What's for dinner?
The sleep thread of course suggests another important topic: food in EP. The basics are pretty clear. Even before fabbers most food came from hydroponics, cultured meat and other hightech approaches rather than traditional farming. Today "real" farm food is rare and expensive - but some people of course grow it for fun, by tradition or for religious reasons. Infomorphs and many synthmorphs desire virtual dishes, while plenty of people try to come up with better fabber recipes. So, where is your favourite place to eat? And what would you order there?

Call me old fashioned, but I like a roasted [url=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hufu]hufu[/url], nanofabricated at home from a time-honored scum recipe. With a nice glass of chianti, of course. ;)

"Fursylphcers" roasted gently over a trash fire anywhere there is enough oxygen and trash. For a Furslyphcer recipe, look up "Turducken" on the mesh and make appropriate substitutions. :D

Depends. I like the idea of AR-augmented tofu myself. Or maybe just getting a nutrient pack and eating in simulspace. Social eating is another story.

So is that a 'splicer stuffed inside a sylph stuffed inside a fury? I'd be worried about all the growth hormones and combat drugs from the fury screwing up cooking times and taste. ;)

Nutrient bricks with AR enhancement are the best thing for those in space, especially on smaller habitats. Tin cans, scum barges, etc. That being said, as much as you can simulate taste, you can't simulate texture (not without VR, at which point nutrition isn't really a question). There's probably a whole range of science to creating nutrient bars that simulate various flavours and textures thanks to edible spimes inside them. That way, you don't need to download the AR programs. On Mars and in some of the many O'Neill/Hamilton Cylinders across the system, of course, there's room for growing crops and raising animals. Of course, depending on who owns the habitat will change just what sort of crops they are. Orbital Strawberries; as sweet as natural strawberries but the size of your fist, grown exclusively on a single Scum Barge devised by a group of Scum geneticists.

As for myself, when I don't go for a quick printburger (there is a lovely little cheap-and-cheerful place just off Kangtian in Valles, Dingding HotFood, that prints great fastfood) I like the interactive meals from Quitech. While they often go for the naturalistic - three course meals like a salmon quiche, beef Wellington and a chocolate/fruit confection - the food is heavily nanoenhanced and self-documenting. Eating comes with AR and even XP overlays relating to the history, culture and associations of the food, sometimes delightfully quirky (the above meal contains a fictionalized detective story narrated by Weng Parker pursuing the question of who the dish is actually named for, ending in a very satisfying conclusion in the Madeira wine during the desert). Educational and fun, but usually best when you are eating alone. For company, I have always felt making the food together is most fun. There is some great party support software from Lucullus Collective.

I expect that people who rely on un-cracked fabbers and makers would still practice manual cooking; you can make a lot of dishes from relatively few blueprints, if the blueprints are for the basic ingredients, like flour, rice, corn, eggs, a few different meat types, seven or eight types of fruit and veges, and seasonings and sauces. It might be more cost effective for a low-income biomorph than buying the blueprints for every individual meal as you want it.

I like dining at a places that has a distant observation view, and first dish of choice would be Creme caramel/flan. Eating it from a plate with Cutlery is enjoyable. However being somewhat pragmatic I tend to eat it in my quarters in front of a displayed image, and (at low gravity) eat it from a handheld tube.
