What might be on a public server?
So let's say I hack the public mesh in a tin can hab, or maybe a sizeable ship. Panopticon gives me a good idea of how the infrastructure is set up, with major systems on vpns, but what about more mundane things? Assuming there's a more public node what kind of things might I find there? Here's some things I can think of, but are there more? Public spimes Environmental data (temp, pressure etc) Map of the hab Solar system map (with a "you are here" arrow :P) News ... Basically the stuff on page 239 "information at your fingertips" Lights/thermostat/door contols On a slightly related note, do.you need to have special software (like tacnet) to set up a vpn? Thanks for any insights!

As far as I know, and the way we play it. You only need to make an interfacing test (if that's even necessary) and all parties need to own and be running encryption software, (which they are by default). A tacnet agrants added functionality to people sharing the same AR space over a VPN.

Mea Culpa: My mode of speech can make others feel uninvited to argue or participate. This is the EXACT opposite of what I intend when I post.

Ok, cool, that clears that part up at least! I was wondering if it might be encryption software. :)

No, but encryption software would help ensure security. VPNs are a key component of interconnection today, so I have no doubt that the majority of computers have the ability to create a VPN built-in. Hell, to be honest, VPNs are older than the internet... the most ancient forms of the internet were little more than VPN systems. If they can connect to the mesh, they should be able to connect to and create a VPN.
