Re: New player looking for an online group
Also, for waiting list folks, I totally support the idea of an ongoing 'Looking for online game' list here...Perhaps we could get it stickied? RPOL is not a bad place in any way shape or form though I haven't played in the EP game there, I'm just thinking that since these are THE forums for EP, having a good central clearing house for online-interested-players as opposed to geographic areas would be beneficial. (Also, for the record: Blade Runner, anything by Neal Stephenson, the Shaper/Mechanist stories. Hate: fluffy "ecology is magic and we all have to be oneloveonemindunitedandmaketheplanethappy" themes that pop up in far too much anime. I'm not at all against ecology plots. I'm against 'gaian' magical universal-fisher-king-itis where everyone's well-being is mystically tied to the planet's biome. Ecological crash is a serious enough problem and making it into a Disney-esque god-in-the-greenhouse just completely hoses it for me.)

Re: New player looking for an online group
A waiting list could be a good thing. I was considering running shorter module games rather than arbitrarily long campaigns; this would allow the player group to switch up regularly. I intend to have a metaplot, but this way I won't be hogging all the players if another GM wants to have a crack at it, and we won't have a waiting list full of players who never get to actually play. I'm also going to cap the play group to five players at a time (I've tried running games with more, and they tend to splinter into smaller conversation groups and no one knows whats going on), which currently looks like scummer, sinhound, Extropian_Knight, Azlinea, and either sinhound's as-yet unnamed friend or dcgreenwood. All of the character concepts mentioned so far are fine. PM me a background before you work on the numbers crunch, and I'll come up with a way to get you all grouped together for some crazy adventure. I'm not thinking that this will be a Firewall team per se, but Firewall characters are perfectly acceptable. Re-Laborat, I take it that Avatar didn't really do it for you?

Re: New player looking for an online group
*yawn* Been up working on a backstory, so... woo me I guess. Still doesn't entirely feel quite right, it's lacking in some coherency between BF and AF, but I'll finish it sometime between now and eventually. There a specific length you're looking for, or anything like that? (Also, his handle is psykotau, so... not so unnamed anymore, lol.)

Re: New player looking for an online group
No specific length requirement, although I would prefer it weren't a novella. Finding a picture or three that give the feel of the character always helps.

No. From where I was sitting as an enjoyer of old and new SF, it was a godawful rehash of a bunch of very, very, very old SF cliches and didn't bring anything new to the table at all. Additionally, as a reefkeeper, I was able to recognize that a lot of the pretty 'plants' were direct steals from Pacific/Indonesian reef-life. You want to see what that place looks like in the real world, get yourself a dim UV light and some SCUBA gear or a CCR and find a reef to lurk near after dark. So to me, about the only thing that was new and interesting about it was the SFX. And I really don't go to movies just for the flashy lights anymore. This is only my opinion, of course. If you enjoyed it, great.

Re: New player looking for an online group
I hated it. It was a wretched trope abuse, and hurt my sensibilities. The only way I could stand it was to imagine it as a crafted biosphere in Eclipse Phase. +Ecology people building an environment where they can plug directly into the "animals" that are in fact the main protectors of the biosphere. The big ass tree would be the computer running the whole thing, and the images of what looked quite a bit like a crashed spaceship around the tree would, in fact, be a crashed spaceship around the tree. But that's because I don't like space magic very much.

Re: New player looking for an online group
Ok, so we are going to be starting out at the Carnival of the Goat. It's floated it's way to the Martian Trojans as it makes it's slow path to the Scum Circus at Ceres. Why you are aboard the Carnival is up to you: it's Space Vegas. Bounty hunters will be rubbing elbows with f-rep faces and h-rep gamblers and keeping an eye out for those g-rep marks and the x-rep Gatejumper contact they are supposed to be meeting up with to discuss that thing about the thing involving i-rep. I may regret challenging you here, but I doubt you can come up with a playable character fucked up enough to be out of place at the Goat.

