Hi. I wanted to talk a little bit about kickstarter. For those you who don't know, kickstarter is some website that allows people to start projects, which are basically donation runs. The people who make a project tries to sell their projects, and the people who visit the site can decide if a project is worth supporting. These donation runs only last for a set period of time. If the money isn't there at the donation run's end, the project is simply cancelled. Kickstarter projects may offer rewards to backers who commit to certain levels of funding.
The kickstarter website claims their strong point is, backers are only charged if there is enough money being offered by backers when the time runs out. This eliminates the possibility that a donation run has only collected a fraction of the funds it is asking. The project starters are saved from some of the traditional problems caused by trying to get donations through other means. These problems include trying to finish a project it only has a fraction of the funding it needs, and dealing with donators who want a finished project whose money you have.
As a person who hates DRM used by many companies, but also hates the software pirates who steal software from companies (because it gives the said companies an excuse to try to protect their products with DRM), I feel a bit relieved that things that might be able to do better do show up in these no man's land of the internet. Kickstarter is one of these things. With kickstarter, many developers can try to sell a product to backers, and the backers can decide how much they are willing to pay (collectively) to ensure that developers produce products or services they like. While many of these game companies often have "DRM free" as one of their selling points, I would like to point out that it provides a means for game companies to try to make games with original ideas, instead of sticking to proven concepts. They can set the prices of what they think would be worth their while, and if they get the needing funding, then they may forge ahead.

A few projects that might interest you guys.
A project to make a new, cheaper but reliable space suits.
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/872281861/final-frontier-designs-3g-...
Some the rewards that are offered to backers is parts of a functional space suit. If you have deep pockets and are willing to offer to back $10k, you can get a finished space suit sized just for you.
Also, at the time of writing, it has less than 3 days to go before the project is finished.
Star Command
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/starcommand/star-command-kickstart-p...
This is a game being made for the PC/MAC that plays on the themes of star trek and other science fictions. It involves you as the player designing a ship, hiring a crew, and make other preparations before venturing forth. I think its worth checking out.
Skyjacker
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/digitilus/al-skyjacker?ref=category
This is a space game the developers are calling grand theft auto in space. The game play involves a base ship that other modules may be added to, and some of these modules may provide more slots to add new modules. Suffice to say, you are supposed to be able to make a big ship that you can go fly around in, assuming you can blow up ships to get the needed parts. The developers are asking for money to help pay for the costs to make the game polished.
While the project was originally a 60 day project, its time is nearly up and still hasn't passed the halfway point. They have been asking backers to spread the word so that they may get the funding needed so they can finish their game.

Re: Talking about Kickstarter
Very good idea and something worth pursuing. Don't abandon the thread and maybe we will soon have more EP Kickstarters!

I found another kickstarter project that some of you guys might be interested in.
Shadowrun Online
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1964352341/shadowrun-online
Given that the original concept for Eclipse Phase was developed back when some of the devs used to work for Catalyst Game Labs, the people who makes Shadowrun, I thought I this might be worth mentioning.

I've been debating as whether
I've been debating as whether or not to mention this since it is a project for another game line, but its becoming a big deal.
http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1513061270/reaper-miniatures-bones-a...
This kickstarter project was started by Reaper Minis, a company that produces miniature figures for game lines like DnD, Pathfinder, and other game lines. A problem they faced was the slow rate of production of bringing new minis to the market. Instead of doing things gradually, they wanted to do a kickstarter project to get the funding needed to get what they wanted to do in the next few decades done a lot sooner. Their initial goal was $ 30k, but people keep backing them and they kept adding stretch goals. These stretch goals added additional minis to certain pledge levels, and it proved to be a strong incentive for more people to jump aboard. Its become something of a singularity where things keep getting beter, more people jump aboard, and then the next stretch goal is reached adding more incentives jump aboard. Its backing is now over 2 mil (nearly a 100x times more than what they asked for), so there is a plenty to get at the $100 dollar pledge.
If you think this might be something you are interested in, take a look. Don't wait though, its less than 48 hours before the project ends.

Ok, you got my curiosity and I've given it some thought. I've made my pledge and became a backer.
Best of luck with your project.
