# I'm myself familiar with how bad indentures are (And I was skilled work) so I wouldn't recommend it, especially not for hyper-corps or Oligarchs, smaller business are generally a better way to go but many people simply have no choice. In my line of work, I've stumbled across a sizable amount of people left in cold storage or taken in by nine lives, hence why I developed a network to help these people get work. If you can acquire some form of work skills before changing habitat, it would really help you tremendously. Currently, engineering skills are wanted as most of the infugees being taken out of cold storage have knowledge that have been quickly outdated with the rapid progress since the fall. For more adventurous souls, other options also exist; Criminal work or Zone Stalking. Both are dangerous, illegal but can pay very well. PS: Did you forget to consider Luna or did you opt against it prior to this post?

I don't mind sharing my XPs
I don't mind sharing my XPs at all. In fact, its part of the reason I asked if people thought they might be interesting enough to check them out. And yeah, Some of my Initial reactions were shock and all that, I can say pretty confidently that the Scum don't deserve much of the shame Primitivists and Jovis throw at them.. but honestly, I doubt *too* many people would be surprised by that assertion. Anyway, Now that I think of it, an Anarchist location might be an interesting experience. I have no idea how it would work, honestly, but it is something else to consider. how is your experience on Long Haul so far? If you dont mind my asking anyway. And yeah. Indentured work is pretty unappealing, especially if it becomes the only option. Its something im not going to gloss over when deciding what to do anyway.

Actually, Im up for most
Actually, Im up for most anything. Luna didn't catch my eye immediately, but I sort of left out a lot of locations off my immediate listings. Is luna decently set up then? I Haven't heard as much about it, But I suppose thats nothing a few quick searches cant fix. As for skilled work, I Don't know much, though it is sounding more and more like something i'm going to work out *before* I leave. Which is fine, since Its going to take me a bit to Farcast anyway.

Luna
Well, the keyword for Luna is conservatism. Loyalties to earth's now gone nations are still very much alive and they are far less accepting of AGIs, Nanotech or TITAN based technology. One of the big problem of Luna is the economy, it is rather static and lacking in growth. Luna is also a poor place to go if you wish to join technological sector, but if media, entertainment or fashion interest you, this is the place you might want to go to.

Anarchist habitats are pretty
Anarchist habitats are pretty variable. It really depends on which habitat you are in. Even here in Twelve Commons we have a lot of different outlooks and societies. The question is what are you looking for? - M
Nerathul Nerathul's picture
Anarchist
Personally, I'm not a fan of Anarchist habitat, I like owning property and having actual security rather than relying largely on the honor system and reputation. Although I guess it's not helped by how many anarchist seem to hate me. Also, Anarchist habs are too isolated for my taste, hence why I prefer living on planets, travel to orbiting habitats are relatively cheap and intraplanetary travel is no problem at all when a change of scenery is needed.

While interesting, I suppose
While interesting, I suppose with anarchists it comes down to investigating the individual locations. It would be a pretty big change of culture, Since I never really had anarchist leanings, though I did have a few anarchist friends, back before the fall. Plus, I think an Anarchist hab would be a little better for someone like me, as far as skills go, though Id have to research the particular place to know what they expect. As for luna, it sounds alright, I suppose, but from what I hear, its less Exciting them some of the other places. Im sure it has an interesting culture of its own, but Unless someone wants to sell me on it, I think I'll focus on other areas. Also, Thank you two so far for Replying. It helps a lot to brainstorm with a bit of help.

Job Offer
***From TransHuman Resources Department: Obsidian Firelance Technologies*** Dear {aRTaggedPreferedSalutation} Unger One of our headhunters has noticed your availability for employment. This is great news for us as we are currently endeavoring in a very large construction project and additional labor is required. We are currently building a very large habitat over Iopetus. Biomorph availability is slim as the medical wing is not complete yet but we have most industrial synthmorphs available. While we would appreciate prior experience in Zero Gravity construction we have no problems with basic training and grooming you from there. This would be a 3 year contract position with with health benefits and back up insurance included. Salary is negotiable but we prefer to use Inner System credits. If we are satisfied at the end of the duration of the contract and you pick up some scientific or engineering skills in that time we may move you onto a permanent position on the R&D Division. Long term benefits of permanency is sponsorship to Titania University, A free morph of your choice (120,000 credit) or lower every 10 years and starting allotment of 4 weeks paid vacation. Please respond if you have any interests, questions or concerns. Agatha Martello, Director, TransHuman Resources

Intrest.
Consider me interested. Like many, Synthmorphs are not necessarily my thing, but Ive been in this one for most of my recent time, so It wont be too hard to sleeve into another. I have little Zero Grav Construction skill however. That being said, the location is interesting. Its not that far from both the inner and outer systems, and the.. History of Iapetus itself is interesting, to say the least. If this offer stays open by the time Im done mulling about my options, I think Its a likely candidate.

@Samuel Unger In reply to your questions: 1. Providing XP is useful to those who would wish to visit that scum ship. So if it does not distract you from other matters, provide XP. 2. If you are willing to undergo advanced training to meet professional requirements, and are willing to accept our ethos, then an Ultimate habitat could be for you. Self-improvement in all facets.

Thank you for your reply.
1. True enough.I'll just throw them out to the mesh when I get a chance, though Im sure there are XP of this place already. 2. Unfortunately, My idea of Self-Improvement isn't too compatible with what I hear of Ultimates.(A Flat or a Splicer is my ideal morph, after all.) And while I have heard a lot of things about the ultimates, I'm sure a lot of what I heard is Baseless rumor. That being said, I do think the Ultimates have a good idea on their hands, and there is nothing wrong with self improvement. I will think about this a bit, but I do think Im not cut out to be an Ultimate, and I'm sure you've seen a fair share of people who weren't.

