Ok, thiking about forking on another thread made me think of examples of how and when forking could help and when it wouldn't. I decided to use an example that we're all familiar with, star trek. Suppose we have the enterprise, and it gets attacked by some strange alien vessel with new technologies and weapons no one's seen before. It gets shot up pretty b ad but survives. Now in normal circumstances we assume no forking is needed as the ship's normal crew does all the jobs required, but now we have a badly shot up ship and lots of wounded crew. Ok, so we fork scotty about 10 times. Now one can work on the port nacelle, one can work on the starboard nacelle, one can work on the impulse engines, one can work on the shields, one can work on the phasers, another can fix the photon torpedo tubes and a few more can do general structural repairs. Hey, pretty great there! Those scotty forks really help out in a crisis. Now we may assume we havbe a lot of wounded crew. So we fork mccoy a few times and suddenly instead of a 50/1 patient/doctor ratio we have maybe a 5/1 ratio. Well, that's great! Now we come to mr. spock. Well, I suppose if we fork him a few times one can analyze the alien ship's weapons, one can analyze the alien's shields and another can analyze the alien power source while maybe another one helps with repairs. Since the enterprise is one ship, forking sulu, the helmsman, won't do much good since only one guy can steer the ship though, so maybe no sulu forks unless the ship separates sections, then one sulu can fly each section. Checkov is the ship's gunnery officer, so maybe forking him does little good in most cases unless you want one to fire the phasers and one to fire the photon torpedoes. As to kirk, does forking him do anything? Not unless you need someone to run the ship while another kirk bangs some alien 'ho. ;) I kid. Seriously, unless the situation called for an away team action while the ship needed a captain, then you could f0rk kirk and have him lead the away team and command the enterprise, forking him adds little to the situation. See how forking sometimes is great and sometimes just not as useful, and maybe sometimes not useful at all? Hope this helps...
