Active Monitoring
Hi! First of all, I'm sorry for my english but I'm italian :P I'm a bit confused about the mechanics of the active monitoring during an hacking attack: 1) have we to assume that EVERY system, device or ego (or its Muse) is always monitored (by AI, Ego or Muse), or the only always-on security system is the firewall? 2) In the second case, which action is it needed to mantain the active monitoring (and eventually make the opposed Infosec test)? 3) where can I find the Infosec skill of the AI generally used for active monitoring? thanks

Re: Active Monitoring
As I understand things: No, Quick, and p331-2 (ranges from 20 to 40).

Re: Active Monitoring
So the pros of using an AI (security AI on page 332, I suppose) instead of the Muse are that it has an Infosec score of 40 vs a 30, and you don't have to keep the Muse busy in a "costant" Quick Action. Am I right?

Re: Active Monitoring
Sounds right. Quick actions aren't a big deal, and you can't really run multiple AIs on these devices anyway (Muses are AI). The Sec AI is just better at security (and other things). I guess it depends on what you're protecting.

Re: Active Monitoring
About busying your Muse... Remember that minds in Eclipse Phase are software, and can be copied as much as you like. If you want your Muse to do two different things at once, then run two instances of it simultaneously on two different devices (say, one in your Mesh Inserts, and one in an Ecto). You could even have multiple AIs, Muses or even Beta Forks, running on different devices in your PAN (one in your Basic Mesh Inserts, one in an Ecto and one each in any number of Ghostrider Modules), and cooperating with eachother or with your Alpha Ego to provide Teamwork bonuses (p.117) on various Mesh-related tasks, including Infosec.

Re: Active Monitoring
that's a good idea: a couple of (good) forks running in two ghostrider modules always involved in monitoring for intrusions: that would provide an high Infosec test..on the other side, it's a bit expensive

Re: Active Monitoring
How so? Copying an AI costs nothing. Preparing a Beta Fork (p. 274) costs nothing, and takes only a minute if you're good (or lucky) at Psychosurgery (and can be retried indefinitely if you're not), and once you have that fork, you can copy it as much as you like. Devices to run these minds on are 250 creds each (Ghostrider Module p. 307; and Ecto p. 325). If anything, it's the initial AI that's expensive (unless you're going the Beta Fork route). Once you've paid the 5'000 for a Muse or a Security AI to run on your Mesh Inserts, then spending another thousand on Ghostrider Modules to give it +20 to most tasks is just elementary. On the note of Beta Fork Teamwork... Imagine having a few pre-prepared Beta Forks, skilled in various useful, non-physical skills (Infosec, Programming, Psychosurgery) backed up in storage, and set to instantiate into Ghostrider Modules under specific conditions. I.E. if someone tries to hack your PAN, then four Infosec Betas instantiate immediately, working with a total skill of 90 (p. 274, p. 117; 60 max skill for Beta Forks, +30 for Teamwork) to lock out intruders.

Re: Active Monitoring
sounds good! But I think I won't tell this to my players (I'm going to start a campaign as GM) 'cause I've already some "problems" with one of them: reaper with a veeeeery powerful armor... >_<

Re: Active Monitoring
The copy-abuse methods are pretty universal (just look through a few old threads), but Reapers aren't a problem. Just move the story elsewhere. :) It's not a very fun game to be a flying gun, unless the GM specifically makes it so.

Re: Active Monitoring
Repears can also be easily countered using the wonders of liquid thermite. Mmm, liquid thermite.

or some nano disassemblers... :P I think it's stupid focusing on powerful morphs and gear when you often change or lose them during the adventures.. I said that to my players, but one of them (the one with the reaper) can't actually ROLE-play, in any rpg we play: d&d, pathfinder, dark heresy an eclipse phase

....and with a Shredder within short range in full-auto mode makes 2d10+3d10+1d10+5=6d10+5=38 DV with 10 AP xD
