Your morph and why
"Spike, take a letter." {MUSE RECORDING} Just thought I'd pop this question out to the Mesh. What is your morph and why did you choose it? Do you identify with it as "your body" or just as a vehicle to perform activities in? Now I understand not all of us are sleeved into the morph's of our choices, by whatever the outside circumstance. Let's not have this devolve into squabbling over politics and such though. If that's the case for you, what morph would you rather be and why? {RECORDING ENDS} Source - Extropia Timestamp - 11AF Poster: August Leonid

I've had basically the same
I've had basically the same morph for the past ten years; Ruster, Male, Arabian phenotypes. I got my first when I emigrated from Earth to Mars, and bioscupting was done to make the new me be pretty much like the old, minus the red skin - to ease the transition. It was my first time resleeving. My original body was sold, but I kept enough DNA to hopefully grow a clone some day - though it was, of course, lost. I managed to hang on to it for a while. I survived being shot at by missiles and lasers by radicals and fundies pre-Fall, being nearly nuked during the Fall, and then five years of being shot at by TITAN menaces, criminals, and mercs in by official and unofficial jobs. Then in 5AF some bastard shot me through the torso and head with a heavy railgun. I've resleeved three times since then. All the same basic plan, plus some minor body sculpting to make it look decent, and some mods to make them - competitive. It's functional, it suits me. This specific body isn't "my body" to me, but the self-image and capabilities are. The physical part of me is still me, even if I'm not attached to some particular instance of that physical part. If I wasn't like this - if my skin wasn't red, if I wasn't male, if I couldn't survive a walk outside, if I couldn't think fast enough to skim a jet a decimeter off the ground - I would not be the person I am.

I have the worst luck. I'm typing this from a Fury, and I have the worst luck. Naui bulhaeng eun sangdaejeog-ida. You really want an explanation? Okay, this morph was looted off of an Ambelina. Yes, as in Claudia Ambelina, Pax Familiae. She was interested in me and my buddies, considered us a "rinky dink" band of pirates (Which we are not. We are legit reclaimers). Wanted to buy us out and take our secret route to Earth. Thought she'd infiltrate the group with the best agent she could afford, which was herself, duh. I caught her all right. She's not that hard to notice, barely masked her personality at all. There was nothing elegant about the fight we had, we just drew our guns at each other at point blank and fired until we had a double knockout. Well, okay, the pilot might have finished her off with his giant fuck-off rifle, which I'm sure he sleeps with. Except no, he sleeps with me. He had a thing for not-Ambelina, but now all he has is her morph. You see where this is going. Silpeu naega jonglyuui salam-ida un ida. I'm going to get some odd looks for this but...
... I use an Ayah morph with a few customizations of my own. I was sleeved in an Ayah as part of my pre-fall duties and I got used to some of their niceties. I hated them at the time, of course, but now that I have control over my life I can see how useful they really are. Seriously, give 'em a try. Well, not if you're in the inner system. - M.

If you don't like your lot in life as a fury, why not get a cheap synthmorph or work for another splicer? I mean, what you're going through sounds uncomfortably close to rape.

My morph
I just realized I neglected to post my own morph here! Silly me. Well after leaving the Junta, which wasn't easy by the way, a friend of my permanently deceased father offered to make me a biomorph if I was willing to wait. The good doctor gave me a simulspace to live in and plenty of practice dummies. It was here that my passion for the martial arts had been renewed, by the time he was done I had sleeved into an Olympian body. The doctor had taken notice of my interest and created a body that would cater to that. Later, as I made some more money and garnered more of a rep, I had some biosculpting done to give myself leonine traits. Eyes, mane, tail, the works.

Rather sensitive topic, isn't it? One side of the events I describe sounds like the pilot has me trapped. The truth is, there was a reason Ambelina wanted me dead. This lady, she had declared me a snitch for what I was doing… the man I am with has traits that might be dangerous if he is passed into the wrong hands. Before I was his lover, I was his co-worker, and I began to notice him performing stunts that should be impossible; moving at near-infomorph speeds in a stock morph, dropping into trances that gave him monomaniacal clarity. You know what this means if you have seen it before. I cared about him as a friend, and I know that if I do not follow him he may be… experimented on. Whatever happened to him has disconnected him from reality, and I may be feeding that delusion, but it is the task I chose when I joined. Defending all of humanity is the duty I took when I joined my work force. You know which one, brother.

