Neogenetic Uplifts
Hi all! A real quick intro, so you know where I'm coming from. I'm Enigma32. I'm a newcomer to Eclipse Phase, but I've had the setting for a while now and I've learned it by basically rewriting the whole rule book into notebooks (you have to have something to do when you're subbing inside of a math class and you're an English major...). If you're familiar with an old TSR system called Alternity, that's the first Sci-Fi game that I ever cut my teeth on. If there's any familiar faces from Anet on this forum, Ima give y'all a shout out - if there's not, feel free to look at me strange. Anyway, like I said; when you've got free time, your mind tends to wander. I recently came by Gatecrashing, and two aspects of it made my inner mad scientist cackle: Sky Ark and Fortean. Why? Custom morphs, that's why. So, I'll scavenge together my notes and I'll share what I've come up with.
    Uplifted Maniraptor
Biomorph Maniraptors include a wide array of critters that are currently dead and have been so for about 65 million years. Among their species they count some of the more intelligent dinosaurs - Troodons, Dromaeosauridae (Deinonychus, Velociraptor, and the like) and Oviraptors. I select this branch of the Theropod family because a) it's home to some of the smarter dinosaurs and b) if we can uplift avians, then we can uplift them. They're already neogenetically resurrecting them on Sky Ark, so it's not much of a stretch to think that someone, somewhere, got the idea humanity was feeling lonely and needed a scaly companion out of the late Cretaceous to keep us company in the cold and distant future. Now, note I'm not suggesting this is a smart idea, but if you ever wanted to reverse the roles of that famous scene from Jurassic Park when the Raptors are hunt the humans, now's your chance... While this includes a wide breadth of theropods, I imagine that this is generally going to be restricted to Troodons, Deinonychus, and Oviraptor. After all, they're the three smartest dinosaurs. All of the above are warmblooded, which means that resleeving in one won't be as psychologically devastating a preposition as it could be. They sport feathers - I imagine that if they're anything like birds today, males have bright, rainbow colored feathers while females have dull, brown and gray. That said, this isn't something some implants can't fix up. They've also been modified a bit; their hands feature something more akin to opposible thumbs, to allow them to grab and manipulate objects like humans can. [collapse] Implants: Basic Biomods, Basic Mesh Inserts, Cortical Stack Aptitude Maximum: 35 Durability: 30 Wound Threshold: 6 Advantages: Foot Claw (1d10+3 DV, AP -1), +10 COO, +5 REF, +10 Freerunning, +10 Perception; Can use Freerunning to scale vertical walls with an appropriate penalty Disadvantages: Social Stigma (Neogenetic) CP Cost: 30 Credit Cost: Expensive (50,000+, very rare) [/collapse]
    Minotaur
Pod Morph The geniuses on Fortean are creating something akin to a Walt Disney World for folks that grew up with D&D. If they're working on Sasquatch, it's only a matter of time before they focus on other mythological creatures, and then, perhaps, move beyond that into popular culture. Tops on that list should be the minotaur. We all know what a Minotaur is; large horns, nasty disposition, has a propensity to be housed in Labyrinths created by men named Daedelus. Unless you read Gunnerkrig Court, in which case we learn he's not such a bad guy and come out on the wrong end of history. Anyway, a minotaur morph is that brought to life. As you can imagine, this is a combat biomorph, or it's supposed to be - the exotic nature of the morph makes it exceedingly rare, and it's usually just for show and intimidation factor. Minotaurs themselves are, like most other creatures on Fortean, inhabited by AGI or AIs. Sleeving into one of these is like diving headfirst into a biological version of the Reaper synthmorph. [collapse] Implants: Basic Biomods, Basic Mesh Inserts, Cortical Stack, Cyberbrain, Direction Sense, Enhanced Vision, Hardened Skeleton, Hibernation, Medichines, Muscle Augmentation, Puppet Socket Ability Maximum: 40 Durability: 50 (55 w/Hardened Skeleton) Wound Threshhold: 10 Advantages: Horns (2d10+5+SOM/10), Claws (1d10+3+SOM/10), +10 SOM, +5 INT Disadvantages: Social Stigma (Neogenetic) CP Cost: 90 Credit Cost: Expensive (50,000+, vanishingly rare) [/collapse] I'll be back later with more, but in the mean time, I wouldn't mind some input :)

Re: Neogenetic Uplifts
Clever Girl... Might want to consider upping the movement rate on those little dinos to 4/20 or 4/24, those buggers could run fast couldn't they? It wouldn't change the CP cost (It only adds 0.8 to the CP cost if i remember my new numbers right). Other than that, awesome! When I first read that chapter my mind went crazy with ideas (Dragon Jousting!) but I haven't had the time to actually write anything up. Glad someone else is.

