Comprehension check on the Creative Commons license
I definitely want to start an EP campaign in my gaming group. I will definitely buy the hardcopy rulebook, but I suspect that persuading my players to plunk down $50 will be a challenge, as most of them are either poor college students or poor recent graduates. If I get the hardcopy/PDF bundle, does the CC license allow me to give away copies of the PDF to my friends so that they can play, and decide later whether they want to buy the book themselves?

Yup. No one has to pay anything to get the pdf of the book. Of course if people like it kicking us a some money so we can keep making the game is great but otherwise share it with anyone you want.