Maybe I'm just ignorant of AGI life, but I would offer some advice of trying not to execute your sorrows away. You should rejoice that you had such friends to begin with, your wings a constant reminder of their love for you. (If AGI can scrub narc-addiction from your codes, please disregard. ^_^')

Very well...
... Ayah morphs are typically used for child care duties. Do you know those designer nannies some hyper-elites like to keep around? Typically those are Ayah morphs. My employers found it distasteful to house an AGI in a biomorph but synths didn't quite have the emotive qualities they were looking for so they compromised. They're surprisingly durable and come with useful features off the shelf. They carry oxygen reserves, can tolerate temperature extremes, and have these great multitools that pop out of your wrist. Those designer nannies are also bodyguards for their charges and the morph is amusingly easy to modify for more dangerous roles. Not that I would know anything about that. - M.

What I consider "my body"
I miss my original shell. However, a six-meter combat wasp optimized for high-gee space maneuvers doesn't fit into most transhuman habitats. Plus, people get really twitchy when they learn you have a bellyful of antimatter. Come on, we're all backed up. Also, the Titanian Navy wouldn't let me keep one, after I got forked off into Firewall. I've tried a couple other morphs, but I've found I'm passably comfortable in Kites. Used to have to mod them up with some decent hardpoints, but now you can get those new Fighting Kites. You know, the ones by Rebisz Concepts. Amazing little morphs, really. I've actually gotten quite fond of flying in atmospheres, provided you have enough space to stretch your wings.

Well, they're watching you right now, and they'll always be with you. I sort of . . . hid during the Fall. Looking back on it, it's not something I'm proud of. I can certainly agree with those sentiments. While to a certain extent I can draw a clear demarcation between personality matrix and software utilities, I've been inhabiting essentially the same custom infomorph since I was compiled; making changes here and there but essentially keeping the same function-set throughout my existence. It has the obvious advantage of portability if I have to 'cast across the system; unlike my coworkers I never have to play body-bank roulette. And I suppose there's a degree of emotional comfort in the constancy of always being yourself in whichever strange hab I'm working in this month. Would I still be 'me' without my Oracles and other software augmentations? Certainly; but I wouldn't be the 'me' I'm used to being.

Believe it or not my lady, but I think I can see where you two are coming from. As comfortable I am with the function of resleeving, I would try to avoid it unless the morph waiting for me is an exact clone of mine. My Olympian body was a gift, and I got it at bad time during my life. It's faculties, augs, and specific kinks are just as much a part of me as my memories and learned skill set. Could I resleeve into another morph and still comfortably function? Sure! (I even happen to enjoy synthmorphs quite a lot.) But I would always have that sort of nagging disassociation that my current shape is a temporary one and that my true form and expression of myself as a person is elsewhere.

I did what I did so others could have the luxury of hiding. So don't feel bad, your successful hiding proves it was worth it. Besides, the main reason I function now is months of work by my devs to undo the psychological trauma I had from then. Meaning my devs were better men (and women) than both of us put together.

