Prime Real Estate
Transhumanity varies greatly. Infomorphs, biomorphs, pods, synthmorphs, even these categorizations don't cover all the subtle nuances that differentiate everyone. However, for all this variance, there is one similarity: Everyone takes up space. Naturally, this brings up the obvious question: Where is the best place to live? There are many metrics by which to measure the various places to get this answer, and that's what this thread is about: Where would you consider the best place to inhabit? My personal preference resides on an Earth-like exoplanet or a water-world like Ceres or Europa, largely out of general stability and prevalence of resources, but this isn't about my preferences. What's the best place to live? Where's got the best resource access? The safest locales? Best environment? Best job possibilities? Best personal freedoms? Best government? Best economy? Which, to abuse the saying, is the best of all possible worlds?

I like the "a morph for everyone" law of Titan so I'm a quebecer, then i think that New-Quebec will be my place :P

What do you mean a butterfly cause this ? How a butterfly can cause an enviromental system overload on the other side of a 10 000 egos habitat ?

Morningstar seems to be the perfect mix for me. A decent mix of freedom and government. The PC is a little too big brother for me though in a setting like this everyone is a bit of a nosy neighbor I suppose.

Extropia seems to be the right kind of place for a libertarian mad scientist like me. Freedom, access to both the inner system markets and the openness of the outer system. Sure, the cost of living is a bit steep and the micro-lawsuits annoying. But it has great nightlife, lots of creatives, dynamic economy and cutting-edge tech.

Re: Prime Real Estate
Given the setting of EP I would likely choose being an Infomorph living free of indenture. If I felt the need to see-hear-taste-feel-smell I'd just hop into a VR simulspace, or maybe I'd pimp myself out as an Infomorph assistant in a ghost-rider module and take a spin in someone else's head/computer/ecto. Of course as long as I was part of the upper crust of the dictatorship...the Jovian Republic would probably be pretty sweet. I'd get the best tech, food, living space, etc available to the junta and the "little" people's problems wouldn't really enter my equation unless I had to put in a personal appearance to step on some necks or scare off those annoying Firewall agents undermining my power :-)

Re: Prime Real Estate
For those with the cash, the Jovian Republic is probably best. Tremendous resources, tremendous power, plenty of exceptions for those 'in the know'. For those without cash ... probably Titan? Lots of power and resources even for the have-nothings. Business Tycoon? Mars. Hedonist? Morningstar. Mad scientists? Extropia or Locus. Just mad? Outer rim. On fire? Mercury (or Europa, depending on how you feel about it.)

Re: Prime Real Estate
Why would hedonists go to the Morningstar instead of joining a Scum fleet? Morningstar strikes me as more of a "good" version of the Consortium. Though it's in parenthesis for a reason.

"Why would hedonists go to the Morningstar instead of joining a Scum fleet? Morningstar strikes me as more of a "good" version of the Consortium. Though it's in parenthesis for a reason." Pravati (which, iirc, is technically independent). Although scum barges are a better example. I notice Luna gets no love. Too close to earth? I wouldn't mind living on Luna, personally. Beautiful scenery, even prettier morphs (don't try to tell me that lunar flier wasn't gorgeous). The potential to make a serious comeback? (pfft. Not in this eternity)

Well if you want to fixate on 'pretty' morphs, I say the example Martian Ranger girl PC from Sunward wins out. A little dirty, but ...

Philosophically? I'm down for Extropia. Those guys really speak to me. But in general? I dunno, Scum sound like a fun group to hang with, since they are the Party Hard faction.

Gogol Bordello in space would be pretty awesome.

Strange how some people would rather be rich in an oppressive regime than rich in a free society.

Well, to misquote Chumbawamba: "Yes, rich. Either way someone has to be rich."

Re: Prime Real Estate
I see Venus as the old Italian city-states of the 18th or so century (if I'm not mistaking the time xD), and while Morningstar can be "sold" as a more decaf version of the PC, remember they are at war (covert, political and economic war, but war in the end). I think I'd like the Titan Commonwealth more, or Locus. Or, if I just want to stay there all day looking into the "internet", I'd be on a surya in the Sun.

Everywhere is a compromise between what you want and what you must suffer for it. For example, if you live in an anarchist hab, the infrastructure to do major scientific works just isn't there, by and large. If you want to do something major, like build a supercollider, you need the approval of the hab to use the resources, space, and power. If you try to build your own, you still need at least their assent. Anarchist habs suffer the tyranny of the masses. Meanwhile, a socialist hab like Titan is not all smiles and sunshine. Sure, it might sound nice on the surface, but it's not perfect; no place ever is. Government-mandated labour, for example, and the bureaucracy that is government control. You want an upgrade for that baseline body you got? You've got to wait about three months for the nano-vat to free up for you, unless you're really popular. What implants you can get are also likely restricted heavily, and Titan engages in memetic indoctrination pretty heavily. Socialist habs suffer the tyranny of government and bureaucracy. The Jovians... Let's not go into that. The PC, meanwhile, offer security, stability, and infrastructure. You want a supercollider built, all you need is the credits and the approval papers. While there might be backroom dealings due to political interests, the truth of it is that such things are largely rare. In the PC, a person can go to work each day, pay a small tax, and, at the end of the day, know their money is theirs and that, unless they are somehow a social pariah, they can use that money to get what they want right now, without having to worry about their reputation. In doing so, the demand for your skills becomes what makes you worthwhile, not some arbitrary reputation system. Morningstar takes the best of Titan and the PC and merges it together; it's a frontier world, where Open Source thrives, and you can help yourself with a reputation, but credits still exist at the end of the day and your money is as good as anyone's. Am I saying these places are perfect? Of course not, they've all got their flaws and tyrannies. I'm just saying that everywhere is a compromise and people are choosing some form of tyranny wherever they go.

The Sun tends not to be the best place for internet; lots of interference.

Titan appeals to me, as does
Titan appeals to me, as does Oberon and the Love & Rage collective - plus when you get in good with them you get very reasonable access to the Gate. So that fulfills my desire of striking out and Gatecrashing with a few forks of myself, some close friends and their forks and settling a nice non-extreme planet with interesting views and plenty to research. Don't get me wrong the Solar system is a nice place to visit, but I don't really want to live here. Too crowded, too many competing factions better to head out into the galaxy and find a nice quiet place to colonize. As for what body i'd use? Anything synth, really really high end synth with emphasis on processing power to solve problems. While I fancy that other forks of myself might see sense and reason in taking similar bodies that are rugged and durable I would strongly advise against any individual accompanying me come with an organic body. Much as I love the Ultimate faction for their ideals I do not see why philosophically those ideals are incompatible with inorganic bodies, especially inorganic bodies that may have their own complex but more durable bodily systems mimicking a lot of the traits of human bodies (fake skin, etc). Far too fragile, far to delicate. In deference to my old life though i'd likely stick with a humanoid-form synth. Ultimately building and upgrading it when possible to keep it relevant to my current preoccupation. Long term setting up an anarchist exo-system University or Technical College would be my idea of a good time.
