moons are far more plentiful
moons are far more plentiful than Pandora gates. and a few kg of antimatter in a presser vestle the strongest pressure vessel you can make breaching in the core of Jupiter will have an effect even without a gate. the heat/pressure should be enough to fuse hydrogen which is locally plentiful. the reaction may not last long enough to become a star but you can bet it will cause the Jovians some interesting effects. if it doesn't kill them it will detract them. then again there aren't many thinks you cant break by applying 'a couple of kg of antimatter'

True, but the idea was to send a message, that message being "we will not stand for this shit of you throwing moons at people." Very little does that quite as well as using an irreplaceable alien artifact as ordnance. (Technically, they may not be replaceable, but they are reusable - but you'll never get it back out of Jupiter.) Plus, given that they're all, you know, wormholes and stuff, I reckon that ought to add some extra Interesting (IE: Destructive) effects to detonating one inside Jupiter that just a gigantic bottle of Boom wouldn't have.

Kilos might be unnecessary, really... Though for lack of a pandora gate, a few-three kilos would do nicely anyway. Either way, the message gets across loud and clear: If you throw a moon at someone, we will throw something even more destructive back at a you.

Looking at the free electron
Looking at the free electron laser entry at atomic rockets http://www.projectrho.com/public_html/rocket/spacegunconvent.php it looks like the accelerator loop doesn't need to be circular. Two long straightaways (1.570 km each?) and a circular bend at either end with assorted necessary equipment added to that. This arrangement would be relatively easier to build a ship around than a ring. Although it would be an almost literal glass cannon, the promise of tremendous damage at unanswerable range would be very tempting. Any design would, like the A-10 Warthog, be built around the big gun. With the x-rays that "spray out" of the curved sections the engines and crew spaces would be toward the center of the craft giving it a diamond or "hot dog" appearance. Aiming is done by pointing the entire ship. Not too big a deal as the range involved means small corrections would have a wide sweep of the beam and evasive actions can be somewhat leisurely. Even then a small fleet of escorts are necessary for protection as too much mass in armor would impact performance. Targeting vessels at range would be a challenge even with recon assets equipped with qbit comms so it's mostly used against more static targets. Ultimately, you'd have ships worthy of the classification "dreadnoughts"