Hey! Another ex-Junta! We're a rare bunch these days (especially out in Locus where I live). Name's Raymond Knox, used to work in the Jovian defense force, but I got tired of watching central command manipulate people's good sense and down to earth values into paranoia, suspicion, and bigotry. Out here most people don't realize that the average Jovian is just good-hearted regular guy, and I'd love to sit down and share some stories with you some time. To answer your question, well I use a lot of morphs (though most of them are eidolons). I work security over here in Locus, which is usually pretty boring. Most of the time it's just the damn trolls from PC or some gerontocrats kid come to "prove" Locus doesn't work by sabotaging or outright stealing our public CMs. Last things those damn kids expect to meet is a grizzled old man with Jovian discipline and training defending the anarchist way of life, but people have a lot of funny ideas about what goes in in Anarchists habs, and I don't want to turn this into one of those threads. For my biomorph I go with a Sylph - yeah, yeah yuck it up, but it's not like you think. In an Anarchist hab you've got to work with a lot of different kinds of people, and if you can't or you try to enforce your "norms" on the next guy, your gonna be the one who's hurting. That said, having a lot of people like you helps no matter what your profession is. Lotta anarchists deny that, but it's true. (it's just not as devastating as some people claim). So when I'm investigating, a Sylph helps me to get people to open up and talk. I also use dragonflies and swarmanoids when I need to gather information or go some place where I'm not invited. There's not central hierarchy backing me up, so I can't get a search warrant. That means if I think someone's doing WMD research, I have to form up a team (usually only two or three unique egos but for some jobs we have to fork, a lot). Sometimes it's nothing, which is always awkward, but publicly posting our case files keeps our rep from completely tanking, and we're usually obliged to scrub our memories on the rare occasion we saw something truly private. When I'm really having trouble putting the pieces together, I'll borrow a Savant, which usually helps. My original splicer was put in stasis and launched in the general direction of Mars before I left. It'll be in Jovian space for the next 20 or 30 years, but you bet your ass I plan to snatch that thing at the first opportunity (assuming it doesn't get confiscated, but if I didn't have Guanxi friends in the Junta I never would have made it out in the first place - I'm trusting them to keep my morph under the radar) I get that thing back, and I'll throw a goddamn party. (Not like the shit you see on the scum barges though- yugh) Anyway, that ran a little long, but it's been a while since I've gotten to talk to an honest to goodness Junta like myself. If you're ever on Locus, look me up.
The end really is coming. What comes after that is anyone's guess.

I earned my shell...
I have a professional profile to maintain, so there's some omissions here. That and being on Luna makes me paranoid. I'm aware I can speak freely, being an extropian server and all, but all it takes is for someone paying attention at the right time to ruin your day. That and any references to 'home' are well sought after. So being an infomorph when it all went down is one thing, the length I took to last down there for 4 years were another. But fortune smiled on me and there was a working sleeving facility compete with functioning mesh. Good news is, I wasn't infected with anything bad. Bad news is, I think the virus I found in there left some scars. Because I quickly developed an addiction to forking. I was a psychologists... Assistant... emphasis on the A and maybe a second vowel in there. Point is, I know enough to know what happened to me and that's why I'm a lucky little bitch. In that sleeving facility was some flats (awesome), half a slitheroid and pieces of what used to be pods. Let me tell you, the skills I learned in that facility trying to build a morph from pieces of pod and slitheroid is what's making me money today. Thank you reclaimers! So yeah, I pulled an amberlina down there with scavenged pieces of morph and that amazing ego bridge which probably saved my arse. Lots of practice. Pity bad things happened to the forks though, sometimes I realise how easy I could have been the one who suffered those fates. Fast forward to today and I actually have my own little company designing 'alternative' morphs because fuck Luna, seriously. These people need to get the stick out their arse before it punctures something. My own morph, which I also sell on special order, (hint, hint guys) is a throwback to what I got comfortable with back 'home'. Basically a slitheroid with a pleasure pod wrapped around the top half. Technically it was a worker pod downstairs but I'm allowed to feel pretty like a real lady can't I? Excuse me, one of my forks is scalding me for the last sentence. Apparently that's not what pleasure pods are for...? (They're all in Spheres by the way, they orbit around me little little moons.) Lots of brain augments to accommodate the forks now we're on that topic, puppet sock is linked to the ghost rider module and I have a multiple personality implant. Yes they hijack me from time to time, but these are... Old friends when we moved away from 'home' so I trust them implicitly, especially after we watched another friend go crazy and set water on fire. So yeah... Anyway, that reminds me, I'm looking at expanding business to the extropians (and the autonomists if they give enough rep pings), anyone interested in unusual morphs that may or may not be based on Classical Greek mythology and feudal Japanese folklore?

I actually have a dozen or so infugees in dead storage on my ship in need of a fresh start. Poor souls were trapped by the Nine Lives before my crew and I got them out. Trust me, they aren't picky. I also have a friend in Skinthetic I could put you in contact with, and they're always looking for unconventional morph designs. On a side note, I totally agree with you on the Luna thing. I may be an Olympian, but one's body is their business and they should be free to choose how that manifests; be it flesh or steel. Also, I kind of see the attraction of synthmoprhs, the smooth chrome, the immunities from the environment, how easily customizable they are. Spent some time actually on Luna as a Slitheroid doing bodyguard work for a lovely little shell. Ran into some of your "sticks" as it were and introduced them to my own! . . . . I was armed with a staff!

