Crowd-sourcing a Campaign
Hello! I'm currently running an Eclipse Phase game where they players are playing members of the Elysium police force on Mars. I've got a complex plot in the works, but I plan on having quite a few one-session crimes for the players to solve in the meantime. These are the parts of the game I want help with. I've written up a few nuggets (mainly inspired by episodes of law and order altered to fit Eclipse Phase) Please post your own crime ideas below! As much or as little detail as you'd like. I'm fine with the players leaving Mars temporarily on missions, but I want this to be the exception rather then the rule. Thanks

I was thinking that they could investigate the brutal death of a notable Barsoomian agitator, which sets off a bunch of riots and terrorist attacks around Elysium. The actual perpetrator was a friend in the movement who uses the guys death to try and spark a revolution by making a hypercorp look responsible. The victim is found dead with his eyes gouged out and brutally tortured. He is missing his cortical stack and a couple days later an XP of his torture is put up on the Mesh. His backup could even be a big demagogue in provoking the riots and attacks.

Bonus points: His friend in the Movement wasn't actually the perp, he was the fallback patsy set up by Firewall, who had really good reason to believe this guy had info pertinent to an X-Risk and the Sentinel they sent went a little overboard. [e]You want another good one? Here's one straight out of my own game, which only recently left Elysium. (Actually, this was an NPC's reason for being missing, and the PCs had to investigate her absence, but whatever.) After a routine bust for something routine (say, traffic or whatever,) the PC cops find information indicating that neotenic morphs are flowing into the city, in great quantities. This is not a crime, however, when they look at it, all traces seem to vanish. Then they recieve an anonymous tip-off revealing that extremely young indentured egoes (As in, none older than 14, and frequently 10 and 11,) are also flowing into the city, and these events are not unconnected. The implication, of course, is that someone is organizing this to cater to the desires of pedophiles who find that adult egoes in neotenics just aren't authentic. I will point out that very young egoes are not illegal in the PC - the opening story of Gatecrashing has a young man who says he was forced to work for eight years starting from the age of eleven to earn a morph. He is justifiably angry about his childhood having been spent in slavery. There are a few possible outcomes to the investigation that I could suggest for your poor players. 1: A local criminal organization (The Shui Fong (the local Triads) are a good choice, be cause Elysium is notable for its Chinatown,) is behind this, and is setting up this pedo-brothel on their own. Your PCs have the opportunity to do some serious battle with criminals who are (compared to them) well-equipped, well-trained, well-motivated, and semi-legitimized in their activities, but they may also get to call in the SWAT team, however inept they may be. 2: A local criminal organization (see above) is arranging this, but on behalf of The Lotus Club* (p.155, Sunward.) As they get close to organizing a bust, Oversight shows up and raids their offices, ordering them to hand over and burn any information about the investigation and to forget it happens. They get the opportunity to be thoroughly reamed by the system, because protecting the c-Rep scores of Consortium bigwigs is orders of magnitude more important than smacking down on an obvious child prostitution-slavery ring. If they want justice, they're going to have to play coyboy cop and expose this to the media before Oversight can clean it up, and they're probably going to be on the run for their lives afterwards. 3: The impetus behind this venture was someone in the Oaxaca-Maartens family. Maybe that person is arranging this for their own enjoyment, or maybe it's just a strictly business venture. Either way, it turns out that there is absolutely nothing illegal about this by Consortium law or Elysium law, and when and if they try to find a charge to make stick, they're placed on suspended duty and told in no uncertain terms that the Oaxaca-Maartens are absolutely above the local laws, that they haven't broken any Consortium laws (which the PCs, being local cops, are not empowered to enforce in any event,) and if they continue this they're going to find themselves in jail, because "interfering with a business venture of the Oaxaca-Maartens Family" is, in fact, a crime. If they want justice, they're going to have to look outside the law to get it, probably to the Movement, or even Firewall.

*THE LOTUS CLUB
The brainchild of Experia and Fa Jing, the Lotus Club is one of the most talked about organizations among the glitterati. It is a network of exclusive and private areas spread across the inner system. Only the most glamorous hyperelites and metacelebrities are allowed to join, and by invitation only. The attraction of the club is simple: not only is it the most exclusive club in the system, but it caters to any taste. Anything you want, no matter how decadent or perverse, will be provided for you. Individual club locations are extremely well-guarded secret areas within habitats, sometimes hidden within other private clubs, each dedicated to providing certain entertainments. They are recognized by markings only known by members and visible only via AR with the proper codes. Celebrity hunters who have heard of the club search relentlessly to discover these secret hideaways and learn the secret signs and codes, even if they stand no chance of getting in. Needless to say, the potential for blackmail on what activities take place in these clubs is enormous, but the Lotus Club is extremely diligent in upholding its reputation for privacy. In fact, it is known that Oversight has been called in by Lotus on at least three occasions to help protect secrets that might otherwise be damaging to prominent members of the Consortium.

