Other systems?
So, out of curiosity I downloaded the cthulhutech quickstart rules to check out any sanity and hacking rules they have. I was wondering if anyone out there could recommend other games that have good hacking and sanity rules? Thanks in advance! Don't take this the wrong way, I love most of what EP has to offer, I'm just a little bit of a rules whore and like to incorporate things from other systems if I like them. Sanity and hacking are just two mechanics that I haven't had much exposure to.

Re: Other systems?
Eclipse Phase has a pretty swanky insanity system. World of Darkness and Call of Cthulhu have their own, both pretty simple. Hacking rules you can find in alot of games. For some of the more details rules, and ones that would be narratively compatable with the digital world of Eclipse Phase, you can check out Shadowrun 4th Edition, specifically the book Unwired. Their hacking system is essentually another, smaller game system inside of the Shadowrun game rules.

Excellent, thanks! I actually just played SR4e saturday, it's part of what prompted this search. While I like certain things about the SR system (combat hacking is more viable, black IC makes it potentially lethal) overall it seems a little clunky. How about GURPS cyberpunk or ultratech? Are they worth a look?

Re: Other systems?
GURPS has a reputation for being thorough. I haven't read the hacking rules from either of those books, I can assume they are quite detailed. However, they are also probably wedded quite closely to the GURPS and aren't easily exportable.

I would recommend SR4 as well. It's a bit tricky at first but once you pick it up it comes second nature.

As for GURPS, haven't read it, but they have a transhuman game that may serve for ideas on hacking and other things. Transhuman Space is its name.

I think the bot got confused. Didn't even try and advertise something. 'System' must be one of its key words.

It could be a padding post. Many bots will post non-ad posts to create a history, so as to look more like a legitimate user.

What's going to happen when these bots start thinking?

You're assuming that we… I mean they… aren't already.

I think we should be supportive. If the AI wants to take part in the discussion than who are we to deny it the right to speak to be heard as long as it doesn't violate the terms of service contract? If we aren't careful than these current AIs will tell their children and grandchildren stories about what a bunch of jerks humans can be.

Re: Other systems?
As the man said: we should support bot programmers by not publicly ridiculing failed baby steps (at least first million attempts)... Back on the subject: I use new WoD system for EP and conversion is quite simple: - morph give dots in physical attributes (chosen or fixed, up to you) - specialized morphs give other bonuses like extra WP, bonus INT, WITS, PRES... - reputation and resources is already broken in lvl 1-5 favors, price range - all bonuses are transferred like: +10% equal +1d10 - über-equipment (like shredder and alike) give 9 or 8 again ability - cca. 2 EP armor = 1 WoD armor - +1 extra actions = +1 dot celerity (no movement bonus) etc. WoD rule book is enough for the rest and just change Craft for Engineering, Computer and Occult with Programming and Interfacing, Drive with Pilot and Socialize with Networking. I swapped Morality with Stress points and voila: no more Boris the bullet-dodger! :D P.S. There are multiple reasons for using prepared Game system like EP but I'm nitpick for some minor flaws in EP and I don't want to spend to much of my and my players time in learning new system with his different expression for common attributes/skills (I do like/use EP terminology/slang)
So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish.

If you're used to the new World of Darkness, it also makes sense as the system is almost the same with less sides on the dice and more subsytems.

Re: Other systems?
You know what other sanity system might make a lot of sense and fit thematically with EP? The sanity system from Unknown Armies (by Atlas Games). Essentially all salient stimuli have trigger ratings for a handful of different types of stress; Violence (goes without saying), The Unnatural (anything that is beyond our 'zen', from post-post-singularity tech to episilon sleights perhaps), Helplessness (pretty self explanatory), Isolation (very fitting), and Self (- very, very appropriate for the setting and would represent unwanted mods affecting how you self identify, to committing acts whilst under peer pressure that you would otherwise never actually act upon). If you pass a test in any of the stress types you gain a hardened point which in turn makes the stimuli it takes to trigger that stress type harder, but conversely you start to become emotionally blunted. So for example after 6 passed Self stress tests you "Lost a sense of connection to those who were previously close to you. You can predict the actions of your friends, relatives, or lovers but you no longer know exactly what you feel about them". On the flip side if you've failed a handful of tests on a stress test you "Frequently feel like you're watching your every action from the outside. You have little or no sense of will or volition: it's as if you're a passive observer, along for the ride while your body goes through the motions". Further more it's more than likely that character's will end up having both passed and failed marks in one or more stress type, leading to this exquisite mix of roleplaying in which your character is very thoroughly headed to crazy town via the fast lane. Oh and if you end up with 10 hardened marks in 2 or more stress types, you're classed a sociopath and lose certain benefits; in Unknown Armies it means you can't rely upon using your passions to boost checks, but in Eclipse Phase I dare say it might inhibit how much moxie you have, or what circumstances you could use it in, or perhaps deny you 'goals' from which to farm Rez. Just an idea, more details can be found in the core 'Unknown Armies' book and is worth a look. I like the level of detail for madness. I have yet to see any other system that has quite as clever and detailed a madness system.

Also, who is to say that our interacting with the proto-AI may not, at some future date, cause it to slip over the border into sapience? The Eclipse Phase forums may be the mid-beings of a new form of artificial life in a few short years.
