What would you save?
So The Fall hits, but you manage to get yourself, your family, and your close friends onto a spaceship that will take you all to safety. You still can carry about 100 kilograms, so what (or who) else do you take? It might be kind of lame, but I'd try to save the whales. I'd fill that 100 kg with a variety of whale zygotes or genetic material, and I'd hope we could eventually recreate and adapt them to another environment. I mean whales are really big and cool -the blue whale is the largest vertebrate that's ever lived! Sperm whales can dive down 3 kilometers to hunt giant squid! Orca are brilliant pack hunters! With apologies to the world-renowned scientists and artists clamoring for a seat, I'd try to preserve these fantastic creatures.

You could just take a few hundred gene samples and store them digitally, to be honest. In fact, you could take tens of thousands of gene samples digitally and have them recreated in a lab, for what you'd get for a handful of physical samples. Me, I'm not sure what I'd take, but such things are most certainly worthwhile. As many gene samples as possible, I suppose, in digital form, so that life lost might be recreated elsewhere. As sad a reflection it might paint of my empathy for my fellow human beings, people I don't know seem like far less of a loss to me than the tortuously developed evolutionary history found in the diversity of life. After that would go the history of news, art, and human civilization; these would be things that should not be forgotten.

Psychedelic drugs. As much and as many as I could.

Besides the obvious family and friends, I would first take what ever information (in a digital format) I could with me, information is the most valuable thing you can posses in an uncertain future after the Fall. I would take anything that has value in itself (like my coin collection) because I will need something of worth to rebuild my life afterwards. And finally I would take my cat because after my family and friends, my cat is one of the most important things in my life (as any devoted pet owner would tell you).

Information is top priority. Already the stuff on the 1 Tb drive I have here contains a sizeable fraction of our civilization's greatest hits (Hmm, it almost seems like I have planned for this). Genomes is second. My beetle collection is pretty handy for this - so far none of the species have been sequenced. Seeds would also be very useful. Third, objects that have value due to their past. I think I can squeeze in a bunch of prints and oil paintings. But I'll throw them all out for a single genome.
