Quick, possibly dumb bot/AI question
Do bots come with appropriate AIs installed to operate autonomously, or is it strictly remote control/jamming unless you shell (hah) out the additional cost for an AI?

They come with AIs. While I don't find a spot where it's explicitly stated for all robots as it is for vehicles, it's strongly implied. "...they are not equipped to be sleeved into (though they may be jammed;...)" on p. 345, for instance, is pretty indicative that you aren't _expected_ to jam it by default. Additionally, the automech and dwarves explicitly mention the default AI that's included in the description. All of the new bots in Panopticon also explicitly mention some of the skills that their AIs have.

Re: Quick, possibly dumb bot/AI question
It might be that the default AI is not quite as good as one bought specifically as a vehicle/device AI (or the reverse), depending on the make and kind of device. For example, few bother designing kitchen mixer AIs with anything more than rudimentary skills in Art: Blending, Interest: Blender Specs, and Profession: Kitchen Safety, and likely very low aptitudes. Conversely some equipment might boast particular AIs. Who cares about the chassis of your butlerbot when it is the software that counts? The Noosys Wintergreen series of butler AIs is very popular for its skill at divining the needs of their owners, often defusing problems using its unusually clever social software - some have claimed Noosys have actually included scanned transhuman neural networks from infugees to produce it, and a few critics think that there is a danger in having butlerbots that are smarter than their owners. But the customers are usually just delighted, and willing to fork over the rather substantial licence fees.

It would have been nice for it to be explicitly stated somewhere, perhaps with a value. I'd probably give every device a 40 in doing what it does, the standard skillware rating. This wouldn't actually BE a skillware though, it would be very much tied in to the device's function and form. Trying to use the same program in a different vehicle would end in disaster when the vehicle attempted to engage a gear it didn't have, or use fly out a window with non-existent rotors. They would also be incredibly dumb AIs. Unlike Muses, which have had years to read your emotions, a servitor is going to take every statement at face value, and obey anyone with it's password, or similar stupid-robot behaviours.

Re: Quick, possibly dumb bot/AI question
Thanks for the input. I'm mostly curious about the AIs included with things like surveillance bots - saucers, specks, etc. Their ratings in things like Infiltration and Perception are perhaps relevant. Two more questions: 1. How capable should these included AIs be, considering that buying an AI on its own often costs significantly more than a bot? 2. Can a standard "dumb" AI run on the same device as an ego, or does it require its own ecto/mesh inserts/whatever?

See page 264 - 265 of the core for full info about both of these questions. An AI's active skills are capped at 40 and knowledge skills are capped at 90, so that's your answer for to capability. An AI does requires a device to run on, be it an ecto, mesh inserts, a ghostrider module, or whatever else.

Re: Quick, possibly dumb bot/AI question
No, I mean more how many and which specific skills would be included. I guess I can decide that mmyself, though. As for the device question, EDIT: I am dumb. Thanks for the info.
