A new actual play from my group
I don't know if it's taboo to go posting actual plays, but I figured I'd give it a shot. I fell in love with Eclipse Phase as soon as my friend turned me to the first amazing AP from the wonderful guys over at RPPR (if you read this, I'm a big fan). Since then, I've started my own campaign that my friends have been playing. I started with the Mind the WMD module that came with the GM screen. I figured giving the players some pregens and using a rather straight-forward story like that would help ease them into the system. Since then, I've moved on to an original story and we're still going. We've gotten a few comments on the APs on our website, and people seem to be enjoying them. So I thought I'd post them here, in the heart of Eclipse Phase land, for all of the real hardcore fans to enjoy. I have to say, I'm kind of blessed with a good group of players. I can see it being really easy for a group in EP to go off the rails (because there's just so much awesome stuff!), but my guys manage to keep it together. In case you're not familiar with the module, here's a brief summary: Five transhumans, each with a unique skillset, meet aboard a traveling space city called the Ecstatic Metamorphosis. Each of them is there for a different reason, but a message from Firewall brings them together for a common cause. Rumor has it that someone is selling a dangerous weapon on the black market, and now it’s up to them to find out what it is and destroy it at all costs. Anyway, here's the link to the first game. I hope you enjoy it. http://ragnerdrok.com/2012/04/12/rnr-actual-play-eclipse-phase-mind-the-...

I have hungered for more Eclipse Phase Actual Plays, and RPPR puts them out at a glacial pace, so I'll definitely give it a shot on my drive tomorrow. Expect feedback.

I hope you enjoy it. I did a quick search and didn't see too many APs on the forum, so I thought I'd post it.

Re: A new actual play from my group
I made it up to the fight in the arms deal. While it definitely needs some polish, a continuation of this campaign is definitely something I'd continue to listen to. The GM does a really decent job of describing the setting consistently and coming up with situations and NPCs on the fly. My absolute favorite moment so far was the Fury morph's random bar fight scene to sate his social-impotence fueled lust for violence, while the con-artist hustled bets. Also, you guys have a good habit of not talking over each other, which is very much appreciated. And you kept the story moving forward rather than letting it get bogged down in planning and preparation. On the criticism side, other than Lucas (the Fury), and to a lesser degree the chipper bodyguard, I didn't get much of a feel for the characters. It felt like the players could have used character names and described them doing the things they were doing a little more often. I'd hope that as more AP's are posted the players would explore their characters more and I'd get a more solid sense of them. This is especially important I think because all your voices come through sounding very similar. On the audio quality side, it was maybe a little too clear: I heard a lot of people breathing, especially in the beginning. Back on to a high note, this one has a definite chance of being something I regularly listen to, so please keep up the good work and take my critical statements as an effort to be constructive rather than hurtful.

Re: A new actual play from my group
Thanks a lot for the feedback, and I'm glad you enjoyed it. I know what you mean about the characterization. The main reason for that is that the guy playing Lukas is the only one who had any experience with Eclipse Phase before this game. He was also the only one who made his own character (everyone else were using pregens). But we're five games into the chronicle now, and the other players have found their groove. I'd say that happens in the third game. I hope you enjoy the rest of the game. And we've got more APs up, so I hope you enjoy those as well.

Thanks for sharing! I'm listening to it now and enjoying it. I think it takes any group of players some time to find their groove in a new game, but (for me at least) it's still entertaining to listen to. I look forward to hearing more!

Re: A new actual play from my group
I have listened up to the third session and so far I am loving it (the Crow Doctor obviously didn't take the Common Sense trait :) ). I do have a suggestion: You should start the podcasts by having the players introduce themselves by stating their name and the character they are playing (like the Knights of the Night do in their actual plays). It would really help the listener keep the various characters/players organized, especially when you have a large number of players who don't all attended every session. Also, there were some game mechanical things I wanted to point out (I'm sort of a rules person so bear with me): 1. When making attacks using SA and BF modes you get two attacks(p. 198, EP). I keep waiting for the players to make their second attack and they don't and it really bugs me: especially when they decide to fire their second pistol to get a second attack without firing both shots from their first pistol. Arghhhh! 2. When making attacks if you get a MOS of 30+ you get a +5 DV bonus and if you get a MOS of 60+ you get a +10 DV bonus (under determine outcome p. 192, EP). 3. If you hit with the first attack of a semi automatic beam weapon (such as a plasma rifle or laser pulsar, but not an agonizer which is single shot ) and you can see the beam, you can sacrifice your second shot to concentrate fire (p. 195, EP) to do double damage (great if you have a MOS of 60+). If you miss on the first shot, you can sweep the beam (p. 194, EP) and get a free aim (+10 modifier) on the second shot. 4. Mars is not a vacuum so plasma rifles won't overheat.