If I can still be my own
If I can still be my own company but do a deal with Skinthetic for their distribution network, that could work very nicely... As for the slitheroid, it saved my life, that's the major thing here. Still, it's amazing how little of an actual synth you need for things to stay working...

I find there's no morph I
I find there's no morph I like more than the scurrier. Sure, it's a pod, which means regular maintenance and prejudice, and based on alien biology, which means needing to be careful what I consume. Everything else about it is awesome. I'm cute and fuzzy, which comes in handy in my line of work. Wait, that came out wrong... I mean that appearing like I'm not a threat helps keep me safe. Being able to run through passages too small for most morphs and glide through the air are my other safety nets. Lastly, having an extra pair of hands is always... handy. I've spent a fair bit of time in other morphs. Egocasting to areas without scurriers available, venturing to places where pods are illegal, things like that. I always feel naked in other morphs, which is probably odd to say considering scurriers are clothing optional in most places. I feel too large, too noticeable, and a little too cold. Even when I'm back to the human form I was born as. In 15 years I will have been a scurrier as long as I was human. I wonder sometimes if I can still call myself "human", or if I've shed the right to that title long ago.
Steel Accord Steel Accord's picture
"Human"
I think the same could be said for a lot of us. There's a reason the population is referred to as transhumanity after all. I admit, I would love to experiment with going even further. Maybe even to the degree some exhumans enjoy, but this morph was made by a good friend and much like yourself, I'll soon have been living in this form longer than the one I was born in. While I may still be of nominally human shape, my leonine body sculpting has distanced me somewhat from the genotype . . . and gotten me a few drink offers from furries. Hey! I've got a fractal stuck in my paw, think you could help me with that? XD

This morph is more flying
This morph is more flying squirrel than mouse, but sure! And yeah, furries. The other advantage to being a scurrier. More fun to bring home than furies in general. On a side note, it's important to double check the spelling on any mesh postings you make.

I tend to stay in a nicely tricked-out octo that I've had since I got out of a research zoo in the Inner. Worked wonders in helping me make it out; it's got some inbuilt armoring and some speed tricks, oxygen reserve and sealing, with grip pads for added security. It tends to startle people when they want to come see me that they have to go outside the ship to find my blister - I chill in a little hydro-dome in the middle of the synths on the hull. Given that I'm an octo-uplift, the body is something I would seriously miss if it got lost or ruined. I suppose I could get someone to trick out a takko for me, since the builders on board like my rep, but something about cyberbrains makes me feel claustrophobic - no offense to those who run their minds on them. thebluespectre's pal probably would have the same twitch, y'know? I've sleeved in non-octo bodies, but humanoid forms just feel weird what with all the time I've spent like this.

Memories and Utility
I live in a slightly radioactive crab. Back when I was human, I worked on an independent freighter. During the fall we made the stupid decision to deliver some cargo to a hab at the Earth-Moon L5. Shut up, this was before there was much shooting off planet. Anyway, we used this big old novacrab pod to shift stuff around in vacuum. I was cocooned down in the drive section of my ship, trying to get some kit installed on the hull of the hab via remote when somebody back home decided that L5 was just too damn crowded. I still don't know who shot it, and I don't know who they thought they were killing. I got a front row seat as my ship and body got nuked. I remember it, so I must have survived the hull splitting, but things get fuzzy pretty quick. Radiation poisoning, I think. An AGI friend on the hab managed to take over the crab and go hunting through the wreck for my stack. I can't believe he actually found it, even if the engines mostly survived. Then he stuck me in the only body he had on hand. We salvaged a few more stacks from the wreck, but nobody asked for the crab back, and it's too useful to give up. We probably wouldn't have made it away from the L5 if we hadn't had it. I've also got a couple millipede drones that I can jam for detail work. Two meter pincers are great when you're cutting hull metal back, but they're less useful when you're trying to repair a drive coil.

Menton
My morph is a menton. Without the intelligence boost the menton or similar morphs (I'll generally ask for a Savant to be fabbed if a menton isn't available wherever I'm egocasting) provide I just feel like a goddamn moron now. I mean I know I'm reasonably intelligent without one; I got my PhD in a flat back when a flat was called a "normal person". But I'm just used to it now and I can't go back. I spent 2 days sleeved in a hyperbright once, I had to tear myself away before that became the new normal too. I intend to wait until some of the kinks are worked out and there's synthetic alternative that gives the same boost so I can print out a new body that doesn't make me feel like a idiot in 6 hours if necessary. As for whether my morph is a body or a shell/vehicle - I tend to think of it as a home. I'll happily leave it for a day or a week and fly around the solar system but eventually I want to come back home. And maybe I'll replace it eventually but it's certainly not something I'd do lightly.

