Forks and Merging
I have a player who's character has a, shall we say, fork fetish. He enjoys the idea of splitting up multiple times and whatnot, taking control of multiple bodies. I ran into a couple issues though I need some help with: 1. When a character's forks merge, what are the final stats of the merged ego? Is it the highest values of all the forks combined, an average, or what? The book never really says how to determine the attributes and skills post-merge. 2. With beta and delta forks, can they gain Rez points and improve their skills? Can they do so above the given maximum for their generation (in other words, can a beta fork raise his active skills above 60)?

Re: Forks and Merging
Gaining new skills requires significant expenditure of time - about a week for the first skill point and no more than 5 skill points per month for existing skills, per p. 153. Being forked for a week or longer imposes a -30 modifier on the merging test with "minor memory oss[sic]" and 5 Stress damage if you succeed on the test; failure causes severe memory loss and d10+6 Stress, which is a pretty-much guaranteed Trauma. (An argument could be made that skills can be learned in under a day using VR time compression, but I would counter by saying that fork time should be counted as the longest subjective time experienced by any involved fork.) So, from a strict mechanical standpoint, I'd call it a non-issue on the basis that someone trying to fork, buy up skills, and re-merge will be quickly driven insane by the stress of merging such different forks. From a gamemastering standpoint, I would say something like, "No, Rez points are not duplicated when you fork and you only gain Rez points per character, not per fork, so forks can't gain their own Rez points unless they first become NPCs. This is because getting more Rez points by forking would be abusive and break the game system." If they decide to do it anyhow, I'd go with the highest, on the basis that, just like the character only gains Rez once, he also only spends it once, so any spent Rez should benefit him long-term regardless of which fork makes the expenditure. This also means that, if three forks all study the same skill, improving it by 1 only costs 1 Rez point total, not 1 Rez per fork.

Re: Forks and Merging

Well, that doesn't really answer my question (my second one, at least). The big thing is whether a beta or delta fork can earn Rez on their own. Let me give you an example. My player's bodyguard is, in effect, a beta-fork that has been psychosurgically altered to have a different gender identity and other such modifications. He's wondering if his bodyguard can gain Rez points from missions and become more skilled or not. In that same vein, he has a delta fork which he uses for online searches and such, but this one is a real tricky one since delta forks are described as "more akin to AI templates upon which the ego’s surface personality traits are imprinted". AI cannot get Rez points.

I know he has no intent of taking advantage of this, as he has already psychosurgically altered one, and the other is effectively his mesh golden retriever. Any attempt to merge with them would be guaranteed to be detrimental (and seeing as he already has mental disorders, he doesn't need that in the least).

As for the first question, it was relevant because his character is a hyperlinguist. He made an alpha fork, and both of them (fork and original) split up for three days. Each were immersed in a different language long enough to start learning it (only takes a day). I already know that alpha forks get their own Rez (they are fully functional copies of the ego, and I consider forks to be separate characters), but I'm wondering whether he will know both languages when he merges.
