Back in 2009 the Eclipse Phase writers mentioned that they planned on including a metaplot in the RPG.
Now that it's 2012, with 5 big sourcebooks, 4 adventures, and plenty of in-game fiction, what substantial developments have been made to the over-arching setting?
Possibilities:
The Ultimate x-threat: In Rimward, it's revealed that Firewall is concerned about the Ultimate faction, specifically its control over 2 Pandora Gates and its emphasis on Social Darwinism. The avocation of the elimination of "genetrash" and "transhumanity's chaff" can give rise to purges, while the desire to improve upon human nature as much as possible is frightfully close to some exhuman goals. The difference is that the Ultimates wish to maintain their free will and not be enslaved to some TITAN group mind, but that may matter little to bioconservatives and suspicious Firewall agents.
Firewall fears that the Ultimates might use the Pandora Gates to assume strategical dominance, or eventually become an exhuman cult. This might lead to future conflicts between the two groups.
TITAN Plans: The TITANS' motives as a whole are incomprehensible to transhumanity, but revelations in Gatecrashing might shed some light on possible end results. The inhabitants of Brak Kodel are uploaded egos of people captured by the TITANS during the Fall. The exoplanet comes off as some kind of experiment/competition, where the inhabitants were put through all kinds of morphs and forking operations as part of some kind of "survival of the fittest" procedure. The transhuman tribes on this planet revere the TITANS as deities.
Judging from what little we know of this exoplanet, the TITANS responsible for this project might either wish to dominate transhumanity and make them into servants, want to "improve" transhumanity by "weeding out" the tribes, or using some form of psychological warfare to shatter morale.
I'd be interested in hearing about your own speculations as well!