I'll check the mirror for you. Looks the same as yesterday for what that's worth. Tall girl, early twenties, slightly horsey nordic face framed in silver hair. Scar on my cheek from a very close encounter with a knife of a former friend. An exalt, no, the variant... you know the one, it's on the tip of your tongue. That's if this is real and if the headhunters didn't take us all. How do you prove that you're not an eidolon. Is this real or are we in the mind of a TITAN?

Custom elegance
For as long as I can remember I've been a custom dracomorph my muse tells me is incredibly expensive. Less than a dozen variants from the run exist. This is very much my body, I honestly can't recall being anything but the head turning creature I am today. I've also been told I couldn't resleeve even if I chose to, some kind of safeguards prevent it. Not that I'd choose to, or my owner would allow such a thing anyway. I have services to provide and XPs to create. I suppose the closest approximation of me would be a Sylph, but I have training, modifications, and a certain limberness you'd be more likely to find on a pleasure pod. The better to serve my various wealthy clients.

*Morph?* On Xiphos, a Remade with additional customisation. Elsewhere, Remade or Olympians preferably. Originally? An early version of the splicer, when it was still known as "being genefixed". *Why?* The Remade is the current peak of biomorph design. The Olympian is a solidly athletic model. *Identity?* I held onto my original body for some years, even after my escape from Earth through the strength of others. But then I understood. It was just one more fetter holding me back and keeping me weak. A morph is only a shell with which I interact with the wider world. *Desire?* There will be successors to the current models. I shall choose the finest.

Wow, a lot of inhuman morphs in here. I thought that went out of style over ten years ago? Are the morphological fashion trends shifting back two decades as pre-Fall nostalgia kicks in? Nevermind. I tend to prefer Fury and Crasher morphs. The way they move, the way they feel, it's ecstasy. I especially love them when I was operating on exoplanets. I know they say to not use biomorphs when you're going gatecrashing, but I can't help it. Neurachem pumping through my veins, an MRDR capsule in between my gum and cheek waiting to be popped, squeezing the forearm and grip of my Direct Action SS-ExB laser rifle. And then you see where you're going and you feel sick with anxiety. So sick, I've often vomited into my mask on my LSS. That smell, it never leaves, and it gets stuck in your nostrils for days. And you're left there with your group, quivering slightly with fear, sweat, and sweet sweet epinepherine. It truly is ecstasy. If you ever get a chance to gatecrash, do it in a biomorph. It is an experience like none other. So yes, I guess I say I do identify with my morph. I wouldn't take another.

@Katya Inhuman morphs offer certain situational advantages. But a humanoid form still offers a more useful rounded set of abilities, especially the athleticism focused models. I have sampled Furies but I find the Remade and Olympian superior in their overall performance. That said, I am curious about the "Crasher". Have you used one in a solar habitat and if so, how was the experience?

