Yeah, EP is up this week. If I recall, this session starts right after the last one; Faiun and Bartelby are barely alive and fleeing via the Lunar hopper towards Nectar. Gerard and a new player also join the group in this game. It should be up today or tomorrow, depending on the whims of Clockworkjoe.
I am turbs excite for this, as the last ep was definitely one of my favorites. It still amazes me how you brought this whole campaign together. I just start GMing EP for my group (hooray!) but I've mostly been running one-shots as the idea of running a campaign in the setting a still a wee bit intimidating to me. Know Evil definitely gives me some ideas, though!

Re: Actual Play Campaign at RPPR: Know Evil
In this episode, the Firewall team must regroup after barely surviving a deadly battle with a powerful group of exsurgents, but they will have little time before they must continue their mission. Gerrad finally rejoins the group with a new agent, an ultimate named Maxwell. They are in Nectar, a lunar city divided by morph type. Biomorphs are the elite while the poor must use robotic bodies to work and get around. These class distinctions have created an incendiary atmosphere, and it’s only a matter of time before someone lights the fuse. Can the team stop the riots and find out the next clue to Know Evil? http://actualplay.roleplayingpublicradio.com/2012/04/genre/horror/eclips...

I only seem to be getting the first quarter (~1 hour and 4 minutes) of the recording of episode 10. Is anyone else having that problem? edit: I got it fixed, so nevermind. It is sounding good so far.

Hey there you RPPR dudes! Loving the AP (long time listener to the show, and listened to the D&D4E from start to end), every time I listen to it I want to play Eclipse Phase and I'm currently planning a game loosely based on the movie "Pandorum"! What I want to know is, are there any plans to publish "Know Evil", even as a ransom item on the RPPR site? Because if you are I would be seriously interested! Keep up the good work, and I'm now off to download Episodes 5 to 10 of the AP!!! ;-)

Having said it before and am willing to say it again. I'll happily pay for a good game writeup of Know Evil. Also When is the next episode going up?

@ Leofric1313, Gorkamorka, Xagroth Thanks! I'm glad you guys are enjoying the games. I'm putting up a kickstarter for some Cthulhu scenarios soon (No Security: Horror Scenarios in the Great Depression). I'm just waiting on a few more pieces of art so I can edit the trailer. I'll put a link on the forums as soon as it is up. If that project meets and there seems to be some demand, I'd like to start a ransom-funded game line. We would be on an annual schedule (I teach for a living), but the goal would be to set up a project every summer. If this first foray sees some success, Know Evil would be a shoo-in for the next project. Of course, I'd want to talk to the EP guys first. I'm crazy about their game and would never want to step on toes. But if they are cool with it, I'd love to put out a campaign supplement as a printable PDF. Hell, I've got a three-ring binder full of stuff already: it would probably be easier than this current project. Anyway, I'll let you guys know what is going on when the kickstarter goes up. Thanks for the kind words and support.

Man, you and your crew are awesome! I enjoyed their jokes & references, your players remind me so much of my players it is hilarious. As a chronic GM (I just can't seem to cure it ;) I can relate with players attention span of wine flies. While GM is (trying to) explain some scene half a group is talking. Actually I don't mind this anymore because 5 minds can, and often do, bring something unexpected, funny and sometimes, just sometimes we create those unforgettable moments when everyone is totally immersed in story and we are having the time of our... (month, year ;) Anywho, I'm really sorry for all those lost game sessions where we cried from laughter, had great time but didn't recorded them (dust in the wind and all that jazz...). Doing it so now is not so great idea because Croatian is understood in 3 small countries. Enough melancholy: I'm very glad you guys posted this campaign and I intend to enjoy listening to them all. Thnax again for great game!

Know Evil updated! After the epicness of the last two episodes, It will be interesting to see how this one will compare. It is hard to believe that there are like thirty more of these coming down the pipeline, eventually, but I'll hold out for them. I just hope the Fall doesn't happen first.