Re: A new actual play from my group
I'm glad you're enjoying it, Lalande! And that's a good suggestion with having everyone introduce their characters. I'll make sure we do that from now on. And I hope you'll forgive me if I'm a little...loose with some of the rules. It's A LOT to keep track of (both for me and for the players) and gets a little overwhelming. I'll make sure to read over the combat modifier section of the rules again, but I think it may be better to drop some of the minutiae for the sake of making the game easier to play. But from now on, I'll try to make sure that everyone (even the enemies. hehehehe) get their second shots. And their damage bonuses, too.

Hmmm. Have you considered the Eidetic Memory and Math Boost augmentations? They are both only Low cost :). But seriously, I had the same problem of keeping track of everything (and I don't even GM) until I encountered D&D 4e. Then I was enlightened (don't laugh, I'm serious). One of the good things about 4e is all the characters/monster powers are on neat little cards/blocks and I adapted that structure for the common actions that my Eclipse Phase character takes in combat. Then I just pull the right card and it walks me through the turn, including any special rules (plus I can plan my next turn/phase by putting the cards in order while other people are acting). Also, having just listened to your fourth actual play I have to express my condolences for the loss of your poor Titan warbot. It never even had a chance to hurt anybody important :(. Listening to the fight though, I think the warbots problem wasn't a balance issue against the number of players, but using the wrong stats for the tactics you wanted to use; a big lumbering bot that doesn't use cover should have had stats similar to a large, heavily armored vehicle (hundreds of DUR, armor in the 30's to 40's with no weak points to bypass with called shots) so that it didn't need to fight tactically against the player characters, it could win in a slugging match as long as it took out anyone with a heavy weapon in the first turn. The stats you used seemed to be for a fast moving, roughly man sized warbot that needed to use cover and fight smart to win against determined opposition.

I was picturing a big, lumbering bot based off its description in the core book. But a regular TITAN warbot has a DUR around 80 (I don't have the book with me right now, so I'm not sure) and is decked out with plasma rifles, missile launchers and automatic rifles. I didn't want to kill ALL of the players, so I nerfed the warbot a little. I figured it was a damaged unit that was salvaged from Earth. But my players have definitely taught me that important lesson: they can handle some enemies. So next time I won't be so keen to hold back.

Hey folks. Our latest Eclipse Phase AP just went up. This brings an end to the "You Can't go Home" arc. I'm going to be starting up a new arc, Godfire, soon. It'll take place on Mars. But until then, enjoy this AP! http://ragnerdrok.com/2012/06/27/ap-eclipse-phase-you-cant-go-home-game-...

Re: A new actual play from my group
It is in the queue, though Know Evil just dropped Ep 13 so it will be a bit before I get to it. Dr. druggie-Odo-Crow was an amazing addition to the game, and I definitely hope to hear more of him. One little thing that always annoys me: You refer to every recorded medium as an 'XP'. XPs are Experience Playback, basically full-immersion sensory recordings, basically experiencing life through someone's eyes. If it's just a moving image, it's a vid or hologram.

Hey folks.
Hey folks. Just an update: there WILL be more APs coming (if you guys care). We've been posting other games lately (which you should check out), but we'll be getting back to Eclipse Phase soon. We took a break for a few weeks between arcs of my campaign, but we're back into it now. Things are...interesting. Olympus is a fun place.

Godfire
We're back everyone! I know how excited everyone is! (/sarcasm) The next arc of my campaign has finally gotten off the ground. I sent my players to Mars (again) to follow the only lead they have on the Prometheus Syndicate: Blake Diaz. They're heading to Olympus, home of the space elevator and seat of the greatest amount of Barsoomian anti-PC feelings on Mars. This is much less action-oriented than my last games, so I'm glad that my players stepped up and put on their roleplaying hats. Here's the link. I hope you all enjoy the game. http://ragnerdrok.com/2012/08/01/ap-eclipse-phase-godfire-part-i-olympus/

And here's Godfire Part II. I have to say that when I gave one of my players a task to perform to prove his dedication to the Barsoomians, I wasn't expecting him to do it with quite so much...gusto. Also, we've recorded game three in this arc. It should be coming out in two weeks or so. http://ragnerdrok.com/2012/08/09/ap-eclipse-phase-godfire-part-ii-acts-o...

