First weekend in ocotber

I just found out about EP and am really looking forward to it. There's a major convention I attend annually in the first weekend of october. Will EP be available before then so it might be at the convention's hucksters? If so I'll plan to get it there. If it's going to be available before the con by a while I might get it before the con.

Just a really crazy idea

Just a really crazy idea here, you know, the kind of whacko stuff only a gamer is crazy enough to consider: They're saying that the book's release date depends on whether or not "the boat" gets it here in time. I assume "the boat" is bringing it in from some asian country where kids work in sweatshop factories for starvation wages instead of going to school or anything. Well -and I know this is really crazy now- maybe if people had the books printed in some western country, like the ones most of the writers and players live in, where they have decent wages, child labor protection laws, etc. you wouldn't have to wait on "the boat" to get it here from some third world sweatshop printer, knowhudahmsane? Asides from not hgaving to be shipped from ghawd knows where, printing the books in a england or america might have other positive side effects too, like, say, supporting the economies of and creating jobs in countries where most of the players and writers live, and have standards of living that most of the above would like to have instead of hurting those countries economies, eliminating jobs in them and driving down the standards of living of people in them until they reach the third world level. Also, the moral aspect here is that you're not supporting child labor and the exploitation of children if you have the books printed in the west, see? Of course I know this is all a lot of socialist/communist/anti capitalist drivel that will be mocked, scorned and sneered at. Gotta save that big 1/2 cent on each copy, and as to the weakening of advanced societies that ban exploitative child labor and the strengthening of less advanced societies that do exploit children, hey, that's capitalism, baby! Low wages rule! Woo Hoo! Of course eventually if this sort of thing keeps on going the standards of living in the west will be lowered to match those in these third world countries for most people, and most gamers will no longer be able to afford to buy the damn books no matter how little they cost, but hey, that's tomorrow. Can't let that interfere with saving that big 1/2 cent per copy today!

Maybe you need to dial back the rants a little and ditch the victim complex as well, especially given the repeated warnings you were given (and ignored) to stop bitching about RPG.net, etc. It wasn't the first time you'd been spoken to, after all, by myself or other mods. Besides, if it's happening with this sort of regularity, maybe it's not the other folks who are to blame, eh? If you can't control yourself, and slam and snipe all the time, you can't then expect folks to take you seriously or put up with you. Finally, in all seriousness, you got banned from a couple of forums. Big deal. Most folks would just get on with life, not waste time sniping, insulting, etc. ad nauseum, and claiming the banning (wasn't it a multiple banning at RPG.net?) as a badge of honour (while simultaneously being obviously far more aggrieved than being banned from a forum would ever realistically warrant). - Colin

EP is indeed being printed in Asia -- in Thailand, in fact, with a company known as Sirivatana. This is a large, well-known printing company with American offices, who work with a number of gaming companies. Though no one from CatLabs has visited them directly, they come recommended and are known as a non-sweatshop printer. While we are taking the word of others on this -- and I suppose the word of Google, which tuns up nothing negative and in fact a few positive comments on the company -- I think it's a mistake (and frankly a bit of a prejudicial one) to automatically assume that any company originating from Asia is a sweatshop with bad labor/business practices. Sure, for all I know, they dump all of their printing chemicals in the local river. Then again, the printer down the street here in Chicago probably screws over his workers too. Just because he's American doesn't mean he's principled or more ecologically-minded. It's the high and privileged American standard of living, in combination with American-led globalization, that creates the sort of economic conditions that make printing overseas more economical anyway.

As to the economics -- printing overseas can be a far larger difference than 1/2 cent a copy. I've seen quotes that beat $1 difference a copy, or totaled to 50% of the cost it would be to print in the states or Canada. In this biz, with its amazingly-low profit margins and companies going under left and right, that's significant.

While I suppose I should offer congratulations to you two for kicking off the first salvo in these forums, I am stepping in and killing this thread before it develops into a flame war.

To be clear: the initial post in this thread was fine, even the politics and the criticism of CatLabs. But I sincerely doubt anyone else on this board gives a shit about what happens on other forums and we don't need to be involved in peoples' past histories or petty personal bickering. So cut it out already.

(And in case anyone's wondering, my mod policy for the future is that people that act inappropriately will get one, and only one warning. Do it again after that and I'll cut you from the forums. I just don't have the time or patience to deal with people not acting like mature adults.)