The Ny'kikiin come to town.
Pods have been going missing from the slummier parts of town with an increasing frequency. Normally a missing pod is written off as infugees jumping their contracts but yesterday a group of (number) security pods went missing and the security infomorphs who were jamming them need to be tracked down and questioned. Look up the Ny'kikiin on p. 12 of Zone Stalkers This can be played up as a call of Cthulhu esque alien cult discovery. Going all horror like they did with Pandorum. Or it can be played as a guns vs zombies type session. Or it can be half investigated and then the Oversight Auditor/Ozma MiB team comes in an classifies all of it causing the PCs much anger at juris-my-diction Planetary Consortium crap. Or it can end in a TPK and the next session the PCs are backed up and just don't know about that time their brains were sucked out through a straw and replaced with a re-purposed cyber brain. I haven't had a chance to look at zone stalkers yet.
Parthanon O'Reily had it all. Money, privilege, top of the line augmentations... he was living the dream. So why did he throw himself into traffic? Even stranger, why did he delete his backup and lifelog beforehand? It was definitely him; the authorization codes and brainprint matched up perfectly, and surveillance footage shows nothing untoward, other than a fairly wild glitterati Bacchanal in the days leading up to his final death - if anything, he looks happy. Was it really just a suicide, another ego crushed by the weight of the Void, or is something more sinister going on? SPOILER: Something more sinister is going on. There are several ways that Parthanon could be murdered in this way. Here are some examples: Version 1: After the party, he spent some time in a healing vat to recover. Someone hacked the systems to give him a puppet-sock without his knowledge, and used it to compel him to his death. The codes for his backup were similarly hacked, and the brain-print didn't indicate that he wasn't in control of his body at the time it was taken. The reasons behind the murder can remain a mystery, or lead into another scenario. Version 2: Parthanon was a very disturbed man. The horrors of the fall caused him to develop multiple personality disorder - one a carefree hedonist, the other a self-loathing psychopath. At the last party he was at, whilst completely out of his head on drugs, he decided to Alpha-fork himself, mistakenly thinking that the fork would permanently remain in a blissed-out state. Instead, he gave the Monsters of the Id independent agency. After that, see version 1. Version 3: At the bacchanal there was a member of the Lost, who let her nature slip to Parthanon and some others, and decided to put the thumbscrews to their prefrontal cortices to conceal her identity. They may have gone a bit too far. In any case, it's just a matter of time until the next ego is lost forever... Version 4: When they said Parthanon had top of the line augmentations, it wasn't a joke. He has contacts in several hypercorps who get him experimental or restricted equipment. It turns out that the latest from Cognite has few side effects...

I'd also like to ask for some ideas. I've toyed with the idea of a campaign where the players are hunted by Firewall, inspired by the first line Handsome Jack says in Borderlands 2. "It's cute that y'all think you're the heroes in this story, but you're not." The idea being, an antagonist where that is the case. Where the protagonists may not be evil, but their continued existence makes things difficult for the true heroes. However, I'm having trouble thinking of what that reason would be. So far the only one I can think of is being in a hab that needs to be nuked from orbit. Any ideas?

The “Battle-Damage Gandhi”, originally the support cruiser “Reciprocal of One”, was instrumental to the Swarm surviving the Fall, when it interposed itself between the fleeing barges and a trio of destroyers who opened fire on them, fearing infection. The swarm escaped with minimal damage, yet all hands were lost on the Reciprocal as plasma fire vented the atmosphere and destroyed the servers housing infomorph crewmembers. It has since been lovingly refurbished with the latest logistics hardware, and serves as the swarms Farcaster hub and largest infomorph habitat. Something is wrong. Over the past few days, the power grid has becoming unstable, with spikes and losses occurring in seemingly isolated areas. More worryingly, The onboard mesh – long since replaced and refurbished – is suffering from odd distortions – mesh IDs are appearing that don't correspond to users or devices, existing devices are receiving nonsensical commands. Even worse, infomorphs on the local network seem to be suffering from amnesia, engaging in activities and conversations, yet having no knowledge of them afterwards. Fearing damage or viral infection (despite InfoSec experts not finding anything), the ship has been quarantined, but the ship's loss would be a devastating blow to the swarm moral and logistics. Something must be done. ... The Reciprocal was a very special ship. Whilst it's systems were largely standard for it's type, it had an secondary mesh loaded with a system named “Shield-Rose” concealed within it's structure to monitor the primary mesh for subversion. Should any occur, it was equipped with microbots that could physically isolate and alter infected servers, with software to analyze and counteract the infection. The system was so advanced it even saw some success against the Exsurgent virus, as it could analyse the virus without risking infection, and disseminate a counteragent to the primary mesh. It was, quite literally, an electronic immune system. The problem is, it too was damaged during the the Reciprocal's self-sacrifice, to the point of destruction. It has been slowly rebuilding itself ever since, and it has finally started to come back online – only to find the primary mesh swamped with unknown egos, software and enhanced technology. Inundated with confusing information, Shield-Rose has started it's analysis. It has been manipulating the power grid to aid it's reconstruction and manipulate the primary's servers, has been inserting software probes to gather information, and has been removing servers from circulation, creating software agents to imitate the contained egos whilst it does it's work. The level of complexity that Shield-Rose has achieved in doing this has has resulted in a system that is poised on the brink of attaining consciousness. When that occurs, there are two possibilities. Either it will complete it's work, releasing an “antiviral” into the mesh which will purge it of all foreign software – including every ego and backup currently stored – or it will realize that they are legitimate passengers, and stand down. Which occurs depends on the tone of the campaign. ... It's time for the tri-monthly Swarm Drugball-Tourney! For 7 days, 4 teams will be sealed on one of the barges, armed only with their bare hands, their wits, and sniper rifles equipped to fire splash rounds loaded with the latest finest narcotics developed by our in-house drug-smiths. The first team to take the bridge, or to have the least members gently floating through the corridors tripping balls at the end of the week, wins our eternal adulation! (Warning; adulation may not be eternal) This time, our teams are “The Three French Hens”, “The Maximized Facepunch Assembly”, our current champions “The Fluffy Bunny Slippers”, and finally, replacing the aptly named “Team Not Appearing In This Campaign”, who had to withdraw due to a sudden case of auto-erotic decompression, completely new to the sport, “The Player Characters”! What could possibly go wrong? Spoilers: Everything. Everything will go wrong.

