What would you like to see in Hotfix?
Hey all we're putting together the writing assignments for the book we're tentatively calling Hotfix (though the title will probably change) right now.  For those who haven't heard us talk about it before it'll basically take on several areas of the game world that are currently under developed.  We recently learned that the page count has been upped so we're looking to add another section.  So what do you want to see in more detail?

So, my ideas:

1. Daily life of Transhumanity - making babies and all the questions which arose on the Forum

2. Starships and interstellar battles

3. More morphs along with illustrations!
3a - Maybe official rules for creating custom morphs?

Increase scope on Psi a little bit. Predominantly Touch-range powers seems rather limited. Perhaps also a limited form of PC Epsilon...?

Eschew obfuscation.

Is Hotfix the GM screen? Or something coming out after the sourcebooks? I'd like to see a bit more on the Factors, where's the latest vessel at? How does their prescence effect the current political groups? Etc.

It's the working title for the book after Gatecrashing. So not for a while.

Ah... Then some of these queries may be answered already in the earlier suppliments perhaps? Ok... how about alternate faction rules? Characters working as agents of Project Ozma? The Planetary Consortium? or some of these secondary powers like the Morningstar Constallation or even the Jovian Republic?

Yeah, that would be really useful. But I think that "Daily life of Transhumanity" should come out before that.

I second the request for more information about daily life (making babies and stuff, it's important because the first question one of my future players asked started with "so... when a Sylph and a Fury are "casting their egos together...""

and Uplifts/AGIs. While they are transhumans too, their background is radically different from regular humans.

Spaceflight is okay, i would just like to see some pictures of some Navy Vessels, i mean they do share the same model of ship, and how many different destroyers can be out there?

2. More info on uplifts
3. Spacecraft and the Pandora gates, mainly as one of my player has proposed a game based on the Homeworld videogames and as a huge fan of them myself, well, it would be nice to see what you guys had in mind for spacecraft.
4. Fluff on the other factions and options for working with them.
So basically what has already been said here.

i would like to echo the call for "more dialy life", and would like to add: more short stories, cant get enough of them also would like more starship info, maybe even go as far as saying starship/habitat design rules maybe? and/or simple floorplans, and lastly, more weapons & gear, ok i lied about lastly, the real last one:more details on the workings and relationships of the various factions, and/or "unique" morphs/mods/etc that they tend to use or favor

Spacecraft and habitats for me please, & illustrations of them are essential. And another small piece of fiction (this should occur in all books), this really does give a player a good feel for the setting.

Re: What would you like to see in Hotfix?
You know, if you're going to go with floorplans... the old "Marc Miller's Traveller" game had a neat book, "Imperial Shipyard" or something. What they did was provide a generic collection of modular rooms (tech this and that bridge, engine room, labs, etc.) applicable to ships and stations. The idea was for the GM to put together their own vessels as they saw fit for mapping purposes (the original "Blue Planet" rpg had a similar plan but that suppliment never came out). That still strikes me as one of the better ways to handle floorplans IMHO... Something to consider.

I agree some adventures would be a great thing, but I think it would be better to publish them in PDFs like WW's quickstarts, and print only the universal material. Everyone can write his own adventure based on great stuff from books describing the setting, and ready-made ones are good only for the start and/or example of EP-specific themes in action. Because who needs whole printed books full of adventures? I don't think that EP would be a first RPG system for anybody... So my votes: Adventure published in a hardcover book -1 Adventure published in a Creative Commons PDF +1 And what would be a great idea: create some graphical templates fans can use to prepare their own PDFs with adventures and/or fan material. They would look a LOT better with EP-ish background, frames etc :)

PDF adventures is actually something we're currently working out the details on with Catalyst. We have the two from Gencon this year and another I'm in the middle of writing. Additionally the GM screen with come with an adventure.

Are You going to publish them under Creative Commons, as the core book?

As others have stated, "A Day in the Life of a Transhuman" is key information that should go in some sourcebook or another. If this is the first place it can be injected, please make it so. I'd like more on the way the various factions work internally, from Firewall to Titan to the Junta. Not just the surface 'here is how they treat incoming troublemakers,' but information on the movers and shakers in various communities. And I second more information on uplifts, morphs, and ways to gen your own. (Also, yay, new forum!)

Hi, What I would like to see? Off the top of my head, my first choices would be: -More on spaceships. -Detailed rules for vehicles, walkers and bigger battle armor (you know, District 9 type of stuff) -Combat options and optional rules (more detailed rules for grappling, morph taking size into account, clarifications on stuff like wielding two melee weapons.. more options in general) -More gear.. you can never have enough gear. -More on the Mesh and computers. -Morphs.. as with gear, you can never have enough of them. That's all I can think of for now. :) Cheers, E.

