The Nature of Resleeving and Morphs

Another one of my "big list of questions" threads. This time, the topics are resleeving, morphs, and minds (specifically forking and similar things).

1. Can you give us some specifics on resleeving? How long does it take? Does it require a bunch of special equipment, or can you do so with a simple wireless mindlink? If wireless, can it occur as you are dying so that you can keep all of your most recent memories for when you are put in a new body? Is there a maximum range? Could you, theoretically, leave a spare body somewhere and jump from your current one to it to effectively "teleport"?

2. How many minds can occupy a single morph? To be specific, could somebody allow another to occupy their body simultaneously for various reasons, such as they were about to die and needed to escape their body? Can you occupy the same body so you guys could do better teamwork... maybe one effectively acts as the brains while the other is the brawn?

3. Now I know most of the stuff about forking, but there's one niggling detail I don't know. Let's say your old body didn't die, and the mind survived whatever accident triggered your backup to be put in another body. You guys meet each other somewhere, and decide that you don't want to be separate people. Can you merge back together into a single entity? Will there be rules for this?

3a. You only need to answer this one if the answer to the last one was "yes". Can you merge with a completely different mind than your own? Say a character falls in love with someone, and they decide that they want to really be together. Is that another possible merge? Will this work the same as merging with a fork, or will it have different rules?

I wrote this section, so I guess I can field this one... 1. Minutes. There's a piece of gear involved, but it's not that expensive. You can't "teleport" between bodies; resleeving requires a physical connection. 2. Only one can be in control (at least in Core), but you could get a rider module to carry an infomorph friend (or prisoner) with you in your body. 3. Merging when you've been separate minds for a long time is difficult and sanity-wracking. You can do it, but it'll fuck you both up proper. 3a. "The merged lovers? That's just an urban legend, kid." ;)

Thanks for the info. I could have swore I read something about transmitting your mind across distances, but oh well. As for the merging, is there an exact science? How long is the safe length of time? Do I have enough time to put myself in 5 bodies and bang me a different chick with each, then come back and remerge without serious repercussions? :D

You might be thinking of

You might be thinking of "Egocasting". That's the practice of taking your mind and transmitting it to another destination wherin it is downloaded and then resleeved into a morph on hand. Seen as easier, safer, and faster than spacecraft travel. As for the part about requiring physical contact I dunno, I got the impression an ego could be stored and then downloaded into a morph that's connected to the mainframe (would that work guys?).

To clarify on a few points:

To clarify on a few points: uploading from a _biological_ brain takes minutes. Downloading into a new biological brain takes about an hour. Uploading or downloading from a cyberbrain in a pod or synthmorph is a much faster affair, however, because you're essentially an infomorph just riding in control.

It's not an exact science,

It's not an exact science, but anything under a few hours is safe. Go over that and you risk mental stress or memory loss. Go more than a few days and mental stress and memory loss are practically guaranteed. Gamemasters are free to assign other drawbacks of course.
