Campaign: Extropian Sentinals
So, I started running the game about 2 weeks ago, getting ready to have the third session. Here's the plot so far, I'm open for any feedback or comments. Okay, so, the characters (4 of them) are on Extropia, they're already Firewall Sentinals, but they don't know each other. They're contacted by a Proxy (Cheshire, AR illusion is a cheshire cat, calls them his Alices, talks about everything in terms of Carroll's books, whole nine yards), and told to intercept 4 individuals heading for an area of the hab where the atmosphere has gone septic and relieve them of a package, by force if necessary. The group does so, with a modicum of force, exits, and regroups. They're contacted by cheshire, told the package is about 100 egos stolen from a Cognite egobank, and to guard it until they are contacted in a day or two. They've already foiled one retrieval attempt, though one of them will be in a healing vat in a hospital for the next five days. I'm trying to decide if Firewall is going to have him resleeved until he is healed so that he will be able contribute to the op. So, here is the behind the scenes. The egonappers consist of a group of 3 thugs, 1 infiltrator (who was hired on as Cognite security 3 months prior to begin setting up the operation), and 1 hacker. This groupof egonappers was hired by a Firewall operative (they don't know he's Firewall, or even of Firewall) with a high G-rep to rob this egobank. Firewall didn't use sentinals because there's too much risk of losing them in robbing an egobank (Due to the heinous nature of the crime, and the punishments usually carried, I do mean PERMANENT loss). I imagine that Firewall keeps a list of egos that, if found in a bank or wherever, are marked for retrieval. This bank holds one such ego, a Nanobiochemical engineer who was a luminary and believed lost in the Fall, his retrieval and reinstantiation would be a huge boon to transhumanity (and, incidentally, Firewall). The plan was to have the egonappers rob the bank, Sentinals in the area would be activated to retrieve the package, then a Cognite infosec operative who is a member of Firewall and placed in the bank would immediately meet the sentinals, retrieve this specifc ego, and return the package to the bank, identifying the sentinals as security he deputized on the spot to help him after the robbery. Firewall gets the egos it wants and also happens to nab a group of egonappers. 2 birds with one stone. Now the twist. The Cognite Firewall operative was killed in the robbery, his cortical stack destoyed, and his backup ego was one of the ones stolen. Now, instead of guarding the package for, at most, an hour, the characters have to sit on this box o' egos for 2 days while another Cognite Firewall sentinal is activated and egocast in, the hacker is frantically scrabbling to find them, and Cognite has activated a contract with Stellar Intelligence to investigate the robbery while keeping it under wraps (having it leak out that your egobank was robbed is very bad for business). I should note that the characters don't know any of this. all they know is that they were told to get this package, it's full of egos, and to guard until someone comes to get it. So, long post, but thoughts or comments?

Nice! Maybe a truly subtle twist is that the mishap wasn't a mishap: there is another Firewall proxy trying to set up Cheshire. Maybe the "Red Queen" just wants to embarrass Cheshire for his tendency to make overly complicated plans (she is of the "off with their heads, re-sleeve them later" school), maybe she knows something about the engineer she can't let on. Or maybe this is part of a bigger internal power-struggle that will play out over further adventures.

Interesting story, indeed. I'd just like to pick up on Arenamontanus' thoughts... When I first read the EP corebook I was convinced I'd never run a Firewall-campaign, but the more I think about the more I'm willing to give it a try. Having Firewall being more internally complex and ambiguous is one of the reasons. Power struggles within the organisation would definitely give Firewall more depths, I like it!

Re: Campaign: Extropian Sentinals
Could Cheshire be a rogue beta fork of the original Cognite Firewall operative ?

I like the story, simple in appearance, but way more complex if you start getting in depth.

Hmmm, I like the Red Queen idea, however, I don't think I'm going to make her a Firewall proxy, or at least not an active one. actually, I wonder... Okay, so, why does Cheshire need this ego? Like I said, mayber there's a Firewall wish list running around. or maybe he needs this ego to help him combat ... something. nanoplague perhaps. or something worse. Oooh, I got it. okay, imagine, Firewall proxy goes by the name of Queen. Does her job well, plans well, however, grows disillusioned with transhumanity in general, increasingly bitter, finally disappears. Everyone figures she was made, ran afoul of the hypercorps, or OZMA, or something like that, life goes on. fast forward several years, and Firewall ex-sentinal turned proxy Cheshire catches wind of something. the mesh whispers rumors of cannibalistic nanoswarms. There's an outbreak of a mutagenic virus on a small outpost in the main belt. There's a massacre on a scum flotilla, Petal junkies gone berserk. They say it's the work of one entity. They say this entity isn't even human anymore, that it wants to rule the Main Belt, turn transhumanity into it's loyal vassals. They say this exhuman threat calls itself "The Red Queen". They say it's coming to Extropia. well, I'll have to work on it, flesh it out, smooth over the rough spots, but yeah, I think I got my villain.
