Mesh network on a barge
One thing I wish we had more of is sample mesh networks including what sort of functions are available at each level of access (user, security, admin) and how intrusion and security is handled. Anyone have any thoughts on how the mesh on a barge might be set up? I want to have a plausible feel to the environment, and I gotta admit scifi is not my typical genre! :) Thanks!

The way I see it, each barge (or flotilla of barges and ships traveling together) form a Mesh Island of their own, and updating within contact of another. The Mesh is a fractal rhysom of servers and systems, each comprises the contents of the whole (with some exceptions) at a given time, and every time one island enters in contact of another, new data are exchanged and share and spread to others in contact and so on. Glory and Continuity both use that concept in some ways. Not saying how in case players here haven't played them yet, but it really brings interesting gameplay. another exemple: You're on Titan, a TAU student in New Quebec. And you need information for an essay about the Dante's Road (shameless plug, here). Problem is, the information is only on Mars, and the time delay makes it difficult to obtain. Fortunately a Scum fast courrier has arrived from Mars, so the information you seek can be found through that courrier's Mesh. Gamewise, it might take a difficult Research Roll and maybe some Networking too, to know about the ship's arrival

Thanks Quincey, definitely useful. I have a real hard time getting a feel for the mesh. Now, how about hacking a barge? Would security systems, ie doors, airlock, etc, typically be accessible via hacking to a passenger onboard? Or would you assume they're not wireless enabled?

I assume most failsafe systems will NOT be wirelessly accessible. So there will be a mechanical control to prevent the outer and inner airlock doors from being open simultaneously, and you can't wirelessly hack that. You will have some independent computer systems which cannot be hacked wirelessly, and are protected against physical access. Other systems will be protected by firewalls, or limited directionality (such as in only or out only) to prevent attacks. And some will rely solely on role-based access.

While important things will be made non-wireless, equipped with a suspicious AI lock and likely require physical access, there is likely a tendency on a barge to rely on the configuration that comes out of the box of the open source blueprint used. This can be both very safe or very unsafe, especially when printed by people who do not know how to do much more than ask their muse "Run through the print wizard for this chair". So they get a lot of extra mesh links with potential security holes. Have you patched your seat software to version 4.22y? It fixes that spime-loop that enables people to remotely use the sensors in the chair to spy on you. The standard SS8 screw is neat (it is auto-connecting to walls and equipment, often not requiring any drill or screwdriver) but it also tends to act as a mesh server with lousy firewall.

Interestingly enough, one of the first adventures I wrote was on a scum barge. I took the Mesh down in the ship and that was part of the adventure to repair and get it back up. There were 3 areas that needed repair or cabling replaced to regain access to the Mesh. They had to get past/deactivate a "crazed" repair droid, figure out how to replace a module in a depressurized area, and get past a extra-terrestrial flying lizard (that's a story unto itself right there). the adventure took 4 sessions of ~3.5hrs each.

On a barge or ship, there may be weak mesh access around the engines or other sources of radiation and intense power. On a barge with a very transient population, there will need to be dedicated local servers to store information and data so that the passenger's mesh implants aren't expected to upload/download/store huge quantities of data merely to provide steadiness in the availability of local mesh information. So the ship will have servers and mesh routers built into it. With SCUM barges or other gypsy/carnival/pirate type ships, I imagine they have a number of synthmorph tag-alongs such as novacrabs who live exclusively on the outside of the hull, like bed bugs hitching a ride with the fleet and paying their way by doing repairs and work in space. Quite an amazing view out there! When two ships come near each other, daring transhumans may jump from one to the other (or take a safer route like hitching a ride on the outside of a shuttle) and thus form a roving, word-of-mouth network between ships and habitats. These shell-dwellers or star junkies will require mesh routers on the outside of the ships' hulls, since the mesh can't penetrate ship armor and gets really weak around the engines and other high-intensity points of interference. Imagine hobos gathered around a burning trash barrel in an alley, exchanging stories and rumors. That's what it feels like to tag along with some novacrab repairmen/gypsies gathered around an external mesh router on the hull of a SCUM barge, watching the stars slowly wheel overhead as Saturn's rings or one of Jupiter's moons comes into view on the horizon.

