Does your personal Muse back up from a recovered Cortical Stack
One of my characters just got killed in our last session and has to be backed up from his recovered stack. Does his personalized Muse also back up or is he going to be stuck with a new off the shelf Muse.

While the rules don't say
While the rules don't say that it does, a cortical stack probably backs up a number of important data files so you are not at a terrible loss when you get revived from a cortical stack. This should include your muse as it manages a lot for you, such as your to do list, managing where your files are stored, etc. A muse is also an infomorph, so it isn't hard to keep a daily backup of it on an ecto you keep at home.

Yeah, this is likely what
Yeah, this is likely what people want, so software saves are likely part of the stack. Some old models might leave it out (if you need it for a plot), but I expect many to have it as default. Your muse is part of your exoself. Not backing it up is like backing up only some parts of your brain.

Thanks for the help
That is what we decided to go with. Just couldn't find a rule on it. Thanks

Not too long ago, if I recall
Not too long ago, if I recall correctly, a thread on these forums went a little off-topic and ended up discussing cognitive enhancing tools. It was argued that things like Google, Wikipedia, and cell phones really change the way we think, and not having them can leave us in awkward positions. Those who lived without such technologies at some point in their lives might be able to switch back to the old ways (though they probably would not be happy about it), but those who lived without such technologies might be confused as to what to do if they suddenly deprived of their known way of life. It could be considered the equivalent of someone accustomed to going to stores to buy food, but then learning they must now grow and hunt their own food. They are not likely to do well at first... and it would likely take time and energy from doing things they are good at.

Yes, your muse travels along
Yes, your muse travels along with your backups, be it in your stack or as part of your insurance. I can't quote chapter & verse from Core on this, but at any rate, that's how I've always run it. Characters can also choose to back up their muse separately. Also, your muse is not part of your core persona -- meaning you don't automatically get it back if, say, you're resleeved by someone who decides not to give it back to you. Finally, worth noting that during a normal, voluntary egocast or resleeving, all software moves with the character. In some cases you might not have the capacity to run it on arrival, though. E.g., if the character was relying on a ghostrider module to run a second, non-muse AI, they'd retain a copy of it but might not have a place to actually run it in their new body.

Still haven't found the rule as written
That is the way we ran it. Looked back through the books but still haven't found where it says this. We thought about not being an option from a recovered cortical stack backup just to make temporary death even more traumatic but decided against it. Might stick the party with new muses as a plot point at some point.

It's not spelled out in the rules, but it is heavily implied in the core book opening fiction, Lack. When Sava 'comes back online' in the resleeving facility, her muse Carveza is with her, and has the same missing time.

muse for prison inmates
I would also venture that inmate aren't given their normal muse, but one designed to warden them as much as assist them, and will rat them out, if they do something illegal during their incarceration (either in physical jails, punitive indenture or arrest simulspace Such muse would also serve a guidance/review. I'd think law enforcement are given the same kind of mandatory add-on for their own muse (like in Continuum, when Keira Cameron got reviewed by her own implant following her assault on the federal agent who was taunting her about Section 6)

Multi Muse backups
Found this is the main rulebook. "Most people keep multiple backups of their muse, because the loss of a muse can be almost as traumatic as the death of a loved one."
