Rep and the Factors
Im finaly geting back to EP. I've been thinking about the factors, and I'd like to poll the comunity on some questions; can you use Rep when dealing with the factors? Do the factors have their own rep system? Which economic philosophy do the factors follow; capitalism, transitional capitalism, socialism, new socialism extropianism, or other? Has any transhman gone to live or traveled with the factors? Which groups or agencies currently deal with the factors besides Starware? What is the meaning of the name 'Factor'? Thanks for your help. Hope evryone is having a good year. Been missin you guys :-)

Mea Culpa: My mode of speech can make others feel uninvited to argue or participate. This is the EXACT opposite of what I intend when I post.

1. The Factors are not going
1. The Factors are not going to be interested in human currencies like rep or credits. They most are interested in the trade of information, cultural artifacts and perhaps raw materials they need. 2. Remember that the Factor's natural state is a collective mass of goo and they only become individuals on a temporary basis. Their mindset as ambush predators mean they favor slow, cautious planning. This means that their economic thought is probably radically different from any transhuman analogue but might have more similarities to socialism in terms of 'central planning' than free market capitalism. 3. Maybe? That sort of thing is a decent plot hook so it'd be up to you as GM. 4. If I recall correctly, they also appeared around Mercury and Titan, so they probably have contact with the Titanian Commonwealth. Since Ozma's technical mission is to focus on xenolife, they're probably the Planetary Consortium's main negotiators with the Factors. 5. "Factor" is a word that can have many meanings. In business, a factor is like a broker or agent who work on behalf of another in exchange for a commission. The Factors allegedly chose this name to refer to themselves because they claim to diplomatically represent other alien species. However, factors are also terms used in biology for enzymes and parts of your immune system. There are other possible meanings too and if you wanted to put a different slant on the Factors, you could perhaps draw more on one of the other meanings of the word.

This is just me -- my
This is just me -- my partners have different takes -- but I view the Factors as having a lot in common with the Investors in Schismatrix. Rep and Cred might matter to them -- provided it gets them stuff that they, for the own so-far inscrutable means, need/desire. Leodiensian is right to say that their economic ideas don't map neatly to H+ ideologies, and that their lack of individualism is a factor. Consider: The arguments between competing human ecomnic models over the last few centuries have been in large place an argument about what most benefits the individual & their kin. Are they better off as part of a great collective that tries to see to the needs of all equally (socialism), by being unbound to seek their own enrichment (libertarianism), or by being empowered to seek their own destinies without the interference of a super-large collective _or_ the potential to be coerced by vested interests (anarchism)? The Factor sense of identity and individuality is so different from that of humans that neither of the three are wholly relevant.