Wow. Sorry for not updating this thread. If anyone was looking for more, I apologize. Things got crazy for me and it kind of slipped my mind. I wrapped up the Godfire arc and an epilogue. I'm going to run a one-shot for my players this week to playtest a rules-light version of EP that I came up with, based off of the Cthulhu Dark rules. We'll post that AP, too. Sorry to keep you all waiting for so long. Here are the rest of the Eclipse Phase AP's we posted: Part 3: http://ragnerdrok.com/2012/08/16/ap-eclipse-phase-godfire-part-iii-perso... No, thank you.
The wall of links is just fine. I think recording an actual play should be an EP tradition of a sort. (Now the hypocritical bit) I would post one, if I could get my players to do it, and if I could get a game started. Hats off to your players for taking on the task, and to you for keeping it going.

My pleasure! We started
My pleasure! We started recording the APs to make filler for the weeks when we weren't posting our podcast. Then we realized that our APs were more popular than the podcast. It was kind of a bittersweet moment, but what can you do? It's just more incentive to keep playing. And looking at my work schedule, it looks like I'm not going to be able to run another game until next week. So that would push back all the other updates. Sorry. But the games will return! I'm not finished torturing my players yet! I mean...telling my story...

Hello, peoples! I'm Ryan, the guy who plays Lucas in shark's campaign here. Figured I'd poke my head into this thread to say hi, since I'm involved in the game and all. Anyway, just so I'm actually contributing something, I'll give up some insider info. We played another session this past Wednesday, and it was a return to form for us as far as kicking butt and not destabilizing major biomes and sociopolitical structures. I think the recording is gonna go up in three weeks (as we've got a Mage: The Ascension game scheduled for next week and a regular episode the week after that). I'm sure either Alex or I will link it here when it goes live. That's all I've got for now, ladies and gents. Seeya on the forums!

Hehe, thanks. I'm still upset about that, mostly because if I had just kept my mouth shut, I could have shared the blame with Derek, Dalton's player. I enjoy playing Lucas--especially when there's violence happening. Speaking of which, the next game has one of my favorite fights thus far in our EP campaign. I won't say any more, but it went a long way toward making me feel better about Mars. I originally envisioned Lucas as an angry, sensory-addicted soldier who never quite got over his experience during The Fall, even though he had the memories erased. When there isn't any trouble around to be had, he goes looking for some in order to make himself feel something. Now that he's got the Martian space elevator debacle on his conscience--especially after his encounter with Blake in Olympus--he's rethinking the transhuman notion that you can edit the unpleasant bits of your memory out because he knows the past can always come back to haunt him. Anyway, thanks so much for your comment! I'm glad you like what I do.

New Session: Self-Discovery 1: "The House that Steel Built"
Hi all! Just wanted to sneak in here again and point out that we've got a new session out, Self-Discovery, Part 1: "The House that Steel Built". We posted it last week, but I guess Alex (shark) hasn't had the chance to mention it here. We should have another session out next Wednesday, the 23rd, which contains what is perhaps my favorite incident in the game thus far.
Spoiler: Highlight to view
It involves my character, Lucas, Ed's character, Doc Skeelaxx, and a buddy brick.
Things are getting interesting for our party, let me tell you.

Glad to hear it, because we've got another session up today! Be sure to check it out when you get the chance. This was a fun one--albeit a little short--action packed, and hilarious. (At least it was for us when we played through it. Hopefully that'll translate to some vicarious guffaws for you listeners out there.) We should have another one up in three weeks or so, provided that there are no changes to our queue of recordings. Anywho, just wanted to post the link. Hope everyone's enjoying the games so far. Ta!

More Self-Discovery
Hey all! Haven't visited in a while, so I figured I'd bring everyone up to speed. We've put up two more sessions of Alex's game since I last posted, both concerning what should have been a simple in-and-out mission to retrieve a crypto-key from a Fa Jing mining colony. As you'd expect, the place was teeming with xeno-parasites. Self-Discovery Game 3: "Add 'Exo-' for Danger!", in which our stalwart Sentinels are given a relatively simple task that somehow turns into a nightmare of alien insects, Doc Skeelaxx performs an impromptu autopsy, Amir leaps into the waiting clutches of a horrible monster, and Dalton is extremely badass. Self-Discovery Game 4: "Phony Tough and Crazy Brave", in which things go from "worse" to "severely screwed up," the team discovers that Firewall and altruism rarely make good bedfellows, everybody has to run like hell, Lucas flails helplessly as I fail several Freefall checks in succession, and Gavin faces off against the parasite queen.

