EP (and other game books) on a tablet.
Greetings all, If this topic has been covered, please let me know and direct me to it. The search tool didn't reveal anything. Now that the tablet market seems to be becoming really attractive with regards to performance/price (bang for buck, etc.), I was wondering if anyone is using a tablet to access their EP (specifically and others more generally) gamebooks? I am eyeing one of the 7" tablets now that there seems to be something going on in that division, and was wondering how the books render or present themselves for the purpose of readability and consumption without difficulty and eyestrain. Especially for gaming, tablets seem the optimum way to manage gaming materials (very handy when you are at the table). Any thoughts? Cheers!!

I use my Nook Color to handle my books, and I must say that it isn't bad. Granted, it could be better, and the apps on the Nook Color tend to have problems on some pages (especially when there are charts or large images present), but otherwise it works well. Readability is good, and pinch-to-zoom makes any clarity problems moot as you can get a close up when needed. I imagine that an unlocked device or broad-functionality tablet would have better programs to use.

Thank you, that sounds very positive. I went to the local yellow tag, and held a Fire in my hand, and it looks pretty good. Now, just to wait to see what happens with things when the product hits the shelves. :-)

I don't know, I think a 7" tablet would be too small to read an Eclipse Phase book without a lot of panning and zooming, which gets old really quick. The new iPad has a much larger display and is high enough resolution that PDFs look like print, and you can read an entire EP page without any zooming. Get the iPad

Also have an iPad, although mine is still an iPad2. The resolution is just fine for me, I can read Eclipse Phase pages at the default zoom (verticle fit) just fine. It is quick as hell, EP books tend to be very well optimised to loading times are minimal. I like it a lot. I agree that 7" would be too small for me. Go to an apple store, try one out.

Things may have improved a lot lately with tablets, however depending on price a good laptop will still outperform it. I have an Acer Iconia A500 (so one of the first generations with the tegra 2 cpu etc), and it suffered a bit with the PDFs, in particular searching, and suffers horrendously with pdf versions of the Dark Heresy and Pathfinder books. Also, spreadsheets such as the excellent character creation ones available for EP don't work too well on it. I've gotten myself a little Ultrabook from HP lately which is seriously quick, and handles it all fine. Touchscreens are a bit annoying for typing notes etc quickly, but a bluetooth keyboard helps alleviate that problem. Your mileage may vary of course :)

I own the EP rulebook in hard copy (1st edition rules), but I play the game exclusively with all the pdfs on my iPad.

I'm going to be banned for this... XD I use a low-end 2 years old BQ Darwin with Android 2.3 (a custom version, since the company stopped taking care of that model long ago). It has an 8'' resistive screen (that is, use your nails or something like the Game Boy's pencils), and while it is a little slow, I can read the books quite well. The only trick, which should work with a 7'' tablet (like the Nexus 7, for example) is to place the device horizontal and read up to down. Not ideal for game consulting, of course, but the search function should help a great deal. That being said, if you are carrying stuff for the game, a 10'' tablet will be better, and you will be using a backpack anyway (dice, pencils, paper, etc...), so the main advantage of the smaller tablets (portability) is not really relevant. Personally, when I have to carry a backpack I use my 10'' notebook computer directly.

I use a Kindle Fire for my EP books, and it works fine. Default size is readable (except for the white-on-black text, but that might just be my old eyes), and the pages render quick. Zooming is quick and easy.