Yes, we are finally back on air. Below is the description of Episode 11 and the link. After the chaos of the Robot Uprising in Nectar, the Firewall agents escape to the Somatek habitat to pursue their next lead in the Know Evil conspiracy. There was a Firewall contact at the station, an uplift security chief named Nissum, but he has gone missing. The team must gain entrance into the habitat, track down the missing agent and pursue their investigation. Along the way, they will deal with mercurial uplifts, ape pit fights and a devastating secret that would throw transhumanity into chaos if it became public. Find out what the secret is and what horrors await the agents in this episode of Know Evil! http://actualplay.roleplayingpublicradio.com/2012/05/genre/horror/eclips...

Nothing major; the thing with you, Drew, and the brick got on my nerves a little. I'm sure you where behaving in character and as a rational player, the situation just reminded me of similar situations with players who blocked up the game arguing small points. I was surprised. Instead of allowing yourself to be drawn into a tense roleplaying experience you used your async status as a reason to be above the "influence" of the brick. The situation just didn't feel like how I normally hear you playing your characters.

fair enough. I think it was because I made my save against the influence or at least that's how I remember it. My character also has the psi-defense trait. I understand how some people would disagree with how I role played it.

Re: Actual Play Campaign at RPPR: Know Evil
I think you failed the resistance check; that was why Caleb kept hitting you with Stress. You did a fine job of explaining your reasoning in game. My understanding of YGBM hacks is that they didn't function like async abilities but rather as a form of Titan technology, specifically art, similar to a basilisk hack. The structure of the object, in this case the brick, was such that a transhuman mind could not find it undesirable; sort of an extension of the Golden Ratio. I felt distracted because you insisted you could detect a psychic attack when it was not (in my opinion) a psychic attack. You were completely justified in not picking up the brick since it was massively out of place in the server room and you knew the place was Titan infected. I only got annoyed with some of your reasoning.

Re: Actual Play Campaign at RPPR: Know Evil
I tend to have somewhat paranoid characters. In a TITAN-related situation, insisting that the unbeliveably beautiful object be carefully sealed in a nano-proof faraday container for safe extraction or that the object be placed in a safe spot until such measures can be obtained would be something I would probably do in that situation. It is hard to believe that an intensely paranoid individual, in a stressful dangerous situation, would lower their guard quickly.

I am impressed with the calibur of roleplaying for everyone involved in this session. With nearly any group I've ever dealt with first hand the entire first hour of this game would've degenerated into PvP combat or backstabbing, going around in circles and generally spread bad blood between players as well as characters. Ross, Tom, Jason, Aaron, Thad, and Caleb all deserve a quiet nod of respect for being mature, civil gamers.

We are in no way near the end of the campaign. It's still going on, as a matter of fact (podcast episodes are posted months after being recorded). It takes place in Earth orbit.

Episode 13 The Firewall team survives the ambush from the bounty hunter, but only narrowly so. In order to continue the investigation, they must enter Triad territory and get answers from the top of the criminal organization. Getting an audience with a fearsome Triad boss isn’t exactly easy so the team must prove themselves worthy first. This requires a combination of finesse, streetwise, and brute strength. Can the team manage to meet the leader of the Triads? What secrets will they learn? Are pandas awesome or what? Holy shit! During the scene with the CEO, I was certain that a panda-assassin were going to pop out of the jungle and murder him. What actually happened was infinitely cooler. It kinda felt like Tom should have stepped up to the plate a bit more in that, but Ross kinda overwhelmed him. Still, easily one of the most awesome episodes.

Re: Actual Play Campaign at RPPR: Know Evil
A fantastic show. It's incredible what's possible when a game clicks, players invested in their characters and the GM painting a rich narrative for them to interact with. I've had the eclipse phase rulebook for several years, but I am always a little overwhelmed by the idea of GMing a game I've never had the chance to play. Know Evil is a fantastic primer in the lore and mechanics of Eclipse Phase. I'll be running my own campaign soon, and I'll be scrambling for the rulebook half as often thanks to you guys. Aditionally, I'm sure my perception of the setting has been influenced by the tone of your game (which can only be described as pitch-perfect in my opinion.) In short, I love Know Evil to death, and I expect my players will have a better, richer experience of Eclipse Phase because I listened to it. Oh, there is one thing that I should bring up because I'm a certain sort of horrible person. During the Actual Play sessions, I often hear people refer to the visual components of AR as "Entropic Displays." The term for those images is actually Entoptic, Ent being within and Optic referring to an eye. So an image that originates within the viewer's own eye is an Entoptic Display. Anyhow, since the podcast is released with at least a ten episode lag, you might very well have already figured that out and switched parlance without us hearing it yet.

