Newbie Questions
Something came up at character generation. "Can skills complement combat skills?" I'm unsure right now, as all the samples are a knowledge skill complementing a non-combat skill. That's the same case in Transhuman's "optimizing characters" section. Could Perception or Academic: Physics be complementing Beam or Kinetic Weapons. Or perhaps Hardware: Robotics give a bonus when shooting/stabbing robots and synths?

There are no rules governing
There are no rules governing this, except that it's at the GM's discretion. This means that it's up to the individual group to determine whether you can. That said, knowing lots about physics will not really help you point a laser beam at someone to kill them more effectively in the heat of battle.

All right. I'll talk with em,
All right. I'll talk with em, but I'm thinking no. The physics was meant for something like the newer sherlock holmes movies and zero g, like calculating tossing a granade using corners and such.

Most combat skills gets
Most combat skills gets enough bonuses anyway like smartlink and aiming, so you don't really need linked skills for them.

Yes combat skills can be
Yes combat skills can be complimented by knowledge skills. The Wrecker profession in Transhuman is a pretty good example. Profession: Small unit Tactics can compliment initiative Interest: Spaceship Models can compliment Gunnery Profession: Security Admin can compliment infosec intrusions Academics: Anatomy could compliment a blade weapons attack On the other hand there are unlimited situations where these skills are not so much complimentary but necessary for a character to accomplish a task. For instance a character probably needs some knowledge of exotic morphology and anatomy to effectively battle some of the weird new morphs in gatecrashing or transhuman that they've never seen before. If it seems to unbalance your game or players try to abuse the complimentary skill mechanic you can try any of several alternate rules. 1. Instead of complimentary skills adding a automatic bonus, demand a complimentary skill check and use the MOS/MOF as a modifier to the activity roll. This one works well for me because: A; it gives players a reason to actively roll dice on a knowlege skill which doesn't happen often otherwise. B; it keeps PC's from relying on a modicum of familiarity for an automatic +10 bonus. C; it empowers non combat characters during stressful situations. 2. Complimentary skills only come into effect when there is a negative modifier that the knowledge might mitigate. For me this rule does a good job of simulating that Intrest:exotic morphology really does help the first time your character has to fist fight an octopus when they would have a negative modifier for being unfamiliar but doesn't really help a character line up that headshot on a ruster. I also reccomend these rules when your players realize that they can use their muse for teamwork bonuses on virtually everything.

Mea Culpa: My mode of speech can make others feel uninvited to argue or participate. This is the EXACT opposite of what I intend when I post.

I like both of them, but
I like both of them, but number 2 seems fastest and less likely to be abused. It's a pbp game, and I only know two of the players, so I dunno about the rest just yet.

I am somewhat reminded of
I am somewhat reminded of this awesome example: http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0808.html As a GM, I am happy to allow it *when the situation warrants*. Yes, Mr ninja surgeon knows a lot about where the organs are, but that doesn't mean he always gets a good opportunity to stab diagonally at the L2 level into the right renal artery. Sometimes they get to use the complementary skill MOS as a bonus, sometimes just to remove negative modifiers, sometimes just to allow them to do something really unusual. (Using Kinetic Weapons as a complement for Physics in order to fly using recoil was a fun case).
