With one of my player i'v discuss about an interesting loop: create an alpha forh that act as the pc and have the "main ego" that constantly monitor it, evry 4 hour merging the 2 and repeat the process the ego know exactly it's own mental process and past evry merging can optimize the workflow of it's own mind, when confident he can begin utilizing more fork for mantain a parallel path of thinking observing multiple possibile strategy and the main ego directing the process chosing the best possibile outcome.
By setting he can do it, with Multiple Personalities or Ghostrider Module + Multi-Tasking: the first 2 can be used for create a compartment for observation that can interact with the acting ego, the second step is utilizing the multi tasking for merging (i know this is a bit strange but even with MP you not gain the extra action for it it's just one of the fork in action, i'v approved the one with GR module as GM for rules but the logic suggest it's possible).
I need some help for figure the effect...
We have choose to use this for trade mental stress for skill (he overtax himself for optimizing performance) and the switch is linked with a Psychosurgery
Test (a silly procedure he have the skilla at 60 and i'v banned the use for improving the skill but it's a GM artifact...), but i can't figure how can give him the bonus for be an ego that wnow exactly it's own structure: how represent comlete mental self awarness?
Is possible we have broken some rule buti don't know..

What's wrong with that set up
What's wrong with that set up? It seems to me that the most philosophically paranoid people would do this in order to preserve the continuity of their 'primary' self anyway.
Of course doing this in many inner-system polities may get you fined/arrested/shot if they find you forking excessively, but there wouldn't be any problems in the outer system. Of course the primary is the one copying itself, so it probably wouldn't need watching since it knows it's own plan, and has the vested interest in maintaining it's own primary self's continuity.
So no need to inflict penalties on the player, if he wants to make more work for himself by constantly having to worry about merging every 4 hours, then it's up to him. It doesn't make him any more or less 'invincible' than just backing up in a regular fashion anyway.

The only mechanical advantage
The only mechanical advantage I can think of is the Teamwork bonuses if (and only if) both egos work at once. Aside from that, I would leave it as a fluff advantage against memetic viruses, basilisk hacks, psychosurgery and fast-talk scams. Making him more prone to resist the effects. Of course, there is the slight possibility of infecting the "surface" ego and then the "inner" one because none of them realize the attack, and since he is so fat and happy with his little setup he will b taken by surprise XD.

How do you monitor yourself?
How do you monitor yourself? Psychosurgery skill?
I would imagine a person doing this might gain mental traumas/Zen enlightenment (quite possibly the same thing). Consider Greg Egan's story "Mister Volition" - monitoring yourself too closely might be bad for your sense of existence.

My problem as GM is that we concord that is a kind of Zen state, today we have agree with Xagroth and he have a +20 for resistence vs basilisk and memetic (rare event) and a +10 for fast talk resistence based on "automatic reaction" by human brain (i chose wen give it :D).
I'm in search for more game mechanics for reward his play, at the table he is very good as act the logic Zen master with existential problems...

No, a psychosurgeon is more
No, a psychosurgeon is more like a programmer for egos. If he doesn't have Profession: Psicology and Profession: Neurology, he doesn't have access to those fields of expertise. He can see if his mind is being tampered with, however. At least, that's how I see it.

I would imagine some sort of
I would imagine some sort of antagonism is going to develop between your instances, which is going to manifest as some very unhealthy psychological tendencies when you merge. If nothing else, the peculiar divergence in your experiences, with one of you doing things under constant surveillance and the other constantly watching himself do things with no control... That's what alienation is all about, and it will only accumulate over time.
And of course, if the active Alpha does become compromised, then it might just take issue with being disposed of. An Alpha fork of yourself is one of the most dangerous things you can fight, and infection by an Exsurgent means she will have the advantage.
I once thought of something kind of like this, as a way to speed up or teamwork mental tasks, while minimizing discontinuity and alienation. It goes like this:
Get a secluded place to work, with all the equipment you need. Make a work schedule for eight hours and for eight people. Find a way to randomize who gets which job (draw lots). Then fork, then fork again, and then a third time. Then, draw a lot.
You now have eight instances of yourself running parallel. Each one of you has a very similar experience, drawing a lot and performing a randomly assigned task. Each one of you has a very similar relationship to all the others, with no one having authority over the others. Conflict and resentment are unlikely to arise. Even if one of you must get a shitty job, she will probably accept that it was fair because, from her own, subjective POV, it was she who delineated and assigned the task.
Hopefully, you'll be able to remain in seclusion for the duration, with no outside influence causing any of you to diverge too far from the others, and everything will be fine.

It's a good idea for teamwork
It's a good idea for teamwork, i'll use it, but we are more interested in exploring the possibility of an human that can "see" ti's own mental proces at work. I admit it's a bit zen but we find it funny and actually the character is in a form of permanent dissociative disorder as side effect, it's a must for the fun of evry session!
PS, the observing ego can't act but control the neutrino caster, if exurgent is involved can use the explosive escape (done last session).