As I am a horrible monster, I have split up the planning and actual bank robbery due to length. It would have been nearly 7 hours long, which is a bit much. The planning episode will go up tonight or tomorrow. I will release the episodes more quickly though AND as a special bonus from Caleb, each episode will have a PDF of Caleb's notes. I will also take this time to ask for your vote in the Ennies. Role Playing Public Radio is up for Best Podcast. Please vote it a 1! http://www.ennie-awards.com/vote/ BTW, Panopticon is up for best writing. You should also vote for it :D

@Castlereagh I had no idea about the entropic thing. Sorry, but we are going to go through the majority of the campaign fucking that up :-/ But hey, it won't be without a lot of company. Thanks for letting us know though. I'm really glad you're enjoying the campaign! When you guys play, you should record your stuff and throw it online. Rag-NERD-rok is doing a pretty awesome Actual Play (with Vicar as a transplant NPC!), but there is no such thing as too much Eclipse Phase. Regardless, at least start a thread and let us know how the campaign goes. There's plenty of Know Evil left to go. We still have Scum Tier and Earth Tier to go, and there are (apparently...damn you, Clockworkjoe) two Luna games left to go.

Episode 14
Hey, my thread is back! Episode 14 is up at RPPR: http://actualplay.roleplayingpublicradio.com/2012/07/genre/horror/eclips... Robbing a bank is unheard of in the age of Eclipse Phase. The Erato bank is as heavily guarded as a military installation, with dozens of armed drones, guards, security systems and AGI infosec specialists protecting it. However, the Firewall team must retrieve an item from a safety deposit box in order to continue their investigation of Manjappa and the source of the Know Evil virus. But a bank robbery is no easy thing to plan. Furthermore, Firewall has to authorize this mission first, which requires a meeting of the proxies. Note to listeners: this is the planning session of the heist. The actual robbery takes place in the next session, which ClockworkJoe promised to post next. If you want to see what your group would do to plan the robbery, the handouts given to players are located on the main page as a PDF.

One thing really confounded
One thing really confounded me: You would think that async bank robberies would quickly procure enough to pay for resleeving that one Async's children. Is there a special cost for a body that a child can grow up in?

I'd guess an immature
I'd guess an immature biomorph would simply be cheaper, as you could crank 7 year old equivalents 3 times as fast as 21 year old equivalents.

The Sleeving Kids Thing
I guess I should be more clear on why Nia needed a bunch of money to afford bodies for her kids. First off, she's Uploaded. I've made that the last truly discriminated minority in my version of the universe. At least synthmorphs have the numbers, but the Uploaded aren't welcomed by anyone. They prove too much of a security risk, as well as an uncomfortable reminder of the Fall. Their numbers are reduced by the need for confirmation of their fate on Earth, but it is still hard to come back from something like that. Nia, being one of the most famous victims of the Fall, has a hard time buying anything, not to mention morphs. Additionally, I've house-ruled that having children is prohibitively expensive in the EP universe (there's not a lot in the book on the subject). First off, there are millions of egos in the system that "survived" the Fall but still don't have bodies. I imagine a number of political factions would object to spending the resources on "new" people when scores of others await in cold storage or simulspace. Also, I assume they aren't growing organic morphs so much as assembling them, so the time issue doesn't make kids any cheaper to make. Making a kid takes nearly the same amount of time as to make a Fury; it only requires less material. Then there are the population limitations of space travel. Why would anyone pay the monthly fabber mass to keep a kid alive when they can spend a little bit more to sleeve a habitat engineer? I imagine that has a serious affect on the economics of sleeving children. Finally, I've ruled that sleeving a kid for any length of time in a synthetic seriously fucks with their heads. There is a whole range of cognitive development cut off when your skin is metal and you don't have facial muscles. That precludes the cheap option. So Nia robbed banks because resleeving her kids would be extremely expensive, require criminal intervention, necessitate extensive bribes, and risk capture for both her and her children. Around the time we played this, I actually pitched to EP a book section about children as decadent luxury items in the game. Everybody at the table was aware of my take, so I guess we kind of blew past it without much second guessing. Hope that clears things up.