Urg, difficult. For these scenarios to work well, you need to base them on your specific characters, otherwise they tend to fizzle. You need to decide if you want the reason for the conflict to be the whole team, or just one member. After that, you need to decide why there's any conflict – if one firewall team needs to nuke a hab, it's more than likely that any other teams would agree. Usually, it's going to be either something that the team/individual possesses, knows or is that'll cause the scenario. If you have an async PC, you could have a TITAN vessel locked onto his psychic signature. The other firewall team is attempting to permanently kill that member (maybe have them already have corrupted their backups), so that the vessel will stop tracking – if the don't, it'll destroy any the PCs, and the entire hab their in. Another would be having the other team try to release a exhuman-created transgenic monstrosities to provide faux justification for destroying a martian town because there is a TITAN dreadnought powering up beneath it, or a lab analysing exoplanet tech there. I realize neither of these ideas are great, but there's not much that can be done without knowing more about the team.

Well, the idea is they wouldn't be Firewall operatives. They'd be bystanders who happen to be collateral damage. To them, Firewall should appear to be an evil organization, and the fact that OpSec often means they cannot justify their actions lends themselves to that. Basically, Firewall would still be the good guys, but due to secrets and obfuscation, the players would only see the necessary evils. The plan would be, Firewall hurts the PCs, PCs retaliate, Firewall decides they've had it up to here with these wannabe heroes and tries to deal with them before they disrupt something important.

Shield-Rose, a mil-tech anti-infection AI/system that is woefully uninformed about the new Transhuman future, threatening a system's mesh and all of its digital inhabitants, is great, I may need to borrow that for my own scenarios! Thanks, ThatWhichNeverWas! On topic, if unable to think of a decent scenario, I try to remember that not all scenarios need to be Firewall operations, and the Sentinels could be like Shadowrunners. In your case, as Elysium police, they could be tasked with tracking zone artifacts that are showing up in the underworld of the city. Pretty much any police or vice cops esque show could have decent hooks. Maybe the glitterati are using a new drug or PETAL that derives its base technology in recovered TITAN tech from the Zone, and the player characters have to track the source of this drug to the zone stalkers who have released an infectious vector on the elite of the city? Elysium seemed a sort of Hollywood/Vegas sort of place, so any CSI episodes could be tailored to the setting, I would imagine.
Exhuman, and Humanitarian.

Asfar as CSI, that was my first thought, but it's actually harder then you think. 9/10 episodes are basically invalidated by the setting. The ones that survive don't have much similarity to their source content.

Your memories of the event may be altered to prevent the the release of proprietary knowledge. Do not taunt the happy fun ball... [End Message] Sounds like a nice time! Pity that the creator of Cleisthenes, Illia von Barstow, is actually an exhuman TITAN worshipper. Cleisthenes is a marvellous system, which uses exogenetics to enhance the social components of the brain (+5 Savvy, +5 to skill/aptitude checks involving social situations or law)... but has the unfortunate (and to everyone but Illia unknown) side effect of linking the wearers into a hive mentality when exposed to a specific chemical, which Illia can secrete with her Tailored Pheromones implant. Those effected become absolutely devoted to the hive, and the queen above all, obeying every order given without question. Firewall has become aware that Illia isn't exactly kosher, and has sent a team to infiltrate the event and find out what's going on. First they'll try and kill the player characters and assume their identities, and when that causes too many problems they'll take those of other guests... which may cause [s]wacky hijinks[/s] problems [s]when[/s] if the PCs recognize them on the station. If you want it to go faster, just skip them going after the PCs.