I think the key is to make the experience of each of your forks is as similar as possible, and to keep them from getting into conflicts with one another. That means a stable environment, with as few unknown factors as possible. That way, the merge won't be quite as traumatic.
What you're describing is... The complete opposite of that.
I see a blank character sheet and a calculator in your near future. There's a reason why most Firewall lifeforms go with regular backup insurance and cortical stacks. ;)

But then there are the ones that refuse, and become something else... usually they get top priority from the rest of Firewall. You don't want agents going mad or seed AGI.
(It was intriguing to run the one PC seed AGI I have had: it didn't quite go mad, but it is hard to tell whether it has discovered stuff about The Powers That Be using its superintelligence or is just benevolently delusional. Spending subjective years hacking your own mental software all alone, knowing that the rest of the solar system will destroy you if they find you out, can be somewhat stressful.)

As long as the player is
As long as the player is fully aware that this is not a perfect solution and may make him just as crazy as what he's trying to defend against, and is willing to roleplay that, it sounds like a very interesting way to go.
Now the real question is whether the master ego will be able to tell when the slave's brainstate changes due to natural evolution, such as the incredible self-awareness brought on by this process, and stop itself from pulling the trigger. I hope it has one hell of a psychoanalysis skill to make that determination.

Something like that is
Something like that is probably a quick way to become exhuman, especially if the main ego becomes dissatisfied with some of their fork's actions.
How would main ego feel, seeing its fork doing something questionable, like betraying their partner on the spur of the moment? Or committing an atrocity in battle? Will they want to merge with such fork and accept it as a part of them, or decide that it is not like they would do and someone had obviously tampered with it? Isn't it a great idea to drive one's evolution by merging only the forks that behave nobler than the original one would? And why stop at that, if they could just correct aberrant forks a bit, making them better people?
You probably see where this is going. Of course, for this particular character it may be a feature, not a bug.

I'm intrigued by the way
I'm intrigued by the way people seem to think about forks and the way they work. I would love to play that out at the table, if one of my players tried it. : )
"I make a fork, to jam those gun drones and help us escape."
"Okay, what are you doing?"
"I make a fork, and tell it to get in my Ecto."
"You fork. There's now an exact copy of you sharing your system, and it tells you to move yourself onto the Ecto. It has absolutely no regard for your volition or well-being, it expects absolute compliance from you, and you know it intends to sacrifice you to the Exsurgents to cover its escape. Take... 11 Stress, and roll an opposed WIL times 3."

That's an excellent idea. I would just make the fork rebel, but this is far more elegant. And every player stupid enough to use his alpha (or even beta) fork as a meatshield deserves this and more.

You can use forks for all
You can use forks for all kinds of things, but you have to consider carefully how to go about it. When you Alpha fork, you become two instances, who both experience the exact same subjective continuity. Whatever you were thinking immediately before forking, both of you are now going to be thinking the exact same thing. So if you think about it like you're making a copy of yourself, then both of you will consider itself to be the real you, and the other to be a mere copy, and conflict will ensue.
I had an example earlier in this thread of how to use mass-forking to complete extended tasks. I think the chief concern is to get the expectations of all of the forks to fit together.
The simplest way is to just settle for a Beta fork. Prepare a pruned version of yourself ahead of time, which expects to serve you and is happy to do so, and then instantiate named and numbered copies as often as you need to. But if you really need those Alpha-level skills, then there's no such thing as "a copy of me."

This is a powerplayer view, for this kind of work my hacker have a tailored Beta, with a couple of patch for removal of self preservation instinct and an obsessive compulsive disorder (fanatic) for preservation of main ego...
the Alpha forks are more a way to be in two place at the same time:
"Before go to this Firewall risky mission i make a fork and send him to venus resort for give me cover for my absence"
"You fork. There's now an exact copy of you that is going to make an extremely important mission with good chance to die, in the meaning you must have fun at resort and make sure everyone see you enjoing it"
The merging is a bit more problematic but by rules , as described for Multi Tasking, short time alpha forks merge without problem (seem before 4 hours is ok). Pax Familia is even a more extreme exemple of this kind of work, evry fork is considered as a separate person but regulary merge for uniform the mindset and memory, EP is very open to this kind of play, as GM i feel i must balance the possibility with rational limits and reward players that explore the tranhuman dilemmas without overpower them...
Forks are the most powerful resource given by setting to player, they scared me for how fast can be made and how powerful a player using them can be, a clone war at my door. With a little talk with my player i'v banned some of the most extreme possibilities reserving them as plot devices or , like in this tread, for character concept fine tuning.

This is probably a good place
This is probably a good place to ask: how do you handle forks, especially alphas? How do you decide which one would be normally played and which one to handle as a NPC? Sometimes it's a no-brainer - in the example with the resort, it's quite obvious that the player will get the one on the mission. But considering another example - one fork doing one thing, the original ego something else - do you have any preferences, or just go with the gut feeling?

I personally handle forks
I personally handle forks onthe base of their use, if a fork is used for only a few roll (as for short term hack or as decoy) it's only a tool, for roleplay the remaning forks i use the gut: if i feel my player use forks for take too time for himself i cut the action and make him roll for results.
Another use i give is use a fork for XP use, if a player want take skill that requide training during adventure i let them make a fork that learn the skill, during offtime he can merge (psicosurgery roll + automatic 1 stress point), this solve the problem of training times and the too sudden powerup that i always feel unrealistic.