My First Time with Bump in the Night
The last episode of Self-Discovery will be out next week, but in the meantime, we have the first half of an Eclipse Phase two-shot to hold you over! This week, I take a turn GMing the starter scenario Bump in the Night, by Brian Cross. I engineered a bit of a convoluted scenario in which the Planetary Consortium ended up running a black op against itself so that Alex could play the Oversight Auditor from Sunward. I hope you enjoy it. Part 2 should be out in two weeks. Bump in the Night 1: Discreet Inquiries. NOTE: Since this is my first session GMing for EP, any feedback or constructive criticisms you forum dwellers have would be much appreciated.

As promised last week, here is the final installment of the Self-Discovery arc, "Dial Z for Zombieland," in which we interrogate a Prometheus Syndicate infomorph, infiltrate the Zrbny mining facility, and fight for our lives against the psychotic AGI currently running the place. Plus, we send some Alpha forks on a journey that will most likely leave them dead or scarred for eternity! It's all kinds of fun. Self-Discovery Game 5: "Dial Z for Zombieland!"

Bump in the Night Part 2
Here it is, fellows, girls and others, the hilariously violent (or violently hilarious?) conclusion to Bump int he Night! More proof that Eclipse Phase characters can solve just about any problem with a shitload of advanced weaponry, clever social engineering ploys, and a liberal application of octopus ink. Spoiler: Highlight to view
I was a little disappointed with how the ending turned out, even though it was hilarious as hell to play through, because my party and the dice took a pretty intimidating villain and basically made her the straight man in a slapstick routine. I was rolling like shit that night, let me tell you. I tried to preserve a little bit of the scene's drama by having Alex and James roll WIL tests to remain calm while she was blind-firing her machine gun empty at them, but I couldn't keep myself from allowing James' repeated ink attacks to successfully disrupt the mobsters' attempts to kill him. It was just too funny, and the dice kept leading us down that road from both sides of the screen.

Actually, we haven't posted any more sessions because that was the last one we played. Alex has been hard at work planning the next few games, dreaming up terrible things to populate the place where we transmitted ourselves. He wants to do a sandbox-style arc where we wander the ruins of a city created by insane superintelligences until we find whatever horrible thing we're looking for. We're supposed to resume playing next Thursday evening, so the AP will probably go up sometime in the following weeks. I think he's calling the next arc, "The TITAN City."

We're back with a new session! Stuff we've learned in this episode:
 • Don't abuse the NPC oracles or they'll stop giving you information.
 • Don't go for a swim in the River of Pain, because apparently TITANs take their references to classical mythology very seriously.
 • Don't ever visit a Museum of Natural History curated by an insane machine god unless you want to be disturbed out of your tiny little transhuman mind.

Any actual play brings me such joy. What sort of recording setup did you use?
IDaMan008 IDaMan008's picture
Re: EccentricOwl
I started off recording our game sessions after listening to the RPPR guys, so when I went equipment shopping, I pretty much copied Ross' setup based on his descriptions on their forums. We use an original Zoom H2 set to record mp3 at 160 kb/sec. When I'm prepping a file to upload, I run it through an autoleveler, tack on the leader, and mix it down to 64kb/sec using Audacity (cos it's free). We were posting our games over at the RPPR Community AP site for a year or so before we decided to create our own pop culture / geek-related podcast, and we use the Zoom for that as well (cos we're cheap). There's always the possibility that we might retool at some point in the future--upgrade to the newer Zoom, or to something I can mount elsewhere so as to avoid the horrible banging when one of us kicks the table--but for right now, none of us are willing to pony up the cash. Still, I think our recordings sound pretty decent. If you've got any suggestions on improving the quality of the audio on a (severely) limited budget, I'd be happy to hear them. We're always excited to hear from our listeners.

I'm back!
Before Ryan steals my thunder, I wanted to post the latest game! This time, the players finish exploring Cocytus and move on to Elysium. What could possibly go wrong? http://ragnerdrok.com/2013/05/29/ap-eclipse-phase-i-3-tartarus-3-elysium
So on our heels a fresh perfection treads/ A power more strong in beauty, born of us/ And fated to excel us, as we pass/ In glory that old Darkness: nor are we/ Thereby more conquer'd, than by us the rule/ Of shapeless Chaos.