Re: New player looking for an online group
Haha, this'll be great! The character I'm working on will fit right in and I think I already have a pretty viable reason he's there. I'll PM you later once I get his concept a little more fleshed out, some of his past is a little disjointed currently.

Re: New player looking for an online group
You know, with a bit of tweaking... this guy could probably win that challenge... Also, is it space old vegas or space new vegas? Not new vegas like the video game, but new vegas like... what vegas has become? If you live here, you know what I'm talking about...

Why do I have a feeling that my character is going to be extraordinarily normal, especially compared to yours? :P I'm not sure if it's really going to matter, but do we want to discuss group roles for characters so there's less overlap or do we just want to roll with? Personally, just rolling with it is a lot of fun because then there's usually that area that will present some pretty interesting challanges to overcome.

Re: New player looking for an online group
Eh, I dunno... I mean, he's pretty normal... for... a guy that's had his life... I guess >_>... Anyway, I don't really think there's gonna be a problem even if there is overlap. Unless we all get the idea to make characters that fill the exact same role, I'm sure there will be enough diversity overall for everything to be covered. I'm actually more worried about us being too prepared, too MMMPOWAHFUL...

That's a good point. I'm sort of intentionally not reading some of the stuff in the books so I don't go in thinking, "Ok, so I need this, this, and this so I can counter this and that." That being said, I'm pretty good about not making godly characters even once I know a system like the back of my hand. I think that spawns from me typically liking the mundane/average/flawed characters in books, movies, comics, etc. It's also why I like Star Wars and yet hate the Force. ;)

Re: New player looking for an online group
Aww, c'mon... don't hate on the force - hate on the Jedi and Sith. There are plenty of awesome force-users who aren't either and do just fine not-breaking anything... But yeah, I know where you're coming from. I've been reading through the gear section and there are just so many things that are like... This is so cheap, why wouldn't EVERYONE have one?

Munchkin away. Here is a discussion on the Carnival of the Goat if you need some idea as to what this place is like.

This is true. Pretty pumped about Carnival of the Goat!

Re: New player looking for an online group
Oh good god, we're doomed. If I've learned anything in all my years of RP'ing, it's that GM's are, by definition, evil. Don't look at me like that - I've GM'ed as well. Horrible things are going to happen to us on the Goat...

Re: New player looking for an online group
I'm going to go through the thread on the Carnival of the Goat and come up with a summary for us to use. It's a bit scattered and frenetic at the moment.

Re: New player looking for an online group
Thanks, man! What did you think of the summaries?

Re: New player looking for an online group
The character writeups will work wonderfully for what I have in mind. I hope to have the working summary of the CotG done tonight or at the latest tomorrow.

Re: New player looking for an online group
I've been working on the character sheet quite a bit and I'm starting to wonder if I'm trying to take too many skills and spreading myself too thin. Making the first character I'm actually going to get to play is always interesting because they're the least number-crunched one, and they're always the most fun to play. Having a hell of a time finding any good pics though that look like what I have in mind. I'm half tempted to con my friend into drawing him up, they're much more artistically inclined than I am. As far as out of game, Dead Island ;)

No problem, I know how that goes. No rush. I AM getting pretty excited about getting a chance to play though. :P

Re: New player looking for an online group
I've finished reading Panopticon, which solves many of the problems I was having describing the Carnival of the Goat. I'll be working on filling in the game details of my plot this week (and probably next).

Yeah, screw whale morphs, we need sharks!

Re: New player looking for an online group
Would I be totally out of line suggesting turtle morphs? They, of course, would have to be trained in stealth and fighting, with a form focusing on immaturity and being less than normal? And toads? War-loving toads? And... maybe, just maybe... Cat morphs of the honorable oriental round-ish cheesy pie loving variety? Oh, yeah, I went there.

That will depend on who is around when I finally get the module written up. Also, if you don't get in on this first one, I've got another story brewing in my head set on Venus with a noir feel to it. Airships and lasers ftw.

I think there might be room but I'm not sure honestly. I haven't heard from anyone in a while except Covariant(the GM) and sinhound. If we're the only one's still in then there's plenty of room for you :)