@ Seyit
@ Seyit Yeah, sure... or... wait, I can't seem to remember if I've ever been to Mercury or Sol before. That's odd. Ah, no matter. I sell them on the rare occasion. I know they say that they're upgraded Rusters, but, in all actuality, they share a ton of internals with furies. They're basically furies with slightly slower reflexes, but they can soak up a hell of a lot of abuse! That is, of course, unless you get a few modifications done to them, then they can be just as fast and, in my opinion, more useful in a broader set of situations than a Fury with fewer times spent in a medimachine vat. But most people who purchase Crashers can barely afford to buy modifications to get them up to true combat spec. And why would you want to? They're expensive! A lot of customers just want them because they can wander around on the outdoor terraces on the Venus floating habitats for extended periods without needing to wear a mask! Just between you and me, I'd rather get a Crasher morph if I thought I might have a chance of being spaced or outside in unbreathable atmosphere for extended periods. At least then, I can be fashionable; and if something goes wrong, I can always start throwing clothing in the opposite direction of where I need to go. No need for your morph insurance and back up insurance rates to go up, non? Here are my complaints. One. They are expensive. Like, you probably can't afford one expensive. I'm talking about 70,000cr for a brand new one. And there is a wait list for these things. If you have that much cash just lying around, or can get a loan, all the more power to you. But good luck finding an employer who will pay that much to give you a body. You might be able to find a used one, but those are rare and probably harder to get a hold of than new ones! Most users of these bodies tend to meet rather unfortunate ends, from my understanding. Two, breathing in them feels a bit weird, and it takes a while to get used to. It feels sorta like you ate a bit too much. I dunno, I could never get over that sensation of there being something wrong with my chest; and I found that I would often forget to breath and just stop for long periods. It's rather unnerving. Friends have said I looked almost dead. However, despite these things, you will be hard pressed to find a morph with all the same features for less than getting some splicer morph and modifying it. Even then, I'm sure a new Crasher would be less expensive than a used splicer body modified to be at the same specs; and they outperform your Olympians at what they do. I mean, I'd be willing to modify what you have to be like them, but... ...wait, why am I talking shop? You're never going to buy one of these things. I sincerely doubt someone like you could afford one, you're asking too many questions. Sorry, I love organic bodies.

@Katya Your view is enlightening. And I certainly appreciate a preference for organic bodies. Synthmorphs, while durable, are simply too vulnerable in other respects. As for funding, several parties on Extropia and in the inner system offer credit for reliable, skilled talent.

Fixer's Gargoyle
{Fixer Logging in} While not as fashionable as a biomorph, I've come to enjoy gargoyles very much. It takes a while to get used to the new perception and the 360° vision they advertise is fairly misleading as it covers all angles, not just the horizontal one. The only place I can't actually see is directly under my feet. I had it modified to better fit my recent activities; grip-pads, reinforced frames, ionic propulsion, chameleon casing and a rework on the joints to make them more flexible and allow positions not normally possible. I also used some other morph while working, industrial espionage calls for a lot of different type of infiltration. I used pleasure pods, swarmoids and even a modified Servitor that I swapped with a damaged servant bot when it was at the workshop, you'd be surprise how many people never look twice at what their household minions are doing. I have a preference for synthmorph due to the ease you can switch between them and their durability. While they can be hacked, that's never been a problem for me, I keep a ghost riding fork to work on infosec when I'm too busy. The one time someone managed to hack me, I just popped an EMP grenade, cut off the signal right out. As for my original body (a ruster) I have no clue what happened to it, I woke up in a resleeving facility in Olympus with a few months long gap in memory and I was told the fall happened. Story of my life really, I still have a four year gap of my Solaris indenture.

