Ship, habitat names

I just came across the Wikipedia page for The Eight Eccentrics of Yangzhou and realized it would make a great name for a ship. Just before that I was looking at the Chain of Pappus, which might be a good leather bar for mathematicians. Often it is hard to come up with good names on the fly, so I usually pick a few ahead of time and add to a list on my laptop. 1.- Select a Sci-Fi military franchise (for example, David Weber's Honorverse) 2.- Check the naming policies. 3.- Profit. I did just that for my Star Trek Online ship collection. My Mvamm (Prometheus kind of ship, the one that turns into three) is the USS Hexapuma, my Odyssey (a really sexy cruiser) is the USS Nike, and my Galaxy-X/Dreadnought (3-nacelled Enterprise from the All Good Things TNG episode, the one with cannons, a phaser spinal cannon and cloack cruiser) is the USS Manticore. The USS Monarch is a little diluted (Sovereign class cruiser, but there is actually a Monarch-class cruiser in the game), and I don't use it... Oh, and I named my first ship, the light cruiser, USS Gauntlet, while my Centaur-class was the USS Fearless... Yeah, I mixed the class & names, but when I fly the Hexapuma, people who knows, knows :p

In my opinion, there's no better random name/idea genarator than Wikipedia. A scum barge I've used in my campaign was called "Wade's Boat". I see ship names to be anything and everything possible. Scum would change ship names all the time as ownership passed from scum to scum to hypercorp and back again. I see them to be very malleable and the latest Captain might name it after himself, or after something he happens to like on that particular day. Since ship registration and license plates are not really relevant in the time of EP, a ship is called whatever its Captian or crew want it to be. Being free from paper work and governments, anarchy rules. That includes names. Oro.

That's very true, which can mean having to come up with new ship names at random times. Recently for a scum fleet (where there were a large number of small vessels and towed structures) I co-opted song titles for a few, although most had pretty "normal" names such as "Annie's Skiff" or "The Big Green One". It was good source "on the fly".