I can understand the logic of mistrusting technology after the Fall, even if it does not outweigh the benefits of using said technology. I bear you no hostility but there is no virtue in limiting yourself unnecessarily. As a faction, we choose to prioritise our own improvement and survival and some of us would like other transhumans to join. If you do decide to make the attempt, feel free to contact me on Xiphos.

#Mesh Login: Fixer# @OP I can recommend Obsidian Firelance Technologies as employer if you consider them. @Panoptic I know it's rather off topic, but I've yet to get a strait answer from the few Ultimates I've encountered. What are your take on synthetic morph? All Ultimates I've met were wearing meat.

@Nerathul
@Nerathul My own preference is for humanoid biomorphs, particularly the athletic models, and that is a common preference amongst Ultimates. The ability to enhance performance chemically and minimising mesh attack vectors would be reason enough, but I believe that perfection is to be found by building on our biological roots. That said, some Ultimates do regularly wear synthmorphs. Synthmorphs are durable and immune to biological vectors and those have their uses in say gatecrashing or high radiation environments. But with nanophages and medichines, that immunity isn't as much of a boon.

***From Agatha to Samuel Unger*** Do not worry the posting should not be expiring anytime soon. Like I said we anticipate the habitat's construction to take years. Its a brand new design and should be able to conduct large scale industrial manufacture to cutting edge R&D. Don't kid yourself though apart from the TWC we are fairly isolated. It still surprises me how people even from the brink forget how far apart things are spaced out here compared to the inner system. The price for privacy I guess. And yes Iapetus is full of wonders. oh, I didn't mean to imply
oh, I didn't mean to imply that its somehow a hub of activity, more that I can go wherever from it, should I choose not to stay beyond the initial contract. Its a far place, sure, but farcasting from it cant be any worse then where I am currently, I'd hope. plus, distance is relative.. Someone may yet develop cheaper and faster drives for those of us less inclined to farcasting anyway.

Well, I think Ive decided Folks. Sorry for all the Delays and all the indecision. After thinking about it, I think My best shot is This Iapetus Hab. Er
Hope I'm not to late, but don't darkcast. Really, don't darkcast unless the scum seem to be ready to airlock you for not agreeing to swap genders and carry one of their children to term. It ain't worth it, even if you really do want to beam a fork out there to live a happy life. If you're going to be hanging around Saturn, you might want to consider visiting our good friends Les Quebecois on Titan. A surprisingly large amount of 'em, the other Canadians and the Scandinavians (Canadavians?) still have their original bodies, and although most of them have modified themselves quite a bit they've still got untouched human brains. Tend to be the better kind of biocons too in my opinion - they're not going to decide you're not human any more just because you need some modifications to stay viable in an environment you most definately didn't evolve for.

an update for the new message.
Your too late, In the sense I already farcasted an ego, and redefined myself a bit here. My Fork/Ego Gets to be Samuel, Reborn somewhere else he can be himself. I decided not to terminate myself either, and stick around. Problem is, Your even later then that. You see, I am not the original copy, Because the real Sam probably died on earth. Long story short, I was an Infogee who got 'misplaced', so I'm already About as non-original as it gets, hence why I don't care if I do copy myself a couple times until I can settle down, since by this point, I may as well get to somewhere I'm comfortable, before trying to stay true to how I feel. Computer program in a Synthetic body and all.

Speaking as a computer program You might want to consider seeing where your swarm stops off next and just look for work there.

Well now. I feel assish.
Here we are describing ourselves as computer programs, then a real one comes along. Sorry, I was probably being pretty.. Insensitive. Just because we re all sort of programs in diffrent forms doesn't really make me have the same experiences as you. Anyway, Thats one thing im considering, But now that I actually let myself fork, permanantly I assume, Im just going to feel liberated to mess around with whatever I happen to find. I was actually thinking of Collecting flat DNA, as a novelty Biomorph builder, though that would be so incredibly niche, I doubt I would get tons of buisness, But it might be kind of fun.. Especially out here with scum, where I would be the outliers among outliers. "Oh, you want Defective eyes? well, that one was hard to find, nearly died in the fall!"

Meh on the whole 'program in
Meh on the whole 'program in a body' bit. Doesn't bother me. Hell, from some angles, it can look like you are seeing us AGIs as equals. Besides pretty sure you don't have the same experiences as the next Infomorph waiting for a fleshform that I will run into. We all have different lives, after all. You know, you might want to alter your Business model. Start with some generic flat template, and use biosculpting to mod them to what people want, rather than using grow and dissolve cycles. See if you can find the kind of defective liver that would leave the person feeling drunk all the time.

Continued conversation.
Honestly, I do think AGI are equal, though that wasn't the context I was using that idea in, arguably. But you do have a good point about Experiences between even similarly brought-up beings being still far apart. Actually, that is a pretty good idea. I do eventually want to start collecting 'authentic' DNA, but Sculpting is something I am being exposed to more and more around here, so I could stretch some basic DNA pretty far, If I get pretty good at it. Actually, To kickstart things, I might even invent a 'flat' pod of sorts, So I can get going a bit faster, Even if I have to sacrifice 'authenticity' for now. Hmm. I Can see why people like modding morphs so much now, It can be fun to brainstorm this stuff.
