Faction Shift
As your character grows and develops ( succeeds in accomplishing their goals/motivations) and in general changes, can they shift their faction? I know that your background is where you came from and can't be changed, but your faction is who you choose to 'hang out' with.

Re: Faction Shift
Yes. In a sense both are 'where your character is coming from'. Of course, it'll probably involve a fair bit of roleplay before they're really 'accepted', and they won't get the new bonuses that a starting character in that faction would (then again, they won't suddenly lose the knowledge they had from their old faction).

Re: Faction Shift
As I would run it, the faction bonuses in character creation remain, but the character can of course change faction. Sometimes the change can include adding a blacklisted or bad reputation trait in the faction they left, giving a few points to "basic training" in the faction (if suitable).

If you, for example, leave the Ultimates to join Cognite (from Ultimate to Hypercorp backgrounds), then in the character sheet won't be any change at all (I think), but you will inmediately lose a lot of stuff, namely free access to the Ultimates facilities and resources. All that is "fluff" data (you will be gaining access to Cognite's logistic resources, after all), but can give material for a lot of games. Now the question... This is Eclipse Phase, and for me that mean Cortical Stacks and Backups. So... If I leave the Ultimates and join Cognite, then I get killed, the cortical stack cannot be recovered, and a previous backup (made BEDORE I "defected") has to be put online... Who will I be "serving"? The bad part is... The Ultimates won't trust me (I left them already, after all), and Cognite won't trust me (they made the deal or whatever with a version of me that had his reasons to leave the Ultimates, or something). I bet a Black Mark negative trait with both Cognite and the Ultimates would be the bare minimun... So you see, things can make that "switch of patrons in the same faction" interesting... So I would advice to keep your loyalties, or at least update your backup after you change them ^^

What makes this scenario interesting to me is if the Ultimates have a backup from before your dissatisfaction with them AND Cognite has a recent backup. They both activate them. Suddenly there are two of you. And they are bitter enemies.

That's the premise of Woken Furies, actually. the final installment of the Takeshi Kovacs trilogy An oligarch familly resleeve an old back up of Kovacs and use him to track the "real" one. I like the principle that alliances can shift dramatically so fast, and when someone is resleeved, that person has no idea (unless the person made sure to notify himself) of what happened

Re: Faction Shift
That situation would prove to be a llittle too difficult, since the law forbids Alpha-level forking, so only the most updated ego would be resleeved; yeha, the Ultimates could sleeve a previous backup... but that would be part of a conflict already ongoing between those two factions, or the beginning of one. It is possible, of course, but there are better ways to do the stuff.