I'm currently sleeved in a modified Savant myself. I tend to use it as a sort of sketchpad for my latest designs, so the bodysculpting tends to change fairly frequently as I test out new ideas. It's a bit of a mishmash of conflicting themes and partial designs on the whole, which I suppose has it's own charm. Right now I've got a miniature ecosystem that I'm cultivating out of the bodywork, had to rework the entire thing to get it set up properly but it should look good once I get the miniature waterfall working (which is a challenge here on Ilmarinen, believe you me). Incidentally, to the sophont who also mentioned a preference for Savants, I'm glad to hear you like them. I was involved with the team responsible for the original design. We are working on the next generation to match the Hyperbright... but the Hyperbright itself still has some serious bugs to work out before we're likely to get anywhere close to a stable neural architecture for a synth version. I'd seriously advise against sleeving in one of those things long term, early adopters do sometimes get burned. I vastly prefer synthmorphs to anything bio - biological necessities are something I had to put up with for longer than you kids have been alive and you better believe I'm glad to no longer have to deal with them. They're also a much better canvas and I tend to resleeve often enough that biomorphs would be far too much of a hassle. Pods are also workable in a pinch, or if I'm looking for something cheap to mod for more dangerous work. Basic pods, and the decent models of case or synth, are so comparatively cheap that even with the mods it takes to get them up to standard they're still cheaper than most other morphs. You can't can't push them to the same heights as a properly customised high-end morph, like my Savant, but that's a lot of resources to burn if you catch a bullet the wrong way. There's an Eidolon I keep handy for when going infomorph is convenient (I'd much rather do that than have to sleeve into a biomorph). Unlike the budget morphs I tend to sleeve when working, an Eidolon can be safely customised for much higher specs without having to worry about loosing it. Perfect for jobs where I'm not likely to be needed for anything physical. Even if something does happen and your infomorph self bites it, say because the buddy you were ghost riding with caught a missile to the face, you're not at risk of loosing all the resources you invested in the Eidolon so long as you were sensible enough to back it up somewhere. I do prefer being able to work with my hands, which keeps me from going infomorph full time, but I can certainly appreciate the convenience. As to whether I consider my morph part of my identity? No, no I do not. A morph is a tool, nothing more. You customise it, you grow attached to it, you become accustomed to using it, but ultimately I would still be I no matter what sleeve I'm wearing.
Lorsa Lorsa's picture
It's in the name; morph
I change morph more often than I change my name and considering how often that happens it's pretty impressive. Right now where I live I'm mostly known as "Ira" which is great because it doesn't seem to confuse people much regardless of which sex I am at the moment. Not that the scum are easily confused, but we do trade with others are all. Why this is so? That's both a long and short story at the same time, and one that I will be happy to tell you! I lost my morph in the Fall, you know the thing that happened a while back where lots of people got killed and whatnot. Not that it was my original morph mind you, I got rid of it a long time ago. Upgraded to a better one. This was back on Earth, when morph swapping was still kind of rare. Since then I've changed morphs a bit depending on the job requirments and I've found that I'm equally happy being a man or a woman. In fact, if I am one too long I tend to get bored. I guess gender have always been a bit of a fluid thing for me. Aaaanyway, I got lucky and managed to ego-cast away to TITAN. I heard they had a sweet gig going where they'd offer a morph for everyone. Since I was orignally from Sweden I figured I'd fit right in as well. Too bad "one body" could just as well mean a synthetic morph (I HATE synths) and that I realized rather quickly why I moved away from that cold, overly "nice" and political correct place to begin with. Only scandinavians can move from the coldest place on Earth out to an icemoon and decide that instead of staying within a nice comfy dome they're going to make a morph that can survive the cold. You might survive it but it still feels FUCKING COLD! So I decided to ditch them and their stupid civic duty in favor of a crowd with a way of life much closer to my own values; the scum. Lucky for me, the scum are an easygoing bunch and it's quite easy to borrow morphs there temporarily. As long as you don't mind switching a bit now and then and spend a day or two as infomorph you can get along quite fine without a morph of your own. Since I quite early on made sure to rid myself of defining me by my name (made lying easier), it was a small step to stop defining myself according to my body. To be honest, I enjoy swapping morphs often. If I don't I tend to get a bit anxious or irritated. Every morph comes with a special feeling to it, and adapting myself in order to fit it means that I grow as a person. For every new body I become something new, something larger than I was before. Or so I think anyway. Some people think I'm a bit on the crazy side but most are quite accomodating and let me borrow their morphs when they don't need them. I really try avoid synthmorphs though. They make my skin itch. Or surface. Whatever.

I suspect it's just selection bias. People who just sleeve in a splicer or whatever probably aren't going to be interested in a discussion about morph choice. People who specifically go into a thread to talk about their morph choices are more likely to use alternative, non-standard morphs.

Nothing special
A fascinating topic. Ive always found other transhuman opinions on morphs interesting, since Im sort of behind the times and I know it. Anyway, On the subject. I'm currently inhabiting a Case, when a Splicer or Flat is more my style. Nothing fancy or particularly good, I just got a cheap, used, and fairly standard case, aside from the synthetic mask mod, which is a nice addition. Being old fashioned, I see it as me, but I do struggle from time to time still, expecting to see my old pre-fall face. As for my ideal Morph, It would probably be a flat. Technically, a splicer would do just as well, but it still feels like cheating, since Im going for an 'authentic' experience like my old Body. But I get the feeling I would start getting more and more mods down the line to try and keep up with all the fancy morphs these days, which would be ok by me, so long as I 'started' from the bottom.
During the fall, humanity received a grim reminder, We lived in fear of the T.I.T.A.N.S and were disgraced to live in these cages we called Habitats.

Bouncer prehensile feet, which mean I take a walker frame on long trips to cut down on toe and ankle strain, but I find it's worth it - I'm in less than 0.5g more often than not. Why? Because I'm based at Portal, and I hope to be prepared to go anywhere life takes me. I used to sleeve a liquid steel morph, but a trip to Mars showed me the error of my ways and I swapped back to biomorphs. I'm not ready to discard the human form just yet - I was, I thought, but I revised myself.