Question is, what kind of views toward Transhumans would these scaly buggers have? if they're hostile, we might find ourselves facing a second Fall. If they're isolated on their exoplanet, how long before they figure out how to use the Pandora Gates? I could see them sneak in SOL sleeved in biomorphs made to inspire us trust, confidence.. A nasty but seductive velociraptor female sleeved in a Sylph morph. "Hello, my name is Hanna. Let me eat... I mean heal you." *CRUNCH*

Re: Neogenetic Uplifts
Do bear in mind that our EP dinosaurs aren't properly such - they're basically other birds custom built to appear like dinosaurs. that means they should be somewhat similar to avian uplifts. It also means we may not have all the 'bugs' quite ironed out yet...

Dinos, birds, bugs...make up your mind, already! :P More seriously, if these are just buffed up birds, they might not have the killer instinct true raptor had. Still some might be very dangerous

Re: Neogenetic Uplifts
OK, first thought that occurred to me... how modified are the heads and their shape? Maniraptor heads (and particularly the brain-case) are not really the best shape to fit in an advanced, intellectually "capable" brain (long, low and thin). There is some debate as to how smart creatures such as the Troodontids might have been... smart as dinosaurs go, but still perhaps only as smart as an "average" modern bird (i.e. possibly not "crow-level"). If you remember the humanoid "Dinasauroid man" that was postulated about 30 years ago as a possible development based on Troodon, the head was heavily modified. OK, I think it is ludicrously too anthropomorphic... but you get an idea of the amount of brain-case development necessary. Might work better as a pod. Next thought, as has been mentioned, which bird would be used as a source? Makes a big difference to behaviour... Turkey or Golden Eagle?

Distributed AI in raptors pods... now that's dangerous biological weapon concept! imagine those freaks running free in a jungle around a research bunker lab. That would kick ass, from the GM perspective!

Re: Neogenetic Uplifts
Hmm.... you have a point. As far as intelligence goes, I'm aware of the debate over how intelligent they were. The average Troodon had the brain roughly the size of a pear last reading. I imagine that the snouts are probably a little shorter and the heads are a little rounder and wider. It still has a roughly dinosaur appearance, but it'd be obvious the creature is modified in some way. Now, if they were pods, headroom wouldn't matter. They'd be running on a cyberbrain, which can be made in any shape or size and doesn't even have to be stored inside of the head (the torso would be a much safer place). Well, Gatecrashing never lists the sources that they use for the dinosaurs. I imagine BOTH would be used somewhere - more intelligent individuals would be inclined towards turkey, while other, more daring individuals would certainly have no problem unleashing ones derived from golden eagle genetic material on the universe. Obviously the second breed would make for better villains than heroes - and more memorable ones, too, when Firewall is called in on a wild, exoplanet neogenetic raptor hunt.

Re: Neogenetic Uplifts
root@Neogenetic Uplifts [hr] Didn't dino's have distributed brains or something? I haven't looked at dinosaur stuff since I was a kid, and I'm pretty sure that a number of my favorite dinos are no longer considered to have actually existed, but I thought the big ones had signal repeaters in their butts so their when their tails were set on fire they might know about it before the next day.

Re: Neogenetic Uplifts
Hmm, not really "distributed brains"... the most modern version of this theory (and it is disputed) is that the hollow was occupied by tissues, dedicated nerves, and fat deposits (or possibly a glycogen body... but again this is disputed). Bear in mind that the nerve/tissue "space" is only present in a few of the bigger dinosaurs, primarily stegosaurus, brachiosaurus, and apatosaurus, and most dinosaurs didn’t have this lump of tissues. So, would there be any effect on intelligence? Not very likely, the dinosaurs would be still "thick".
