Allies vs custom Rep network
There seems to be some overlap between buying Allies, and coming up with a custom Reputation network. Allies costs 30 CP; for that cost, a character could also pick up a custom-Rep of 80 and Networking: custom-group of SAV+22, most likely around 35-40. (Though I am considering a classic-geek PC with Feeble in Savvy...) Are these essentially equivalent? That is, does the 30 points dropped on Allies give you pretty much the same thing that dropping the points on Rep and Networking would; or is one obviously a better choice than the other? Might there be some benefit in buying both, or do they overlap sufficiently to not really be worth the cost? (Part of why I ask is that with a limit of 50 CP in positive Traits, the 30 for Allies takes up an awful lot - while tossing 8 CP in a Rep network may not bump up against the limit of 35 so easily.)
Thank you for your time,

Re: Allies vs custom Rep network
Allies and Patron basically give you 1 auto success favor per session, as long as the other party can help you will get it. A custom network will get more times it can be used, but the uses will be lesser and you will have to make networking checks, and you are still limited to whether or not they can help you out. Plus with a custom network if you take an 80 rep level then the most you can get for your networking score (and only spend 30 CP) is a 62 (22 + 40 a 40 SAV after modifiers) so for that critical favor you will have a decent chance of failure.

Re: Allies vs custom Rep network
Under what circumstances is a custom Rep an option? What's it do? It seems silly to have a rep network that include 5, 12, or even 10000 people.

When the Gm decides to create a homebrew network. Though there are going to be allot of GMs who can be talked into it by their players. Though in all fairness a custom network akin to allies will just be an inferior version of an existing network, so you are probably better off getting rep and networking with an additional standard network, then creating a custom one. Allies and Patron's advantage is it does not require a networking check, and can potentially get better results then a Lv. 5 favor.
