Solid Light
"Harvard and MIT scientists are challenging the conventional wisdom about light, and they didn't need to go to a galaxy far, far away to do it. Working with colleagues at the Harvard-MIT Center for Ultracold Atoms, a group led by Harvard Professor of Physics Mikhail Lukin and MIT Professor of Physics Vladan Vuletic have managed to coax photons into binding together to form molecules – a state of matter that, until recently, had been purely theoretical. The work is described in a September 25 paper in Nature. The discovery, Lukin said, runs contrary to decades of accepted wisdom about the nature of light. Photons have long been described as massless particles which don't interact with each other – shine two laser beams at each other, he said, and they simply pass through one another. 'Photonic molecules,' however, behave less like traditional lasers and more like something you might find in science fiction – the light saber." 1. These photons don't
1. These photons don't interact directly with each other. They interact with the rubidium atoms' electrical field as an intermeidiator, so it's indirect. 2. This Rydberg matter is about as dense as a gas and very cold. Comparing this to a light saber I don't think was a good choice. 3. More of a "frozen photonic gas" than "solid light".

Killjoy. It's still exciting. ^_^

If nothing else it makes for
If nothing else it makes for good props in EP. "The lab module is full of silvery cylindrical containers - light crystals holding Rydberg states, as their AR labels clearly indicates. Cryogenic systems hum softly, covered with warnings about cold, lasers and magnetic fields. 'Glad you could come!' Joe the armorer greets you. He is holding a stack of cannisters. 'I have been brewing up some amazingly nasty photonic molecules for you - these babies eat qubits for breakfast, if you allow them to entangle with the QE container infrastructure.' 'Not that we are not grateful,' Rick asks, 'but why not just decohere the whole system?' 'Hah. Then the QE infrastructure will know it has been compromised and will reset. You wouldn't want that to happen, right? These will instead create a massive cross-entanglement with my own rig over there' - he points at the horribly modded quantum computer floating in a liquid helium bath. 'The Jovian High Command C3I system will be under my control for entire *seconds*. More than enough time to have some real fun...'

Guilty. I'm the resident "Santa Claus does *NOT EXIST!!!*" guy.

A related but different
A related but different phenomenon is these photonic molecules: http://arxiv.org/ftp/arxiv/papers/1207/1207.1274.pdf They are more like metamaterials and quantum dots, tiny cavities that trap photons and make them behave strangely.

But only so long as you keep his wavefunction collapsed by observing his non-existence. Sooner or later you will blink...