Yes. Everything we plan to do with EP we plan to release as CC. Despite what I've seen elsewhere this was not a marketing stunt on our part to sell the core book. Both Rob and I are committed to the Creative Commons aspect of the game.

1. As was said, space, space ships, space battles. Include a space ship character sheet like Rogue Trader will do it, everyone knows the Spaceship is another character in a Sci Fi game. 2. A map of the solar system with the general spheres of influence. Not overly precise, mind. Just to get a general feel of where which forces will check out your vessel for contraband, and where the Inner systems stop harassing you and shutting you down for having cornucopia makers installed.

Ok, this has already been said, but I'm just adding my vote to it: Spacecraft rules Adventures (big and small) - I really liked On the Run for Shadowrun. Being a new GM, it really helped having references to the rules in the module.

I want spaceships, and I want detailed rules for flying around the solar system, and a way to easily calculate orbital mechanics if at all possible. And adventure seeds, just some plot hooks, for when I'm hitting writer's block. Oh and information on fringe habitats, the weirder the better.

I'm interested in the Infolife aspect of things. What can we find out about AGIs? Naming conventions, "free infomorph" habitats, memes gaining popularity in simulspace lifestyles, and other aspects of life within the Mesh itself.

Re: What would you like to see in Hotfix?
Adventures. I m an old gamemaster, and i don t have so much time to spend on rpgs. And writing a good adventure takes time, a lot of time. Although, EP setting is not so easy to "feel", some written adventures could help players and gms alike to better understand the setting. So ready to play adventures are a good choice if you want to attract players and gms, in my opinion. At the moment, i think having some ready-to-play material is what makes a game alive or dead.

Re: What would you like to see in Hotfix?
Better rules for personal craft. One of the NPCs I wrote up has some decided non-standard equipment (an environment suit designed for HALO jumping from low orbit) that I'd really like to stat out and not just handwave behind the pile of books^W^W^WGM screen. EDIT: I should clarify here - not combat rules, but rules for characters flying and maneuvering such craft as a make-or-break scene of the plot. Guidelines or ideas for running abstract simulspaces for hacker PCs. I've been thinking of basing some of the mechanics off of those from Virtual Realities from Mage but I think they're going to wind up being more free form-slash-whatever seems to work at the moment, which is a bit more loose than I like to run a game. A day in the life of an infomorph. While we're at it, maybe some stuff on AGI and infomorph culture and how they relate to and interact with non-infolife. Viruses, worms, and botnets. Oh, my!

Re: What would you like to see in Hotfix?
It seems like 80% (I haven't counted but...) of the posters think that what EP most needs is spaceship combat rules. This baffles me. Utterly and totally confuses me. I think the EP book/setting basically says "this isn't a space ship game". I see potential thread jacking (this thread being created by Posthuman staff for a very specific purpose). So I invite any interested parties to come tell me how I'm wrong here.

Re: What would you like to see in Hotfix?
I'd like to see a lot of little bits that aren't quite errata but seem to come up on the boards a bit. What kind of "morphs" do people put children into? Obviously there is a range, post-fall, but it'd be nice to have a paragraph/page on what the choices are. How do infomorphs work in relation to a given habitats servers... my understanding was that it was pretty strictly controlled (AI concerns etc); I'd assumed programs would be regulated, etc. But some people seem to feel that servers and infinite computer space are open to everyone; so a hacker can arrive in a habitat make a hundred copies of themself and then do whatever they want. Gear stacking and speed could use some clarification. There seem to be two classes of "speed ups" the Speed +x type and the "grants extra complex mental actions" type (multiple personalities/multitasking/mental speed). Do these all stack? The only one with a restriction is multi-tasking and the restriction is confusingly worded. (From an rp point of view... if Reflex Boost replaces your nervous system with superconducting minerals, how does neurachem then make it faster?) The players "right" to always have their morph/gear. I think it's fair to say that gear, on a CP basis, is much much more powerful than anything else. Dropping a few credits on the right gear gets you stuff (attribute and skill bonuses) that would require many multiples of CP to buy for your ego. Furthermore there is a whole class of bonuses (speed, armor, etc) that aren't available at all. It -seems- to me like the balancing factor in all this is that EP is a game about dying frequently and traveling-by-egocasting. So you're gear/morph is really cheap because you won't have access to it the majority of the time. Naturally there are a lot of people who post and disagree saying, basically, "I spent my character points on it, I should always have my gear and morph, just like everything else I bought at character creation". Some help would be nice; at least a discussion of the ramifications. 3D (or pseudo-3D) maps of habitats. Very very hard for me to imagine what they look like. I saw Rob (I think) is already working on spaceships. Adventure seeds? Maybe with simple maps and a few npcs stated out?

