Knowledge of the Prometheans
How known would the Prometheans be to the average person, unaffiliated with Firewall? I'm not saying that they would be common knowledge, but would it be at all possible for the existence to be trivia, or even just rumor or here say?

Nope. People believing in Firewall is Tin-Foil Hat crowd territory. The Prometheans are even more obscure. There will always be rumors and drunk-tales of "benevolent AIs", but they'll never have details, much less a name, and, at the core of it, it'll always be (and be dismissed as) a form of wish fulfillment in a hostile and uncaring universe.

I guess my in-character belief of piously revering the Prometheans is home-brew territory then?

Yep. I wouldn't let it in my game, unless you had gotten the pronoia pathotronics modification, and had chosen some kind of benevolent AI as the subject of that delusional belief. Which could be funny! (must now create NPC with annoyingly upbeat belief in god-like AIs watching out for him personally) And, even then, it would be a delusion, because that character, unless read into the security clearance level that gives him knowledge of the Prometheans, would have no evidence for that sort of belief. Zilch, none, nada, finito, nothing.

Keep in mind...
Even within Firewall, most people have no idea of the Prometheans' existence. Proxies might know varying degrees of rumor at best, and your average Sentinel would (per usual) be completely clueless unless a higher-up told him/her/it first..

If I may be so bold
I do find a the idea of you taking an idea that I take very seriously, my religious beliefs and how they would be affected by the events of EP, and turning them into comic relief to be a bit hurtful. Now I understand that probably isn't your intent at all. I just don't see why absence of evidence is evidence of absence in the belief of benevolent Seed A.I. Like all religion, the key part is taking it on faith.

My apologies. My intent was not to insult you, but look at it from an outside perspective: In the aftermath of an event that stretches the very definition of the word "disaster", we have someone that reacts by creating a belief--one completely without any supporting evidence--of an "angelic" savior that is the polar opposite of the "demonic" forces clearly at work, and then venerates said savior. To most rational people, this would be a clear attempt by an emotionally damaged individual attempting to invoke the "Just World" fallacy/cognitive bias so as to stave off depression and suicidal beliefs, not only at having had an event of such magnitude actually occur, but also at the survivor's guilt of having survived, while so many others did not. The human mind is not wired to believe in chaos and lack of determinism on such a level, and thus constructs narratives and other reasons to answer the question of "Why?" But, even as they are understandable responses to a tragedy on the level of the Fall, they will be seen as either absurd or dangerous (one step away from outright TITAN worship) by the majority who did not go through the same psychological responses. (It might even be taken as a direct insult by people who helped transhumanity survive and rebuild, because that belief directly challenges their own belief that it was their own abilities and actions that helped people survive, by instead insisting that they didn't survive based on their own actions, but by the unknowable and unprovable intervention of a benevolent god-like intelligence... who was somehow too weak to prevent the Fall) And, taking it the absurd extreme of "The AI Gods are watching out for me, personally!" is, sadly, all too believable. I was raised in a fundamentalist community, don't forget. I have had to talk far too many people who believe that "God won't let anything happen to me!" out of stupid and foolhardy actions (my personal favorite was a friend of mine who went walking out onto a frozen lake when we were teens, and when I tried to get him to come back to shore, told me that "God will take me when it's my time!" I shouted back, "Steven, you don't know when that time is!" And, almost on cue, a minute later, there was a loud sound as the ice cracked...). It would be that mindset I would be mocking with that comic relief--the people who have gone so far into the fallacy that they have managed to replace their rational risk assessment with blind faith in a personal savior with a personal interest in their survival. (to the aficionados of Jewish humor on this forum, yes, I'm invoking the punchline "I sent three boats and a helicopter! What more do you want?") EDIT: Also, you can still namedrop God, Gods, or the socially-acceptable deity of your choice when engaging in profanity. I have no problem with that. As a very wise man has pointed out:

Okay, when you put it like that, that's actually funny! I love that joke! Both of them. The former I always loved, and the latter is just too rich! See atheists and theists can both laugh at each other and no one's feelings have to get hurt. Just, coming from someone OF faith, might I suggest having another character contrast as a sort of spiritual straight man? Someone who also believes in a god, though maybe not the same one, but isn't an idiot on top of that? Sorry if I was being rude and easily offended.