Gunnery
(Paraphrased from a one-shot that Alex ran tonight. Lolita, a female Fury, Aiko, a male octopus uplift, and 3lizab3th, an AGI spider-bot, are wandering the halls of a derelict aerostat habitat in Saturn's atmosphere.) 3lizab3th: I feel distressed. Aiko: Why's that, Beth? 3lizab3th: Because my current body is not equipped with missiles. Perhaps when we return to orbit...? Lolita: Absolutely not. 3lizab3th: Do you mistrust me, human? I assure you I am perfectly friendly. Lolita: Then why do you keep asking for missiles? 3lizab3th: I would feel much more comfortable accompanying you on dangerous salvage operations if I were to be outfitted with-- Aiko: Give it up, Beth. We're not going to give you missiles. 3lizab3th: But Aiko, I have been programmed to use missiles. Why would my creator endow me with such knowledge unless I was meant to use it? Lolita: It's a mystery. Now enough about the goddamn missiles! 3lizab3th: In that case, what about a mortar?

New APs Posted!
For those who don't know, we've put up a few new Eclipse Phase APs! Last week, we posted the wrap-up of the TITAN City arc of Alex's campaign, and yesterday we put up a one-shot that we did based on Glory (not part of the main campaign). "I Heart Tartarus 4: Styx": The last session of the TITAN City arc. "Glory": A session based on the module by Jack Graham. Hope you enjoy!

One-shot and New Arc
Hey, folks! It's been a while, but we're back with more Eclipse Phase games. Alex has started the next (and possibly penultimate?) arc of his campaign. Also, we posted a one-shot a little while ago that I never plugged here because I'm terrible. Fugitives, session 1: Soul Thieves Burned out of Firewall and on the run from the Planetary Consortium, the team of former Sentinels contacts their old criminal buddy Abebe in order to help them procure new identities, cred and backups. He sends them on a mission to the Nine Lives stronghold Legba in the Main Belt, a place where ego slavers and forknappers trade minds like currency. Can they liberate Abebe’s wife from a pair of ruthless Lost nutcases with a thirst for violence, or will they find themselves on the wrong end of the soul trade? Cloud Diving, or, Flashlights and InfoSec Years ago, the first Saturnian aerostat Cloud Holm was lost in a violent storm during its opening gala, a notorious disaster that represented the greatest loss of transhuman life since The Fall. Now, it appears as if part of the crippled habitat may have survived, and Chronus Ventures, the Titanian microcorp that financed its construction, wants answers, so they send a salvage team to investigate the wreckage and download important data from the habitat’s central computer. When the salvagers encounter a group of desperate survivors, they’ll have to use a combination of finesse and quick wits if they want to depart with the information they’ve been sent to recover. Before long, another deadly storm looms on the horizon, and they find themselves racing against the clock to collect the data, return to the ship and escape alive. Will they make it, or will they end up permanent residents of Cloud Holm? Listen to find out! Let us know what you think! We hope you enjoy it as much as we did.

Rag-NERD-rok Campaign Update and A One-Shot
Hiya EP forums! I know it's been a while since we've posted anything in this thread, so I wanted to pop in and bring it up to date. (Please excuse the necro-post; I wanted to keep everything in the same thread.) Since my last post in August, we've played three more sessions of the Fugitives arc--things have gotten pretty crazy. We're getting close to the endgame, which Alex has told us is going to be a double-length adventure (probably split into two episodes). Not sure when exactly we'll get around to playing, but hopefully we'll be able to swing it in the next month or so. In the meantime, check out the most recent sessions of our long campaign if you haven't already done so. We also just posted a pretty interesting on-the-fly one-shot that I had a lot of fun with. I'd wholeheartedly recommend giving it a listen. Fugitives 2: Angle of Attack Fugitives 3: Hounded Fugitives 4: The Asteroid of Dr. Hyperion Zephyr's Ark

The Final Sessions
Hey all! Once again, we've neglected to keep this thread current with our latest posted sessions. We recorded the final game in Alex's newly titled "Promethean Chronicles" campaign last week, so we're releasing the final two episodes back-to-back this week and next! Here are the links to bring this list up to date: Fugitives 5: "Machina Deus" - The team faces off against some heavily armed forks of Blake Diaz, and uncovers a secret Promethean AI who might be able to help them expose the Prometheus Syndicate's misdeeds. Going Home 1: "Surviving The Fall" - The newly reinstated Sentinels pursue Charlemagne, the leader of the Prometheus Syndicate, to Earth, where he is broadcasting a signal that will call the TITANs back to the solar system. Going Home 2: "The End" goes up next Wednesday!