I work on the assumption that with vast processing power, ready access to assorted superhuman/posthuman intelligences, and a solar-system-plus worth of data available, most fair-sized networks have some incredibly interesting things on them or associated with them. Security -- While most people in Eclipse Phase are not *elite* hackers, plenty of individuals are extremely familiar with the software and live lives intertwined with the inner workings of their local mesh. Sentient AIs, infomorphs, hackers, programmers, AI/infotech researchers, obsessed augmented-reality gamers, and to a degree everyone whose work is deeply connected to the mesh or at least infotech (arguably almost everybody). A barge that has managed to muddle through this long has probably survived at least some brushes with very, very serious threats. Remember, in objective time 95% of the transhuman race died off ten years ago and almost everybody left fled into space. Even the people who never saw or suspected TITAN technology are aware that hideously powerful weapons -- including infotech weapons -- were deployed in that war, so certain holes tend to be plugged. It's just that on a lot of the barges -- particularly the ones which evaded the worst incursions and infiltrators -- that security is often handled in unusual ways. Some barges probably rely on things like inhabiting colonies of AIs to defend them -- which range from friendly tagalongs and/or uplifted crew to... Advanced civilizations living in accelerated time who treat the barge as a home, a backup node or a useful drop point/sensor array to... Hostile or simply incredibly deadly infotech and nanite weapons hyperevolving using evolutionary algorithms, which treat the native crew and a few visitors as symbiotic organisms which are mainly off-limits (so long as they don't stray past certain limits) and subvert or annihilate everything else to... Just about anyone using the barge as a front, from red-tech marketeers/smugglers to Exhuman researchers/predators to seed AIs to AI colonies using legally questionable masses of computronium to Firewall operatives to everyone else's operatives to... A simple, outsourced set of complex defenses (remember, with the number of competent AIs, informorphs and limited AIs available, the level of basic to mid-level work required is no problem) sustained by way of any number of deals -- if you are a node in a major smuggling, encrypted communication or egocasting network you may have considerable resources, or you may simply trade rep, giving you firewalls that may be formidable and/or contain secret flaws enabling access either to your former contractors or those who know their secrets, or simply higher-order intruders such as any seed AI, to... A very low-infotech, high-biotech system, possibly assisted by the odd de facto psi, overrrun by the Exsurgent virus, which takes down anyone foolish enough to interface with its few computer systems directly. The inhabitants should theoretically fall at some point, but it the virus may be lurking, may have so few basilisk-hack and other options that it's stuck in a closed loop, or some other factor may be at work -- to... Perhaps the scariest option -- the barge has already fallen or is in the process of falling, and you are meddling in a place which is utterly owned or infected by a force you know nothing about, and which may be vastly more intelligent and dangerous than you are. Finally, one of the things I assume about Eclipse Phase is that many of the most powerful and advanced intelligences are keenly aware of what happens to the less powerful around them, even when they possess no real sense of compassion. Whenever an aggressive force acts, it exposes something about itself in doing so -- the technology it possesses, tactics it employs, goals it may or may not seek to further by way of a particular assault. Hence, advanced transhumans, Exhumans and seed AIs are often involved in a kind of cold war wherein they act subtly to assist otherwise outclassed victims -- a single "ping" alerting an invaded system of an ongoing attack, a sudden shutdown of a key communications hub in mid-incursion or basilisk hack, an involuntarily inserted or gift software patch that renders an obvious technique completely useless against the individual or organization. One factor often seen in these kinds of conflicts is an unspoken, ongoing assessment made by all of the relatively sane participants. Am I exposing too much of my resources, technology, tools and/or identity in this matter, and if so, is it worth it? Even a moderately powerful, newly emergent seed AI should probably have a few levels of increasingly potent resources, and virtually all of the notable ones have probably figured out some unique tricks, if only ones related to specific regions, individuals or organizations they have studied, or to their particular areas of specialization. Incidentally, I treat all seed AIs worth the name as having at least several psi chi sleights, if only as a consequence of their superior insights, technology and programming.
