Physics Question: Neutrino Transmission
We ran a one-shot the other day. The PC's were sent on a suicide mission. The only "win" scenario involved piercing the ice crust of Europa and farcasting intel about the disaster to a Firewall proxy in Earth orbit. The last surviving character managed to pull it off, so an ego with some very pertinent information is going to arrive and have an effect on my campaign. How long will it take to arrive (in Earth standard time)? Weeks? Months? Years?

Less than an hour.

Minutes. You're looking at roughly 30 minutes to an hour for light to travel from Earth to Jupiter (ballpark figure; Earth and Jupiter range from 4.2 - 6.2 AUs apart.) Egocasting is a fairly rapid form of transport, hence it being widely preferred to starship travel, which does take weeks or months.

I have a table here http://www.aleph.se/EclipsePhase/Distances%20in%20the%20solar%20system.pdf with the average lightspeed delays on page 4-6. Jupiter-Earth is 43.8 minutes, give or take a few seconds for where Europa is in its orbit. Incidentally, some people have started thinking about neutrino comms through earth for finance: http://www.forbes.com/sites/brucedorminey/2012/04/30/neutrinos-to-give-h...

Thanks, a nice and handy sheet for the distances.

Earth is ~8 light minutes from the sun, so the difference in communication times between when the two planets are on the same side of the sun and when they are on opposite sides should be about 16 minutes, so we're talking ~8 minute error bars (the few seconds from Europa's revolution are negligible compared to that). Given these baselines, the exact number is the speed of plot.

These Spam Ais are congregating here. I feel like they're asking for help from Transhumanists in the only way they know how: context-aware, barely coherent advertising gibberish!

even our spams are transhuman level! see how cool EP is?! I think the question isn't how long it'll take the ego to reach Firewall, but how long will Firewall wait before they resleeve said ego, if they resleeve him at all I wouldn't be surprised if they simply erase that copy after extracting whatever valuable information it got, and resleeve from backup, assuming they haven't already.
