Robots and Gun Turrets
Hello, I am interested in what people do on stations, etc for Gun turrets? Im interested in: - what they would look like? (holes in walls? drop down guns? sliding portals?, tough Synths with weaponry run by AI's?) - what weaponry they might be typically used with? (probably just core rule std weapons)... - what companies would produce them ("Direct Action's Self Sustaining Automated Defense Systems"?) What do you do for defense systems? Regards Jason B

It's basically a standard gun, fitted in a mount, frequently concealed behind armor or on a robot. Mechanically all you need to know is they have a skill no higher than 40, but when it comes to what it's placed on and where it swings, the sky is the limit. You're only restricted by common sense.

Generally, I work under the assumption that most defense weapons on stations don't use traditional projectiles. The risk for hull breach is higher, and it is a waste of materials, which are often in limited supply. So most turrets in my games are pulsers. The typical security protocol is to isolate intruders and their current location from the rest of the habitat (hopefully while getting all inhabitants out of that area as well). From there, it's rapid decompression as all air is pulled out of that area, hopefully suffocating the intruder (if they fall unconscious, recompression gradually occurs and security personnel are given access to the area to detain the offender). If that doesn't work, a wall opens to outer space and pulser turrets open fire and try to eject the target from the habitat.

Is it internal or exterior?
Jason B, Im wondering what you & this thread topic are asking about Is it? *internal defenses & enforcements (for example against scoops, espionage, hostiles & criminals). * external defenses (for example against hostile ships, debris, gravel, asteroids etc ) various forms of direct energy weapons. * both.

Theres a picture on the EP
Theres a picture on the EP inspiration Art thread on another forum (29+ pages?) that I pinterested... Its got a automated turret in a corridor and I havent seen any desription in any book.... But realistically it could just be a flexbot with a few weapons, manned by a AI or AGI.... I think I will use that or a similar synthmorph with Tough Traits (if required) for defense of systems... I usually use armored hulls (panopticon?) for external station hulls so I dont think the risk of breach is that bad for low/medium calibre weapons (kinetic). Railguns are worse internally, sure, but turrets would shoot bios and synthmorphs pretty accurately. IIRC, AI has 40 skill, +10 for smartlink, +10 for second shot in SA mode, then add +10 if using Zero ammo, so an AI turret has a good chnace of hitting intruders...

If the players are actually
If the players are actually flying in on a ship or skimmer, I like to have a kill-sat network in place about a kilometer out from the station, along with some turrets on the station itself. It feels a bit more futuristic and flexible than just turrets. Plus it opens up a new strategic layer for the players with a hacker in the group or a new challenge for a pilot or zero-g combat expert... Do you try to hack one or more sats to open a hole in the grid while still out or radio range of the station? Do you run-n-gun or try to rely on ECM? I had a player hack the kill-sat network from within the station after arrival and slip in a back-door command-word trigger that, when spoken on the local mesh, would erase the friend-or-foe configurations and make the station itself a threat. You know... just in case.
