Japan develops a healthy way to eat your own poop...

[url=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u1N6QfuIh0g]... By turning it into artificial meat![/url] Honestly, the truth of this is that human excrement is just leftovers from the digestive process. Bacteria feed on this, and they're what this artifical meat is mostly made from. It's likely healthier than regular meat because of how much protein it has compared to fat, it solves two environmental problems at once, can bring down the price of food (since the company/government program turning sewage mud into meat is simultaneously taking profit from two ends, pardon the pun), and is a very interesting concept. Doesn't change the fact that you're eating poop. Given that people in EP use nano-recyclers for their fabber bricks, though, I'm sure most people are not overwhelmed by this idea anymore.

I just wonder about the presence of pollutants. There is some concern in environmental circles about pharmaceuticals in sewage having effects on the ecosystem. Turning it into meat risks getting high concentrations of some of them, it seems. This kind of direct conversion seems like what might have been the emergency system for long space missions in the early days, before convenient hydroponics or nanotech. Probably something grandpa mentions to gross out the kids, before pointing out where the atoms in their printburgers come from...

I asked him about this particular story, and he informed me that this is a hoax from a few decades ago that someone decided to resurrect and run with. We then discussed the best ways to lace a salami with accelerants to optimize its use as a rocket propellant. There was less drinking involved than you would expect.

Perhaps a good example of how old memes never die, they just get recycled when it is a slow news week. I fully expect the BT Soulcatcher Chip to be news this summer again - as you all know, they have been working on uploading ever since Ian Pearson mentioned the possibility at the end of a presentation many years back. Possibility = fact.