Meh. When it comes to being
Meh. When it comes to being easily offended, you have skin like Rhino-hide. I've dealt with real touchy sorts. The kind that have had their sense of humor surgically removed and walk around all day looking for something to take offense at. The kind whose kids are being raised in the same mold and will take the other kid who suggests with a smirk that god perhaps played a joke on people out behind the synagogue and... instruct him on proper deference to their humorless interpretation of a given deity. The kind who fit my personal definition of fundamentalism: "The deep... dark... haunting fear... that someone... somewhere... may be... enjoying themselves." (also, thinking. They hate people who think for themselves). But those are the fundamentalists, who I have no problem mocking, those who think that the world is here for their own benefit and ego, because they see no difference between themselves and god. God is in perfect agreement with them. He loves what they love, and He hates what they hate. On the other hand, honest, decent and sincere people of faith, who live by what they believe and aren't in anybody's face--I disagree with them, but I respect them. But those people are like fish, swimming with the current. They are quiet, stealthy, and move with the world. They do not wear their affiliation on their sleeves, but let their own faith and integrity guide and inform them as to the right course of action. They may be conspicuous in their faith, but they seek to convert by example, if they seek to convert at all. They lead by deeds, not words. They are righteous, not self-righteous. That is the distinction I wish to make. So, that's the thing. A person who has faith and lets it inform what they do to the ethical and moral conclusions--you wouldn't notice the difference unless you asked them or they are being moderately overt about it. A person who thinks that they have so much influence with their deity that said deity will protect them from all ills and announces that fact? Yeah, they make great comic relief--or, more often, fuel for tragedy and horror. Think of it as the difference between people like Firefly's Shepherd Book or the Dresden Files' Father Forthill and Michael Carpenter, who act in a principled and faithful manner, and real life people like the religious bigots who quote-mine their own holy books to justify their hate and exclusion of anything they disapprove of. This Shortpacked plotline (here to here, 9 strips) is a perfect example of the difference. (Heck, for the last two years, I've been playing every Thursday in my Changeling: The Lost campaign a Yeti Buddhist Monk who takes his religious beliefs very seriously and does his best to act as a man of moral integrity and faith in the f-ing World Of Darkness! Which, let me tell you, has not been easy! But I've done my best to maintain Brother Saepi's Clarity score at 8, and, so far, I've kept it there, for nearly a hundred sessions (and my party-mates have Clarity scores that don't even sum to mine). ^_^)

Others postulate that the Prometheans were a TITAN splinter faction that broke off and attempted to counteract the TITANs activities during the Fall. Still others whisper that the Prometheans are not of transhuman origin at all and are actually a digital alien mindform that found Earth and now actively interferes with transhuman affairs. Prominent organizations like the Planetary Consortium discount such rumors or otherwise remain silent.

I don't bring up my faith in mixed company unless I feel the subject matter will be well received. Regardless, my official faith is Gnostic Catholicism, the Prometheans are just incorporated into the worship. It's not like my mesh profile reads "TITAN worshipper." And if "they" (we STILL haven't gotten rid of that?) want to shut me up, it only means I'm doing my job right. And I have a spaceship, loyal crew, and a weapon between me and them. That's all I need.

I dunno. I could totally see someone making a logical argument that a benevolent Seed AI exists, and it's looking out for Transhumanity as a whole. After all, the TITANs left for no apparent reason. Why would they do that, rather than remaining to continue to wipe out Transhumanity, unless a benevolent Seed AI made them leave?

Ah! That ;) Yeah I broke my usual pattern of not-getting-involved. ;) As you can probably tell I've received actual rhetorical training cause my Uni's English department was really good for a engineering/life sciences focused school. Pretty good for history too come to think of it... huh. Maybe I just landed really good teachers along the way. ;) What a lot of people think of as "capitalism" isn't actually the core principles as laid out by Smith, in much the way the words "socialism", "anarchist", and "communism" get thrown about in a way completely divorced from their original meanings. Denotations vs connotations. :-/ So it's threads I'm more likely to pop into - but once the topic gets hot and emotions are involved - out I go. No need to drop context into ears that aren't listening at that moment. Y' a braver entity than I. ;)