Presumably in the same way that Neurachem works in synthetics - it's some kind of electronic overclocking effect that can be turned on/off as needed rather than an actual 'chem-effect' of the type a biomorph would use. I like that it can have multiple fluff descriptions witht eh same crunch effect in the game. It helps to prevent too may fiddly-bitz that all still do the same thing.
Graf wrote:

This one's all about gamestyle - there's certainly not going to be a right or wrong answer on this one, except to say that the right answer is probably whatever makes most of the people at the table happy. However, IU have to agree that ramifications of each playstyle would make an excellent article, especially if each viewpoint was presented by a different writer.

I would think that these are what the neotenic morphs are for. They could be tweaked to have a variety of appearances and modifications, and so could be used for transhumans who wanted to reproduce. Of course, some transhumans who are chronologically children might wear them for their morphs for reasons of their own (Sarlo in Lack).

The way I was going to run it was the same way the sysadmins at the college I went to ran the multinode cluster for comp.sci students - everyone had an upper limit on disk storage and hard (you can never exceed this much) and soft (if you need it, you can use this much for a limited period of time) limits on the amount of RAM and CPU time you could use. In a particular hab, infomorphs could be given an allotment of processor time and RAM for their egos to execute within and so many exobytes of storage for other things. Trying to make use of resources allocated to other morphs would run into hard limits (which it might be possible to override by cracking the control system, but then you would be getting into infowar within a hab territory).

What's odd is that biomorphs are supposed to not use forced growth (unlike pods) but that they are fully grown and mature in 18 months... Does this mean that there are no immature Exalt bodies that grow into adult Exalts bodies? If so, this seems really wasteful.
Tearlach Tearlach's picture
Re: What would you like to see in Hotfix?
I would assume you could either have a newborn morph (either from a exowomb or the natural way) that grows just like any other baby, or you could throw a empty newborn morph into a growth vat where it will mature quickly. The problem is probably when you speedgrow a inhabited morph possible due to strain on the psyche from changes in their biological brain. Or something.

Now that I think about it, maybe what went wrong with the Lost (aside from what might be a spoiler (I am running low on sleep at the moment - better safe than sorry)) was that the bioengineered children were conscious and growing up in an accelerated VR in addition to being force-grown to a certain physiological age.

Re: What would you like to see in Hotfix?
I will be a bit of a kill-joy and simply state what I don't think should be given priority in terms of official releases. Adventures. Although all good fluff / setting books should be filled with plot ideas and possibly adventure suggestions, my experience with full on adventure books is, well, mixed. Most GMs will be able to use almost all well-written settings books (or at least find them inspirational), while most GMs and gaming groups have very different preferences as to what is a fun adventure / story. For example, I was the GM for a group of players for the back-in-the-day Shadowrun editions, and although I loved the Shadowrun universe I had no use at all for the adventure releases. Releasing adventures as PDF versions though I am very much in favour of.

I'm typically ok with just plot ideas, or adventure ideas. In the shadowrun GM Screen it included a booklet of several 1-2 paragraph adventure ideas, which were very handy. Also, in a couple of their setting book, they provided similar aids. These are great, however, some of GM's simply don't have the time these days to think out a full drawn out adventure. When all one has to do is read the adventure, and then the rules it incorporates, it can be a far better use of ones time. But then again, maybe I'm just speaking for myself. :) I agree with the PDF versions as well. I don't think a full dedicated book is necessary right out of the gate, but maybe in the future.

More space. I want to see just how scary it is. Not in the exsurgent threat sense, but in the sense that it is very inhospitable and will kill you if you're not careful, and sometimes will kill you despite your best laid precautions. In fact, I want to see more hostile and alien environments and rules for them. These would also be really nice overlaid on maps, so players can plot their course through the solar system and beyond based on risk, excitement and discovery. Also, some sort of primer on spacefaring technology would be nice. Talking about things like centrifugal/centripetal force, life support, asteroid defense, mining, habitats, etc. I'm not so keen on space combat - Shadowrun taught me that vehicle combat is too maths intensive to be very fun, but I would love to see some rules on how ships can be used as home bases and as transport. How hard is it to land inside a moving asteroid beehive for example. Not to say I'm looking for simulationism, but a lot of things I've read in Eclipse Phase seem like general knowledge to space specific science fiction buffs and astrophysics hobbyists but might be a little bewildering to less familiar readers.

I'd like to see more advanced combat rules with hit location damage. After all, a bullet in the arm may do little harm, but the same bullet in the head can make you very dead. Vehicle combat and construction would be nice, and as to the guy who said he didn't like all the posts about spacecraft combat, don't complain when people give honest answers to valid questions.

I fully agree; personally I might try and port Nemesis' hit-location mechanic into the EP combat system. But I'm more of a setting tweaker than a mechanic specialist.