pg. 278 says 6 months to 2 years for a custom morph
Page 278 of the book says 6 months (pod) to 2 years for a custom morph. However, an "off the rack" could simply be copied with the equivalent of healing vats. I mean, a healing vat can do a limb in 3 days, it can probably do a whole body in 15. Arguably "off the rack" biomorphs should be cheaper than they are in the book. I think the economics problem here is healing vats are too cheap (High). If you can crank out "High" value in 15 days for a "High" cost, it is out of whack. One way around this is that PhD level skills are required for re-sleeving into biomorphs. That would require specialized AGIs or real people to oversee it (though they could do via telepresence), thus biomophs have a higher fixed "sleeving cost". This is a departure from the base setting, though. If I run EP I'm probably going to make healing vat type technology much more expensive. Perhaps 125,000 credits each. EDIT: The book does mention rebuilding a body "from a head" though. Perhaps brains are very hard to do with healing vats. Regardless, you could simply attach a synth bridge to the spinal cord and drop a cyberbrain in instead. This option of course would not work with children as cyberbrains screw up their development in the OPs universe.

To clarify something Pyrite
To clarify something Pyrite brought up the Hallow Stars hadn't robbed a Lunar bank before, no one had. They had been robbing terraforming stations on Mars to get credits. I got the impression is wasn't as much the money required as the timing. She'd just been given back her kids egos so she couldn't sleeve them without having to physically care for them and they needed to do the job first; then they could sleeve the kids and try to live outside the system. I'm fairly sure that transhumanity can't nanofrabricate a biomorph; they have to be grown. Growing a morph from conception to adult form takes roughly two years thanks to accelerated growth, like NewtonPulsifer said.
Pyrite Pyrite's picture
I guess that makes a little
I guess that makes a little more sense, especially if she didn't just mean 'buying bodies and putting them in the brains' but instead that plus getting them somewhere secure where she can raise them in an environment not surrounded by crazy psychic commandos. Edit: After typing this, I was consumed by how hilarious this scenario would be. I mean, just picture Aunt Lenore! You'd think reclaimer-rep from the video would get her something, but maybe trans-human paranoia runs deeper than I'm accounting for. By the way, I really have to commend you as a GM for the complexity of what you've outlined. It seems that whenever my groups have come up against something that might have been this deep, we never have confidence in anything and we end up abandoning the game.

The Uploaded, the minority
The Uploaded, the minority that Caleb has created, are individuals who have been proven to be previously uploaded by TITANs, meaning that a perfect copy of their mind is possessed by humanity's greatest enemy. With that knowledge a perfect hack could be created for that single individual, tracking them across the mesh until it found them and infected them, making them do whatever the TITANs wanted. In Know Evil they are the most feared/rejected minority in the Solar system and can not hold any job with any security clearance. More than likely she'd be black listed on all rep networks. Caleb seems to be playing up the fear transhumanity has for the TITANs and how much they are willing to do to feel safe. Just look at the reason why Know Evil was even created to see what certain individuals are willing to do when pressed.

Well, I think just having
Well, I think just having children probably isn't that prohibitively expensive in of itself, exowombs are mentioned in use by everybody, even Jovians. Just put in genetic material, set to bake, time passes and ding, you have a baby. But, that's an entirely different animal then needing to custom grow a couple of flats or splicers, to the precisely right age, and to do so DRM and other restriction free so that nobody can keep tabs on you. Since, I believe, Nia's children were also uploaded, they aren't exactly going to be loved by anyone out there either, especially in the inner system, so I never once doubted why it would take Nia shitloads of money to resleeve two kids. I'd almost comment she'd also specifically have to clone their new bodies from her own genestock, but that'd actually probably be a terrible idea.

I might also commission a pic for her, too A French language fanzine is being set up, with each issue a different theme her story would be a nice one for a Fall/Earth issue