First off it's nice to see a couple of other ex-Jovians here. I'm still trying to get used top life outside the Republic and while I'm enjoying the extra freedom, I do kind of miss the sense of certainty that came with life as a Republic soldier. Anyhow, I'm currently sleeved in a heavily modified Galatea. As for why... I couldn't tell you it wasn't really my choice. You ever have a night where you get so drunk/high that you wake up wearing someone else's clothes not knowing where you are or how you got there? That was me but instead of someone else's clothes, I got someone else's body. I'll spare you the details, since it's not really the topic at hand, but long story short I was in Elysium working security for a Jovian diplomat. On my off-hours I decided to check out the infamous Elysian night life since I would probably never get another chance. The last thing I remember was hitting it off with a woman(?) using the morph I'm currently in. I don't remember the details, just that I found the idea of a person in a synth, designed to look attractive, but still obviously robotic socializing in a blatantly anti-synth habitat intrigued me. Things get fuzzy after that and now here I am, a male career soldier raised to be a biocon (though tbh I was never really a 'true believer') stuck in a feminine, but really genderless synthetic body. I can't say I really consider this morph to be "my body" yet, but it isn't as strange and foreign as I would have imagined. Whoever stuck me in this body seems to want me to enjoy it, as it has a bunch of badass mods and a muse that seems eager to show me all the fun shit I can do with it. The two biggest things that stand out to me are how people treat me now and my increased physical capabilities. From a physical side I like the fact that I can basically do all the things I could only do in full combat kit before. I used to pilot a battle suit so I'm used to being able to take small arms fire without much issue, leap two to three metres vertically and punch through concrete. Those abilities always came with the bulk and feeling of having something external strapped to my body. Now I can just do it, which is useful since my old friends aren't all that friendly any more. I also don't really need any material things any more. I've been in this morph for just over two weeks now and I've not needed to worry about food, clothing or shelter, which is a perk since all my bank accounts have been frozen and the only rep I have right now seems to be bad rep. Being a synth in Elysium kind of sucks and I think I might head to a different hab soon. Most people I run into are not sure how to treat me. Synths are generally looked down on and treated as second-class citizens or servants. My morph though is made to be appealing and even a lot of the biomorph obsessed glitterati around here think it's pretty. This means I can never be quite sure how people are going to treat me and I've had quite a few interesting interactions. So while I don't think of this morph as my body, it is growing on me and I've been asking both myself and others a hell of a lot of questions about who I am and what I'm becoming. Whatever it is though, I'm kind of excited to meet the new me.

@Jimalcoatl It's pretty amazing you actually stumbled into getting a Galatea for free. The price tag on these is enough to let you live decently for years if you sell it. What kind of mods does it have? It's rather rate to see them, much less modified heavily as they're more of a social than a work morph.

Yeah it's very weird, and I really want to know why. Hell, that's probably the only reason I haven't gotten the fuck out of Elysium yet. All of the mods are concealed for appearances and I'm still new to having a synthmorph, hell I never even had basic mesh inserts before this happened. In addition to what I'm told are stock augmentations for the Galatea (Chameleon Skin, Enhanced hearing and Mnemonic augmentation) it has Enhanced vision and a T-ray emitter, cyberclaws (which is nice since they are the only weapon I have at the moment and I'm high on unfriendlies and low on allies), Reflex Boosters, Medichines, a hidden compartment and Implanted Oxytocin-A nanotoxins. Like I said, whoever sleeved me in this thing really seems to want me to like it. There may be more that I'm not aware of that my muse hasn't chosen to tell me about. If you know of any robotics techs on Mars who'd be willing to take a look at it discreetly I'd be much obliged.

She was very sociable as she was able to draw people's attention even as a synth in an Elysian club. I remember before everything went blank we talked a lot. Mostly about me and my family, which is odd in and of itself since I'm not the most open about my family life. I'm going to chalk that one up to a dose of Oxytocin-A. Oh, I just remembered, at one point she asked what my thoughts were, as a biocon, on beings that make no pretence to being human. Should they have individual rights, are they people, that kind of thing. I told her I wasn't the best one to ask, since I really only did the biocon thing because all my friends and family did.
